Pie in the Face

Ill make this short and sweet. This offseason were gonna be short on cash (thanks Milton!) So why not bring Felix back? He's a black guy (i think) and this could prove to all the naysayers that Cub fans aren't racist. Not to mention what he's been doing recently with the O's. I'm lazy today so here's a link from Rob Neyer's "What's To Be Done With Milton Bradley?" Fangraphs article So.... what do you guys think?

How do you plan to bring him back?

He belongs to the Orioles for the next few years so long as they decide to keep him around. Why do you think they’d want to give him back to us?

by SouthernCub on Sep 22, 2009 2:07 PM CDT reply actions

I think

if the Orioles felt they could get value for him, they’d ponder it. But what they perceive as value is unlikely to be what they can get, IMO. But with Reimold, Jones, Markakis, their OF looks set for the next 4-5 years, so yeah, if they felt like they could a decent return, I think they’d ponder it. I just don’t expect them to find a return that matches their expectations.

by toonsterwu on Sep 22, 2009 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

So

What would match their expectations?

According the Fangraphs Article

hes at best a backup outfielder, so maybe we could buy out his contract. it certainly wouldnt cost 30 million

um ...

I hope the Cubs make decisions based on what they think is best for the team .. and not to show that the fans aren’t racist. Along those lines, I don’t see how Felix Pie fits for this team barring several other moves. He’s shown he can survive in the bigs, but he’s not the guy to hit ahead of our middle of the order bats. Also, it’s SSS, and he’s also got some bad splits still. Pie makes little sense for the Cubs.

What in the Hell

Does the color of a player’s skin have anything to do with anything? Get over it already the Cubs have nothing to prove. A few bleacher fans are not the face of the fanbase nor the Cubs Organization.

I could care less what race, religion, heritage or anything else for that matter is as long as the player in question makes the Chicago Cubs better as a whole. Stop worrying about the stupid shit and worry about wanting players that make this team better.

I’m sick to death of the mention of Milton Bradley in every single post every single day. Right, wrong it doesn’t matter at this point. He will be removed from the team in the offseason and it will be over. Why don’t we all start now and turn the page. Bradley alone wasn’t gonna make this team a winner anyway.

I’m sick to death of this racist talk. I refuse to be labeled as a racist because I dislike Bradley or I’m a Cubs fan. Stop the nonsense already!

Well, this seems as good a place to put it

There aren’t many ideal options this offseason. There aren’t many great options. One option I might be curious to see what the cost would be might be dialing Oakland p to see what it would cost to land Ryan Sweeney. Sweeney’s a plus defensive OF and has improved offensively. He’s actually carrying an extremely healthy .322/.370/.469 line away from Home. He sees a healthy number of pitches (3.8 ish). Considering his youth, cost, and improvement, he’d probably be more costly than his talent would dictate, but it might be something to ponder this offseason, particularly since Oakland might be one of the few destinations that might ponder Milton Bradley (now, I’m not suggesting the A’s would do a Bradley + money/Sweeney swap … ).

Just a thought.

by toonsterwu on Sep 22, 2009 3:09 PM CDT reply actions

three issues with a Sweeney-for-Bradley trade

1. Even if the Cubs pick up a substantial portion of Bradley’s contract, Milton is still owed far more money than Sweeney…

2. …but Milton can’t play CF in Wrigley, much less in the Coliseum, ..and Bradley has a much lengthier injury history. Who plays CF for Oakland next year if they trade Sweeney?

3. The Oakland front office knows about Bradley’s injuries (not to mention his penchant for clubhouse drama) because he already played for them, albeit for far less money than he makes today. They ultimately traded him for a minor-league relief pitcher…so now they’ll trade their breakout-candidate centerfielder to get him back? Bradley’s OBP (drum kick for a stupid pot joke) isn’t that high.

I’d be ecstatic if the Cubs could trade Bradley for a young, talented CF but I can’t see any such “great options” here, just swaps for bad contracts. Vernon Wells and his deadweight contract have been mentioned many times, Magglio Ordonez’s option vested a few days ago…dreck like that. The best case scenario is that Hendry is able to get better value from equal cost, like the Hundley-for-Karros/Grudz swap.

The Cubs tried to get Rajai Davis when Reed Johnson went down.

I think Tyler Colvin may be in the mix for CF in 2010. Maybe Bradley could bring someone else. I doubt Billy Beane wants him back.

by Al Yellon on Sep 23, 2009 8:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Really only pondering options

As noted at the end, I don’t think a trade could/would happen.

I think, if Colvin is hot the rest of the way, despite SSS, the Cubs will probably roll the dice on Colvin, with Reed Johnson backing up. It’s not something I’d like to see.

As for a Milton Bradley trade, the one mock trade that still makes the most sense to me is Bradley for Luis Castillo, with the Cubs tossing in cash. Mets are rumored to want to make a change at 2nd. That said, I could easily see the Cubs simply eating the entire contract and waiving him, with rumors out already that the Cubs may have to eat 18 or 19 million to move him.

actually, there's been rumors/spec to the effect that

Oakland may ponder Bradley, but obviously, it would come with us footing the bill.

Keep in mind that

a) Beane has brought back/worked with players that he disagreed with (IIRC, he had a memorable disagreement with David Justice)

b) Bradley’s tenure in Oakland was actually quite peaceful. His blistering of Beane came after he left Oakland.
