Lamenting on 2009 as the snow falls in the high country
The season was a brutal effort to watch as this team, rarely played as one, even though its apparent talent and some individual performances were there, most were not really. I think I knew it when Reed Johnson stated the obvious projection in mid-July saying that now that they reached first place the players can begin playing as a team and not seeking individual results. That actually never materialized.
Now Aramus Ramirez has laid the mantle of responsibility on Hendry as he knows what is wrong and has the where-with-all to fix it. On the outside to me it is obvious, this team offensively and defensively was never balanced. The pitching was essentially there although the gamble on Gregg went sour in August, for the most part Cubs cut payroll and still added to their starting pitching staff. Wells is a good middle of the rotation keeper---an innings guy now 11-9 and could end up 12-9, isn't that what Marquis was for two years? Gorzalanny is another very good 5th starter and a lefty to boot. The problem is the Cubs truly don't have a real horse at the top of the rotation, 3 solid #2 level starters, no real stopper, although Zambrano seemingly has the potential or did have that potential.Does this mean allowing Harden go free agent, I think so.
Back to the position player squad. As Ramirez stated, Hendry knows it, so what is known. Up the middle we have a promising catcher who needs to work really hard over the off season and not smoke dope and come to ST like he did in 2008. Hill is a back up and a fair one. I think Al said it best last March that if Hill starts more than 32 games we are in trouble. Okay, we have a 2B/utility player starting at SS, marginal 2B/utility players starting at 2B and a RF'er starting at CF. Cubs need a real SS, and then if you want platoon 2B/utility players at 2B fine. Now if a Colvin-Johnson platoon in CF is the answer let us see.
The other big problem are the corner OF'ers, we have bipolar manic-depressive and/or schizophrenic in RF and a DH who can only hit fastballs in LF. Now my family has had its share of disorders and there is love, therapy and medicine for those in need but not a place in the batting order...say good-bye to the soap-opera drama although I doubt there will be any takers. Zoltan sees the biggest contract gulp and the best addition by subtraction.
As for LF, Cubs can't move to the AL and Soriano needs something more than his knee scoped. Do the Cubs do a Jason Giambi and basically have the most expensive part time player. All I know is that someone eyeballed his knee problem back in May, was that DML because I saw it too in July when I saw Soriano try to stop at 3B on a base hit where he had to take an extra base. He stepped so gingerly that I knew he was hurt.
The bench, well talk about unbalance, the Cubs have two first baseman who play the corner OF and possess some power, a utility IF'er who left his bat and glove in STL, and another utility IF'er who can't play SS. Cubs need much more speed, more real glove versatility and more leadership---sounds like DeRosa and Johnson
So let us see what Hendry does?

There was no need to characterize Bradley in the way you did.
Let it go. He won’t be back.

actually that characterzation possesses infinitely more empathy than merely character issues
I have not met or interfaced him personally or up close but the behavior is practically unmistakable, and there in lies the fact that this is not a slight on him, it is the judgment on those who chose to bring him here and think it would be a successful move.
As for he won’t be back, being that it is a valued $845B business he had better not be…I am not sure even the Mexican League would take a shot at him.

Regardless of whether you think the behavior is "practically unmistakable"...
… as you say, you haven’t met him personally, nor are you qualified to make a medical diagnosis on him.
Let’s stick to the facts as we have observed him. His behavior has been terrible, but that’s about all we can say.

I agree that we are not competent to make a medical diagnosis,
but he does make the impression of being a very troubled person. I would hope, for his sake, that he seeks professional help, or better yet, that our perception is false. Of course, if our impression is erroneous, then his behaviour has, at times, been inexcusable.

it goes deeper than that
The contracting of a valuable asset (.05%) annual cost there was still significant and at a liability: Sun Times
The contract pays $5 million in base salary in 2009 and $9 million in 2010 — with a $4 million signing bonus split over the two seasons — with $12 million due in 2011. But a multilayered set of clauses turns the final year into a team option (with a $2 million buyout) if Bradley’s health becomes a serious problem this season.
So $7M for 2009, $11M for 2010 and $12M in 2011 with a $2M buyout team option in 2011 if the mysterious clauses kick-in.
The question is what are the mysterious clauses, and IIRC games played had a trigger…..so suspended and injuries seemed be at the heart. To Date he had 124 Games Played and 393 AB’s, where are the lines for the buyout in 2011.

I also picke up on the Aramis quote.
I wonder if Jim Hendry said something to the club and what he said if he did.
I won’t be surprised if you have put your finger on the kinds of adjustments that are made.

good point DGU
Think there have been private conversations with a few players? Let us see what adjustments might be made.
1) Let us start with a genuine lead off hitter regardless where he plays.
2) Let us continue with a genuine glove at SS with range (Christmas present combo with #1)
3) A genuine CF’er, left handed hitting to boot.
4) Put some speed at 2B, (not Fox unless he can really glove the position)
5) Fukudome seems to have adjusted and I think next year improve his BA, 30+ doubles, 10+ HR’s, would be good back in RF regularly.
OKAY, got some more, maybe a true ACE, but that is dreaming.

Nice points...
…and I agree that Hendry probably had some frank discussions with players and probably told them he let them down. He has always been a players GM, he is well liked by them as he is the media.
Back to changes for 2010:
This will undoubtedlly be one of the most interesting offseasons in recent Cub’s history and I’m sure it will get a lot of attention. I would love to see the club get their first legit leadoff hitter since Lofton, upgrade SS, find a good left handed bat etc. etc., but you just don’t know how much dough Ricketts is willing to spend with interest payments on $500 mil in debt. Considering they will be spending money just to get rid of players, acquiring any established guys making good money could be a reach.
I’d imagine we’ll see what Ricketts has in mind shortly after he takes over.

Hey, what if the Cubs went back to one of the guys they should have signed in the first place?
Bobby Abreu will be a free agent again.

I'd be surprised if the Angels don't sign him
They really like him. They might offer him two years, since he’s been such a good influence on a lot of their younger players like Aybar, Izturis and Rivera.

Abreu's bat and glove aren't really better than Milton's.
They have less upside, a lot more downside, and are more LH.
But that package comes w/o personality issues, of course.

The Angels...
… gave Abreu credit for helping them become more patient at the plate this year.
The Angels have drawn 518 walks this year, currently ranking sixth in the AL (not including today, with 11 games remaining). Last year they drew 481 for the entire season, ranking 12th in the AL.

The differnce is entirely due to Abreu's walk totals over their DH last year
If he had an effect on his teams discipline, it’s not showing up in the stats.

Bobby Abreu is likely a worse hitter and defender than Bradley
He will also be expensive and is pretty old. If you are going to eat Bradley’s contract, then you won’t be able to afford a player like Abreu, nor should you try to sign him.

Give Credit to the Cardinals and Rockies
I believe the Cardinals have more won this division title than the Cubs have lost it. Considering all the garbage that has gone on with the Cubs, I’m surprised they have won as many games as they have. Meanwhile, the Cardinals look as if they will win about 95 games this season. The Rockies should win at least 91 games to get the wildcard. We’re not going to see any mediocre NL teams squeak into the playoffs this year.
Sure, I’m disappointed with the way the Cubs have played this season. The injuries have piled up. The Cubs paid Park Place and Boardwalk prices for a certain player that now doesn’t even have Mediterranean and Baltic Avenue value. Soto is doing a Rick Wilkins sophomore imitation in his second full season in the majors. I will give credit to the Cardinals and Rockies for having very good seasons.

The Cubs won the 2007 central with 85 wins. They might get that many this year, but the competition has been better.

The Cards’ staters have been astoundingly good this year and the Rocks’ young talent has taken steps forward.

It makes little sense to bring back a guy who is a part time player and couldn’t remain healthy enough to even play part time. Time to let him go.

Can of worms time.
We need a bonafide leadoff man and a second baseman. Brian Roberts, anyone? He’s a free agent. His stolen bases and OBP are down slightly, but only slightly. He still is going to finish the year with over 30 stolen bases, and an OBP of over .350, and will only be 32 when this season ends. We could certainly do a lot worse than Roberts leading off and Fukudome batting second. Then you have Lee third, Aramis fourth, (insert name here) fifth, Soriano sixth, Soto seventh, Theriot eighth. And hey, if Roberts is going to be our free agent fish and we keep Fukudome in center, then we have Hoffpauir, Jake Fox, and Tyler Colvin who are all potential in-house candidates. Fox has not played a lot of right field, but for a guy without a position and a good attitude, he would be willing to learn.

starting pitching was pretty good this year. the bullpen has some potential. the hitting was terrible with most players suffering really bad seasons. we havr in house possibilities. do the cubs have any faith in fox to plug him into rightfield. theres your possible big rbi guy right there. akinori from the rays would be a nice addition. we just have to wait now and see what the new owners are willing to spend.
