Lou Piniella has told others that one way or the other, 2010 will be his last season managing.

I really don't like this

I don’t believe Lou should be let go after this season. I think that’s a knee-jerk reaction to a season full of injuries and bad breaks.

But I really hate guys with short-timers’ disease. I hope he proves me wrong, but I tend to agree with what John Madden said about retiring football players.

When you make the decision to retire, you’re already gone.

I don't get that impression

I think Lou is competitive enough that he’s going to want to go out with a bang.

No, he's cool

Maybe Piniella was doing too much fiddling on the roof this year. :)

I was replying to Worf’s point and didn’t do it correctly.

Figured.

But once the silliness starts, it doesn’t want to stop.

You could be right about Lou's competitiveness

But if we have another year where we’re 7 out in August…

We thought he was disengaged THIS year at times. Next year would be worse.

That would make sense

if playing football and managing a baseball team were comparable.

As much as I'd like Lou gone...

…knowing it’s only going to be another year is good enough. I’m not convinced the Cubs can win a pennant under Lou’s leadership, but that’s not going to be for much longer. Cutting ties with him after this season would be better since he’s looked detached and mentioned retirement already.

And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.

Maybe this is parsing words...

… but hearing at least part of the Piniella soundbite and he did not say he was done after 2010. He said something to the effect of “I can’t see myself managing beyond 2010”. Now I’d say that its very likely that he’ll be done after next year as that seems like its been the plan for quite some time, however there is a difference between “I’m not coming back” and “I can’t see myself coming back”. One indicates that a decision has been made while the other points to Piniella’s overall state of mind and where he is right now. Its been a long and disappointing season so you have to consider that. Further one could see a situation next year where a.) the Cubs have a great season where Piniella really enjoys himself or b.) the Cubs have a poor season and Piniella doesn’t want to end on a sour note.

Anyhow… just saying. I didn’t expect him as the manager in 2011 but I saw this more of Lou letting people know where his state of mind is and not so much an announcement of a tentative decision.

My feeling all along this year....

knowing that he has one more year left on his contract, was that if the Cubs do not improve in 2010, that will probably be it. I doubt he would even seek an extension. If they can recapture some of the regular season magic in 2010, then make some noise in the playoffs only to get close and then fall short, he may try to give it one more shot if he feels like the team can be kept together in 2011. Missing the playoffs entirely, or winning the World Series (or probably even winning the pennant and losing the WS) in 2010, he’d probably retire on that note. I’d say the only thing that would get him back in 2011 would be if the Cubs got close to the WS, but did not make it next year. Don’t forget, I think he turned 66 this year. I think we all hope to be retired by that age.

I'm not really sure how I feel about Lou.

As far as Cubs history goes, he has been one of the most successful managers we’ve ever had for the amount of time he’s been here. In three short years he’s going to rack up 267 wins (or so) and 2 division titles.

Can you believe that someone averaging 89 wins is no longer par for the course?! This is a good thing though, the days of being the lovable losers are gone. Mediocrity is no longer the standard we strive for.

Some will argue that’s easy when you have the third highest payroll in the majors. I for one have a lot of questions regarding his managing in ’09.

I’m willing to give him one more year though, but after that I think it might be time to try someone else. God willing I’m wrong and eating a big plate of crow in 14 months!

Lou’s handling of alot of things pains me to no end at times but again I will say 1 person/player wasn’t winning us a championship this year.

I would sleep with Blou if it meant the Cubs would win a WS. by Doggie Stalker on Aug 22, 2009 4:11 PM EDT
