Remember when you watched a movie this great

On a screen at least 30 feet high with hundreds of other people so you could really appreciate it.

I get the big screen part but why do the hundreds of other people matter?

chances are, they’d be more of a distraction, especially in this day and age.

No when an audience gets "into" a film

as they usually do with OZ it is magical. Films were made to be seen with other people. I literally still do not own a DVD player ( I can play them on my computer for work). I find it essential to see films with an audience. There are some really bad ones but frankly I am not usually at the kinds of films that attract the annoying crowd.

Says the entire history of film

You think the creative team behind OZ made it with an eye towards some geek watching it on an iPod in between cell calls or even in his /her personal screening room with 10 foot screen in the basement ? As soon as the first Nickelodeon
was opened ( often in the back of some old bldg) film was a group experience. It is something that has been diminishing and along with it the appreciation of the artistry filmmakers put into their work. I can’t imagine appreciating a Preston Sturges film if you are the only one watching Mary Astor say “NITZ TOTO NITZ” or feeling the tension of James Cagney walking to electric chair in ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES by yourself. Try going to one of those giant outdoor screenings
and tell me it is not more fun than sitting home and watching the same film or that you really get the same feeling.

I agree with you doggie

I went and saw “Some Like it Hot” at the Hollywood cemetery this summer on a big screen with about 200-300 other folks. The atmosphere made the film much more enjoyable than when I watched it on cable.

What you describe may be...

…but I also tire of the film snobs that think they understand the story better than the ones who put it together. And these “experts” aren’t shy about sharing their interpretation with those around them – yes, sometimes even while the film is still showing.

I’m all for IMAX and any other advanced technology that allows us to see films from all eras in the best possible light (pun intended). But the interpretation and enjoyment of a film is a very personal experience for me – having others telling me what the director was really trying to say doesn’t sit very well with me.

Where are you seeing these films

A bad night at FACETS ? I hate ANYONE who talks during a film no matter what they are saying. I don’t run into
it very much especially at classics. I mean if you go see something campy like GLEN OR GLENDA , then people do sort
of do their best Mystery Science theater bits but I find audiences pretty good. When I am back in town I should drag you to one of those classic shows at the Music Box.

I know what you mean.

I’m kind of in both camps, as I see it as absolutely essential for me to have a high quality display tuned to be ISF accurate, and a calibrated surround system so I can enjoy great movies whenever I want to, not just when they’re playing somewhere. But you do lose the communal element of the movie-going experience at home, that is true.

I had never seen “Casablanca” with an audience of any size until recently. I was in LA on business and was able to catch up with a couple of old friends in Hollywood one night. On a whim, we went to get a few drinks at the poolside lounge of the Beverly Hilton, and they were playing that film up on the wall. The atmosphere and history of that place, combined with Bogart on the big screen…well, I’ll never forget that. It really enhanced my appreciation of that movie.

Well not exactly the theatrical experience I prefer

but with an audience is always better.

You all have to watch the video...

BTW, SWL has way too much time on his hands.

My dad is creating a watch for the anniversary

He got the rights to Oz a couple years ago so this watch is a big deal.

Well last night he went to the Warner Bros. special anniversary dinner. The entire living cast was there and it was apparently an amazing night.

Just thought I’d share.

Personally, I know I’m in the minority but I never liked the movie!
