Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

What do YOU do to get through the off-season?

Sadly, the official end of the Cubs onion-skin thin playoff hopes evaporated last night with Colorado's 11 inning vicotry over the Brewers. (Thanks "Suds Buds"!)

So now, we can begin to turn our attention to the off season. I imagine many of us BCBers have some sort of off-season routine or coping mechanism to get through the long winter until Spring Training opens in February.

Some may enjoy the playoffs and pick other teams to root for. As a Tigers fan too, I'm holding out hope they can hold off the Twins and win the ALCD title. As for the playoffs, who knows how far they may go?

Maybe you follow the Arizonia Fall League, or Winter Ball "south of the border". Or you may just completely unplug from baseball and enjoy other winter sports like football, basketball, hockey and such. Some of you may forgo sports entirely in the off-season.

For me, I start an off-season beard that I shave off on the first day of Spring Training. Silly, I know, but it's my coping mechanism. And it's cheap.

So, it begs the question: "What do YOU do to get through the off-season?"

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

This year...

…. for those of us who have the MLB Network, we’ll have baseball on TV fairly often during the offseason, as MLB Network will be covering various winter league games. That’s a first, and it’ll give us a baseball fix when we need it most.

Otherwise, we start the countdown to 2010 Opening Day!

It’s still worth it to me, because as a downstater, I get both WGN Chicago and Comcast Sports Net in the basic package, meaning I get all but a few Cub games for no extra fee. But MLB and DirecTV made the MLB Network an exclusive to DirecTV.

bears primarily, but a general football fan … I also believe that if the OL shores up a bit to give the run game some punch, the Bears have a legitimate shot to get to the SB this year now that they have a top level QB … granted, any more LB’s go down and there may be problems … but Rod M has the DL looking better, and the secondary, while it could still use a better FS, has been fine/solid.

I might give college basketball a try.

My husband is a big DePaul fan. He and most of his family went there. He taught some classes and mentors there as well. I used to root for DePaul if he had a game on, but didn’t really care or follow it. Let’s just say I wasn’t even sure most of the time which basket they were supposed to be shooting at. My daughter however just went to Marquette. I’m considering learning basketball now just to start a friendly rivalry with him. I figure since we are paying for Marquette, we should root for them. He’s being stubborn though. I can’t even convince him that it would be OK to root for Marquette as long as they aren’t playing against DePaul. I do think that he will root for Marquette against Notre Dame though. My son agrees with him, so we will have a boys against the girls thing going on. It could be fun.

If this is your first offseason on BCB

Just be prepared that it can get VERY testy at times. People come out of the woodwork with crazy trade ideas, people don’t visit the site for weeks then post multiple fanposts discussing things that have been discussed in the interim, people are grumpy because they see other teams doing well in the postseason, and then there’s NO NEWS for weeks leading up to Spring Training.

At least we have the probably succession of the Ricketts ownership as an additional diversion this year.

Okay, it’s not the NHL. It’s not even the AHL. The Mississippi Riverkings of the Central Hockey League provide an entertaining product to someone who didn’t see a hockey game in person until 1998. Seven-eight months of baseball can be a grind. Although I’ll check in here from time to time and keep tabs on the hot-stove league.

Otherwise, it’s Blackhawks and college and high school basketball.

From Jan. 1 until April 1 is a lot of fun sports-wise: College football bowl games, college basketball begins to heat up with conference games, high school basketball state tournaments, the NCAA tournament, spring training and Opening Day.

Other sports for me. Bears, Hawks games are a ton of fun to go to, going to the opener in a week and half. College bball, although it is getting harder to follow because you have to learn new rosters every year, a few NBA games.

Besides that, check into BCB a few times a week to read about Brian Roberts.

Trying to get excited to watch playoff baseball, it’s always nice to watch baseball when the air is crisp. Although it has been tough to get excited for with the Cubs troubles, also the pennants races have really been anit-climatic.

No way

that’s like saying you’d rather “get it over with in 9 innings” than be out there and try to win it in extra innings.

What kind of prize does this type of victory merit?

Out of respect for Al, I’m only posting a link instead of a picture, but here’s my suggestion…

The ‘t’ just LOOKS like an ‘f’ . . . .

this is either a really bad attempt at humor or

the poster is an idiot

I always turn to the sports section first. The sports page records people's accomplishments; the front page has nothing but man's failures.

This blog helps a lot in the offseason.

I always set dates to focus on getting past, as time markers for getting through the postseason. October you at least have playoff baseball to watch. I always set my first time marker as the Winter Meetings, in early December. And leading up to that, you have the Free Agent signing period to keep you somewhat occupied. After the Winter Meetings, my next time marker is the Cubs Convention in January. Then you have the Super Bowl in early February, and after that, you know you’re a week or two from pitchers and catchers reporting to Arizona.

I follow the Bears very closely, of course, and I’m more of a casual observer when it comes to the Bulls, and the same thing for college football and college basketball. The difference in football and basketball, though, is those are sports I follow when they are in season. Baseball, for me, is 24-7-365. A day never goes by, ever, where I don’t think about the Cubs. I can’t say the same for any other sport or team, even the Bears.
