Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

An official press conference is expected later today. Wedge and his coaches will guide the team for the remainder of the season.

It seems odd to me to fire a manager yet have him stick around and manage for a few more games. Either let someone else manage for the remainder of the season or wait on the announcement for a week. With firings already in Houston and Cleveland, along with Jim Riggleman managing on an interim basis in Washington D.C., this could be a heavy off season for managerial moves.

not too surprising

sort of shapiro’s last stand … b/c his head is next. after looking like things were headed in the right direction, it’s slipped the last couple of years.

They do have an excellent system and a nice young nucleus, so next GM is going in a good situation.

All I can think of

is that many managerial candidates will not interview until the previous guy has been fired. That way, in this small club, he can say “I wasn’t after your job.”

Maybe Shapiro has a candidate on the line, and hopes to be able to announce his hiring very soon after the season ends, even before the playoffs start.

I wouldn't be surprised

if they tried to work out an agreement for Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell, although due to his clause with the Red Sox, there might be compensation required (Farrell being the former Indians farm director). Based on what we know of Francona, I’d be highly surprised if he stringently blocked Farrell’s attempts to leave, even with the clause, assuming Farrell was offered and wanted the job.

I could also see them go the way of Josh Byrnes and hire a surprise candidate.

Yabbut....

… why not just let him manage the last five games, then fire him on Monday? You could still make that announcement before the playoffs start.

I wonder if Tram will be interviewing for any of the open jobs.

Seems like he’s an outside shot at best to follow Lou in 2011. Too bad. I’d LOVE for Tram and Ryno to take over the team then. You wouldn’t see anyone loafing, or not running out grounders- thats for sure. Old school!
