Iowa Cubs (71-69)

The Omaha Royals scored 4 runs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the I-Cubs, 8-7, at Rosenblatt Stadium.

Casey Fossum pitched 5 innings giving 4 runs (all earned) on 6 hits.  He had 5 K's and walked 3.  James Russell and Jeff Stevens combined for 3 scoreless innings of relief.  Blake Parker faced 5 batters and got the loss.  He got only one out, while allowing 3 walks and 1 hit.  John Gaub relieved Parker.  Gaub walked the first batter he faced before allowing the game-winning double to the very next batter, Omaha's Mario Lisson.

DH Matt Craig was 3 for 5 with a double.  2B Luis Rivas had a double as part of his 2 for 3 night.  Bobby Scales went 3 for 4 with a double.

The I-Cubs weren't the only team in the PCL to blow a late lead Thursday.  The Nashville Sounds beat the Memphis Redbirds, 7-6, at Greer Stadium.  The Sounds scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 7th to overcome a 6-1 deficit.

The I-Cubs are now 2.5 games behind first -place Memphis and 2 games behind second-place Nashville in the PCL American North race.

 

Tennessee Smokies (35-31)

The Smokies dropped a critical 8-3 decision to the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx at Pringles Park.

The Smokies' Christopher Carpenter was the loser pitching 4.2 innings allowing 6 runs (4 earned) on 6 hits.  He struck out 5 and walked 3.  The Smokies committed 2 errors in West Tenn's 6-run 5th inning.

DH Blake Lalli went 2 for 4.  3B Marquez Smith collected 2 hits in 4 AB including a solo homer.  1B Russ Canzler was 1 for 3 with a solo home run.

The Smokies are now tied with the Diamond Jaxx for first place in the SL North 2nd Half race.  Both teams are 1 game ahead of the Chattanooga Lookouts, who lost to the Birmingham Barons, 9-5, Thursday, at AT&T Field.

 

Daytona Cubs (28-37)

The Lakeland Flying Tigers walked off with a 4-3 win in game 1 of a doubleheader with the Daytona Cubs Thursday.

James Leverton started and went five innings. He gave up four hits, three runs (only one earned), struck out 6, and walked 2. The loser was Billy Muldowney. He pitched 1.2 innings striking out one, walking none, giving up 3 hits and the game-winning run in the bottom of the 7th.  Three D-Cubs errors led to 2 Lakeland runs in the bottom of the 3rd.

None of the six D-Cubs’ hits were for extra bases. 3B Josh Vitters went 2 for 4.

The D-Cubs rebounded to win the nightcap, 10-7, against Lakeland.

Starter Ryan Searle got pounded for 6 runs on 6 hits in only 2.2 innings of work.  Chris Siegfried got the win in relief.  He pitched a perfect 1.1 innings striking out 3 of the 4 batters he faced.  Luke Sommer retired the only batter he faced in the 7th to pick up the save.  (7 innings is the regulation length of doubleheader games in the minors)

CF Tony Campana had a 4 for 5 nightcap.  3B Josh Vitters was 3 for 4 with a double and walk.  CF Kevin Soto went 2 for 4.  C Luis Flores had a double as part of his 2 for 4 performance.

 

Peoria Chiefs (41-24)

The Chiefs lost to the Kane County Cougars, 8-4, at O'Brien Field.

Justin Bristow was the loser going 4.2 innings giving up 4 runs on 7 hits.  He struck out 4 and issued 3 bases on balls. Jeffrey Beliveau threw 2.1 innings and also gave up 4 runs.  He allowed 2 runs and 2 walks, while having 2 K's.  Erik Hamren was the bright spot pitching 2.1 scoreless innings giving up 2 hits.  He also struck out 1 and walked 2.

1B Rebel Ridling went 2 for 4 with a solo shot.  2B DJ LeMahieu also went 2 for 4.

 

Boise Hawks (33-40)

The Boise Hawks beat the Spokane Indians, 5-4, at Memorial Stadium, in Idaho.

The starter, Robert Hernandez, was the winner giving up 2 runs on 4 hits in 5 innings.  He had 4 K's and 3 BB's. Eduardo Figueroa pitched 2.1 innings allowing 2 runs (none earned) on 2 hits.  He walked out one and struck out one.  Steven Grife picked up the save throwing a scoreless 1.2 innings giving up 2 hits.

SS Hak-Ju Lee was 2 for 4 with a double.  3B Robert Wagner (not the actor)  went 2 for 4 with a triple and 2-run jack.

Thanks for stepping in!

BTW, I might be the only person on this site other than yourself who remembers the Chicks. I went to a TON of games at Tim McCarver stadium growing up. I even got to see Michael Jordan play there lol! Memphis is doing better having the Redbirds there, but the Chicks will always have a special place in my heart!

Memphis Chicks

It seemed like interest really waned in the Chicks after Memphis State got good again in basketball with Keith Lee. The Chicks had some big years being affiliated with the Expos in the early 1980’s. I still like following the “old” Memphis Chicks franchise, the Diamond Jaxx, up in Jackson.
