1987 Jamie Moyer Game
When Harry Caray was away from the broadcasting booth in 1987 because of a stroke, Ernie Harwell announced a game between the Cubs and Phillies on WGN. Jamie Moyer took a no-hitter into the ninth inning before it got broken up.
I looked it up and it was on April 13, 1987. Juan Samuel broke up the no-no. Lee Smith came in to get the save with the Cubs winning 5-2.
That is the only complete game I have ever heard Harwell announce. I love his voice. Even with all those years in Detroit, Harwell has never lost that southern accent.

You missed something special by not being able to hear more of him. There are recordings available.

Never met him like you did, but...
… couldn’t have said it better.

True baseball Legend
No one should have to go through what he is now.

A legendary voice
He touched a lot of us. Through a shared passion for the game, or through a more common thread. I used to listen to him here in Iowa. One of those odd things about AM radio that sometimes I could get Tigers games at night crystal clear. From the report I heard on the radio he’s decided how he wants to exit the world, and he’s not looking back in regret. A rich, full life.
I met Ernie Harwell a few years ago
through a friend who works for the White Sox. He gave me a copy of his book, which he also autographed for me.
He seemed a very genuine guy, and I will be praying for God’s mercy on him and his family.

Ernie is the spokesperson for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan and often did public promotion appearances for them.
I had the opportunity to meet him at one of these functions and spend a little time talking with him. He’s an amazing person and a fountain of baseball knowledge.
A few years ago, Ernie released a CD package of some of his most interesting stories of his years in baseball. Well worth it if you can find it to listen to a broadcasting legend.
In his own words.
God Bless you Ernie and our prayers are with you and Lulu…
