Nice!
I’m digging the Billy Bragg and Jam stuff!
Some other possibilites -
Love of the Common People – Waylon Jennings
Want Ads – Honey Cone (not exactly a workin’ tune, but we need some dance numbers, no?)
One Piece At A Time – Johnny Cash
The Factory – Warren Zevon

Thanks!
And I do love the Billy Bragg and Jam tunes. I had the good fortune to see The Jam at the Aragon Ballroom on their last tour (1982?). Great show but my ears are still ringing!
Great suggestions too! I really missed one with Warren Zevon’s “The Factory.” With that suggestion it reminded me of Elvis Costello’s song, “Hoover Factory.” I remember hearing John Mahoney say that Costello’s, “Hoover Factory” was one of his favorite song. What a pick.

Hoover Factory!
+100 on that – it’s a brilliant piece, and really unique.
And that ‘82 tour was also the one time I got to see The Jam, at the Orpheum in Boston. A gooood evening, definitely, though I do wish I could’ve seen ’em back in the day.
Thanks again for a nice Labor Day diversion!

Early on...
… The Jam played some odd places. They played in East Chicago on an early tour. You know all those young punks in NW Indiana & Chicago’s SW Side back in the late ’70’s.

Eye strain...
… I didn’t realize that the list went from one column to a huge paragraph. Just looking at that gave me eye strain and a headache. I think I’ve fixed it.
Huey Lewis & The News, “Working For a Living” is on the list. But perhaps that other song should be added.

And, oh yeah....
….Piss Factory by Patti Smith! A must on any labor list.

Inspiring!
You’ve inspired me to seek out Patti’s work. I had a cassette tape of “Horses” ages ago that I used to love to listen to.

Do it -
If you like the stuff on your list (which I assume you do!) you’ll enjoy Patti’s stuff. Piss Factory is her first-ever single, pre-Horses; it’s raw, really more like a poem with accompaniment (including piano by David Sancious, who played in Springsteen’s band on his first couple of records). Not her most accessible work, but it has something going on.
Speaking of her, the reason I know the Waylon song (Love of the Common People) is from hearing her cover it at a show.
The Land collection is a pretty great introduction to her oeuvre – enjoy!

Asbury Park connection?
I wonder if they got to know each other on the Jersey shore, Asbury Park? I was out at Asbury Park earlier this year and thought of The Boss and Pattie Smith and the like.
I’ve put a hold on PS, The Land at my local library. Thanks for the lead!

If memory serves...
…Sancious was more of a New York guy, which is where Patti was (living with Robert Mapplethorpe and all). He was always kind of an odd match with Springsteen, but he really brought a nice thoughtful angle to the band.

Another entry missed:
“Let’s Work” by Prince. One of the baddest funk basslines ever.
"Was you ever punched in the face five hundred times a night? It stings after a while." ~Rocky Balboa
with THE baddest funk bassline of all time curiously absent from this list

No Utah Phillips?
Faith Petric ? A nod to Joe Hill ?

Case studies quote patients reporting a sensation of "giving way," a "bursting noise" or "sudden explosion."
Get A Haircut (And Get A Real Job)
George Thorogood and the Destroyers
"The big possums walk late." - Harry Caray
Ok, this is lame compared to the great songs you picked, but
it the first thing that came to my mind along with “Whistle While you Work.”

"Fasten your seatbelts"-Pat Hughes

Well....
“Leaf Blower” by Beck might be a step in the right direction, but it’s still not in the current decade.
Now get off my lawn!
