I would like jose, dan, and anyone else we can to get this team back on the winning track.

Supposedly Uggla and Hanley Ramirez got into a shoving/shouting match in the dugout last week.

Whether it was serious enough to cause deep rifts in clubhouse chemistry remains to be seen. Apparently both parties kissed and made up afterwards and said all the right things.

If we want Uggla, we ought to try and do the deal quick, because it’s only a matter of time before Boston reloads and tries for Ramirez again. And seeing as how they didn’t land Halladay, they’ve still have some ammo.

by ballhawk on Sep 8, 2009 10:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Seriously?

Uggla was a major non-tender candidate to begin with. Now he’s in a rift with the franchise face, to boot?

Florida is not paying this guy $6 million-plus next season. If you want him, wait till after the deadline, when you can at least negotiate a better deal with him as a free agent.

As for Valverde, pass. Not that I don’t like him, but the Cubs look inclined to let Carlos Marmol take that job. Better to go shopping for a lock-down, eighth-inning man.

Any idea on who’s available for the eighth-inning role?

by chilango2 on Sep 8, 2009 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

JJ Putz?

Healthy he can dominate.

Other than that, personally I don’t mind seeing Angel Guzman succeed there. It would be great to say the 8th and 9th inning guys were homegrown.

I’m saving all my venom, diatribes, and who stays/who goes banter till after the season.

by Damen Jackson on Sep 8, 2009 3:36 PM CDT up reply actions

I anticipate Boston

to try and go after Felix Hernandez again. Failing that, the door’s wide open on where they go, with Hanley definitely an option, along with Doc Halladay perhaps.

by toonsterwu on Sep 8, 2009 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

really?

is this speculation on your part or have you heard those rumors about King Felix to BOS? I had not heard anything remotely close to that. That would be quite the coup for Theo.

by socalbob on Sep 8, 2009 3:57 PM CDT up reply actions

It was mentioned post trade deadline

That Theo made an aggressive package to gun after Felix Hernandez (along with Doc Halladay).

Ugh, my computer’s a mess so posting the link straight.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/marinersblog/2009591133_mariners_turned_down_three-way.html

Now, Boston held off on some of their top chips, but that was an aggressive start to test the waters. Seattle will try to extend Felix this offseason, but I think Theo will try to tap that door again. There’s been spec that they’ll do some reshuffling this offseason.

by toonsterwu on Sep 9, 2009 12:14 AM CDT up reply actions

great stuff

Thanks. I got a chuckle when I saw “3 Team” and “Padres” in hte same sentence.

I would have takent he top 5 off of Boston’s list and sent King packing. I can’t believe Epstein offered all those guys. Amazing that Zdurnieck said no.

by socalbob on Sep 9, 2009 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions

no jose. never liked him. has good stuff, just don’t like him.

It's not about money. It's about winning and getting over the hump. We've had the appetizer now, but we left the main course on the table.

Hehe

Not to rip on your comment, but I’ve always thought the ol’ “I just don’t like the guy” argument is ridiculous. Its not like your having him over for dinner with your family. I’m thinking most of the famous sports figures in the world would be guys we really don’t like. For one they would probably treat people like us, like crap. Put the guy in a Cubs jersey and he’s alright in my book.

Thoughts

Cost would be an issue to ponder. It seems quite likely that we’ll have limited flexibility this offseason, and both guys could cost quite a bit. I’m open to Valverde, if we have the budget flexibility to add Valverde and accomplish other goals, but if not, I don’t know how comfortable I would feel in either overextending for him and/or hampering our ability to make other moves.

Furthermore, I’d rather let Baker have 2nd than turn to Uggla (and have to trade assets and spend money). Baker’s put up a .331/.388/.508 line since joining us. I’m open to finding another MI next year, but only if it changes the complexion of the team (namely, provides a top of the order bat). If it’s between slugging 2nd basemen, I’m more than fine with Baker.

by toonsterwu on Sep 7, 2009 11:47 PM CDT reply actions

...uh, maybe?

On Valverde. He gets out of line, and we can let Milton take out some of his pent up aggression on ’im.

Rickey has spoken. Keep the Athletics in Bump City.

by LeSaboteur on Sep 8, 2009 1:35 AM CDT reply actions

He'd probably be the guy that I hate most on other teams...

…but, in all honesty, if he was on our team I’d love him.

Dan Uggla? No thank you.

Jeff Baker deserves to be the starting 2B next season with his play since becoming a Cub. We need to give him a chance.

And… a longshot, I hope DeRosa somehow finds his way back in a Cubs uniform.

Valverde?

Well, he’s good. But Carlos Marmol could be just as good. We have to stop thinking that “throw money at free agents” is the only way to build a winning team.

by Al Yellon on Sep 8, 2009 7:45 AM CDT reply actions

Marmol's delivery was different last season

he added the toe tapping, to be more like Mariano Rivera, and I wonder if that has had any effect on him this season

by Cubbie-Tim on Sep 8, 2009 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions

But he's succeeding in the closing role thus far

I know it’s going to be a small sample size but if Marmol continues to excel in the 9th I think Cubs should go with him for 2010. None of this “Lou trying out the job for potential closers”.

Cubs should resign Grabow, and have Marshall, Guzman and company in the pen.

One name maybe they can sign for a low risk is JJ Putz? When healthy he’ll be great with the Cubs.

As for starting pitching, if they don’t resign Harden, one guy I’d be interested in seeing on the Cubs is Joel Piniero. He’s been very good for the Cardinals this year.

by ak123 on Sep 8, 2009 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree he has done well so far

but he still scares me more than Mitch Williams in the 9th

by Cubbie-Tim on Sep 8, 2009 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

It's funny

I’ve been more relaxed watching him in the 9th than the 8th. It might because I know the seasons pretty much over but it’s a different feeling.

by ak123 on Sep 8, 2009 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Putz

hasn’t been healthy for 2 years now. What makes you think he’ll be healthy again?

by socalbob on Sep 8, 2009 3:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought about this too

But Marmol seems to be settling in as a closer. Marmol also is practically free compared to any free agent. I can see Cubs getting some bullpen help next year on the free agent market but not to close.

by ak123 on Sep 8, 2009 8:23 AM CDT reply actions

No No and No

Please Hendry don’t even let the thought cross your mind. His antics on the mound are worse than Gregg’s glasses, Big Z’s pouting, an Papelbon’s hour between each pitch. This guy and his rituals need to go to the AL somewhere.

I would say yes

Valverde might rub us all the wrong way, but he gets the job done. Now I don’t know that he would sign here because odds are Marmol is the closer for 2010.

I wouldn’t lose any sleep over signing Valverde, he’s a good pitcher and his antics would probably be fun when they happen in a Cubs jersey.

Just say no to players named Aaron on the Cubs.

His antics

Will make a daily fanpost argument on BCB. Even if he goes 162 for 162 in saves!!

but at least it would stop us from arguing about Z or Milton or Alfonso as much.

Good pitcher but probably too expensive. We need players that can manufacture runs before another late inning guy.

would be worth looking at IMO.

Interesting info on Valverde via a tweet.

From MLB Trade Rumors:

2 birth dates floating around for Jose Valverde…seems that 3/24/78, and not 7/24/79, is correct. So he is 32 when next season begins…

So he’s almost a year and a half older than he’s admitted to being before. Maybe we should steer clear.

I wonder how old Soriano really is?

I remember at work people pondering that when he signed the 8 year deal.

Soriano's age was already adjusted once.

It happened in 2004 when he was with the Rangers:

Alfonso Soriano is 28 years old, not 26, and that didn’t come as a surprise to the Texas Rangers.

The Rangers knew Soriano was older than had been reported in the past when they acquired the two-time All-Star second baseman from the New York Yankees in the trade for American League MVP Alex Rodriguez this week.

“The Yankees were up front. Our people were fully aware of how old he was,” Rangers spokesman Gregg Elkin said Wednesday. “Without a question, that was the information we had.”

The Yankees’ 2003 media guide and other baseball information list Soriano’s birth date as Jan. 7, 1978. He was actually born two years earlier.

So, Soriano is legitimately 33. He was born January 7, 1976. He’ll be 34 before next season starts.

I would dismiss Uggla out of hand.

Valverde? Well, he’s got positively filthy stuff and is one of the better closer’s in the game. Should Hendry take a look? Sure, why not. I wouldn’t go all out, but it wouldn’t hurt to check into. (And I could care less about his annoying antics – believe me, we’d learn to live with them when he was striking out over a batter an inning as he’s done every season of his major league career.)

That said, I’m not expecting to see Valverde wearing a Cubs uniform next year. (Wonder if Phillies will make a run?) Like many others, I think Marmol is going to make the most of this golden opportunity he’s been given to finally grab the Cubs closer job for himself.

Oh, and for those in need of a good laugh, check out Jose Valverde’s brand spankin’ new personal Web page. (WARNING: Very loud music plays! If you’re at work, be sure your volume is turned very low or muted.)
