Cubs Send Out 19 Non-Roster Invites To Spring Training
The Cubs today revealed their list of 19 non-roster invitees to spring training:
Overall, 12 of the 19 invitees are homegrown players either drafted or originally signed by the Cubs. Additionally, each of the club’s last four first-round draft picks will be in camp: outfielder Tyler Colvin (2006, now on the club’s 40-man roster), infielder Josh Vitters (2007), righthander Andrew Cashner (2008) and outfielder Brett Jackson (2009).
Seven pitchers – lefthanders J.R. Mathes and James Russell and righthanders Cashner, Casey Coleman, Thomas Diamond, Jeff Kennard and Vince Perkins – have been invited to major league camp, as well as catchers Robinson Chirinos, Steve Clevenger, Blake Lalli and Chris Robinson. Infielders Darwin Barney, Matt Camp, Starlin Castro, Bryan LaHair, Bobby Scales and Vitters have also been invited, along with outfielders Jackson and Brad Snyder.

Colvin's not an NRI
and what’s the source (your quote mentions Colvin’s roster status, too)?

Colvin isn't among the 19 considered non-roster invites...
He just is one of those last four first-round picks that will be there.

Chirinos and Lalli; gotta go with those former Lugnuts...

Now only 12,859 on the "Cubs Season Tickets Waiting List"...
Great to see the last four first round picks there
Looks like a solid list and then I saw…Bobby Scales. I really hope he stays in AAA this year. Great story and all but I’d rather have a prospect on the roster

Think of it as a reward to Scales for what he did last year
It doesn’t look like the Cubs have any plans for him in 2010.
I hope so

That's true
He got to learn a new position at the expense of the sanity of Cubs fans everywhere. How often does that happen?
is there any chance
Brett Jackson sticks? I can’t imagine.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.
No, please
We want him playing everyday, not sitting on the bench behind Soriano, Fukudome and Byrd.

Yeah, I can't imagine the Cubs have ANY intention of keeping Jackson up...
For one, it’d slow his development. For another, it’d start his service time clock.
I suspect he’s just getting rewarded for a good first year with the organization, and will return to the low/mid minors for the season.
by SouthernCub on Jan 13, 2010 12:51 PM CST up reply actions
Exactly
He’ll be ready right about the time Fukudome/Byrd’s contracts are up

That Clevenger guy looked like he could hit at AAA last year and he is a catcher.
Maybe he sticks…..Snyder seems to be at Spring Trainning every year, just like Scales.
I'm probably the biggest
Clevenger booster, although he slumped badly at the end of last season. I don’t think it’s in the cards for him to win the backup catching job unless there are some serious injuries.

Always good to know what you have
If Koyie/Soto go down, I’m sure he’ll be the first call up

Darn I wanted the guy with the crazy Dutch name
we picked up from the independent league last year. Just wanted to hear the announcer mangle the pronunciation.

Matt Camp
could be valuable bench player if he can hit enough. He can play pretty much any position n the diamond except catcher. He’s got some speed and can draw a walk. Good bunter. No power. The issue is can he hit for on the major league level. I’d like to see him get a shot.
How close is Rebel Ridling to seeing major league action?
Could he be a surprise candidate for the last bench spot?
Catch my act on Twitter as @dat_cubfan_dave.
No
He only played in the Midwest League last year. Guys who have successfully made the jump from the MWL to the majors are Albert Pujols and. . .and . . . and Can’t think of anyone.
Secondlyy, he’s a right-handed first baseman. Even if he could successfully make the jump, I don’t see how useful a right-handed first baseman would be on the Cubs bench.
I’m not a big Ridling fan, but if he is a future major leaguer, his ETA is 2011.
by Josh Timmers on Jan 13, 2010 1:39 PM CST up reply actions
Oh, I assumed he was left-handed for some reason.
That’s too bad – I’d like to see his name on the roster just because, well, it’s a great name. Thanks!

Does this mean we will have no free agent invites?
or do those come later? Usually there are also a handful of veteran free agents looking for another shot that get a look.

The Cardinals are after Valverde?
Why not us? If they get him, next season is going to be unbearable.
"Any player who gets the opportunity to play at Wrigley should welcome it"
The bearableness of next season isn't going to be determined by what players are on other teams...
it’s going to more heavily influenced by what players are on OUR team, and how much they get to play.
i.e Aaron Miles – 2009

Well, it would be nice to have a top level closer in our pen
rather than in our chief rivals pen!!
"Any player who gets the opportunity to play at Wrigley should welcome it"
Seems like we're sticking with Marmol.
I’m hoping Valverde picks Detroit over St. Louis. The only thing worse than losing to the Cardinals would be having to watch his histrionics after the third out.

Yep, seeing that ass-clown hotdogging on the mound after a save
against us, really gets under my skin!!

The Cardinals just signed Ryan Franklin to an extension.
I can’t see them spending more on Valverde. Detroit seems a more logical destination.

Kyler Burke has to stay over at Fitch Park all spring, huh.
Seems like most of his contemporaries in the organization got NRIs…. sorry Kyler. Keep hitting, though.

Excited to see Starlin Castro
This YouTube video was posted recently and I was glad to hear him say he tries to emulate Hanley Ramirez’ game of being a complete player. He was also asked what he thought about a scouts thinking that if he were invited to spring training that he could walk away with a roster spot, he responds by saying that if given the opportunity he’s going to give it all he’s got and he can compete with anyone. He also thinks of himself as a line drive hitter considering he’s still so young but that as he gets older he expect to add a little power to his game.
Another quickie of Castro taking some grounders, notice, no double clutching.

The thing that stands out to me is that we invited a lot of catchers, it seems.
Does that maybe indicate a lack of faith in Soto to rebound?
I could be wrong
but if I recall correctly there usually are a handful of catchers. It is the most demanding position to play therefore having more bodies during ST to rotate keeps guys fresh for when they are needed during the regular season.
by CHCOWNTHECENTRAL on Jan 13, 2010 11:41 PM CST up reply actions
It's more than that.
There will be more split-squad games than usual this spring (five in all, including one the last week). They’ll need the extra catchers just to handle that.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Extra backups
Also, given the possibility, if not likelihood, that either Soto or Hill goes down for any amount of time it will be good for the Cub pitching staff to have some familiarity with the catchers at AAA.
Eamus Ursuli!
I'd like to see Chris Robinson succeed.
He’s the guy we got in the Neifi deal with the Tigers. It would be nice to get a major league return from that deal.
