Cubs Convention Sidebar (Now With Photos!)
I'm sure Al will be posting plenty of info in the main feature well over the next few days. I thought I'd offer a slightly different view here in a sidebar feature. I'll post as often as I can over the weekend. Hopefully this may provide a bit of warmth for those of you who aren't able to join the convention.
A brief look from this morning: the calm before the storm. Empty hallways. Pretty quiet. The hotel staff has the look of impending dread. Hushed conversations, lots of pointing and head nodding.
Starbucks Grande coffee: $3
I didn't partake, but the breakfast and lunch buffet at the restaurant across from the registration desk runs $16.50.
2 eggs, bacon, toast: $15
More later...

1st Annual Wrigley Field Fantasy Camp
Here are a couple of photos of full size displays posted on the Hilton elevator doors at the Cubs Convention. It touts the 1st Cubs Fantasy Camp to be held at Wrigley Field.

Now only 12,859 on the "Cubs Season Tickets Waiting List"...
July 25?
They’re going to have the fantasy campers play the Cardinals, then, apparently. The Cubs are home vs. St. Louis on July 25.

I'd pay money to play the Cardinals...
how sweet would that be? (Even if I haven’t played competitively in about 12 years). :)
It probably wouldn’t be good for the Cubs in the standings however…

Two days? Only two days?
That’s not a fantasy “camp” – that’s more like a fantasy “sleepover”…

Welcome to my neighborhood my cubs fans.
If you want to try something than different than what the Hilton had to offer to eat, I recommend Yolk (just south on Michigan) for breakfast and Flacos Tacos for late night goodness (open til 1am).

Agreed on Flacos
It’s on Dearborn just north of Polk, three blocks west of the Hilton.
Be prepared for a wait at Yolk if you want to go there; it’s usually super busy.
"You know, you should be a lot more careful crossing the street like that, otherwise you could die - if that bothers you."
I recommend in general going outside for eats especially if the weather is not bad.
I stay at the Hilton quite often on business and such. Also been in 5 weddings there where the wedding party stayed there (it’s a gorgeous albeit expensive place to have a wedding picture the grand ballroom for a wedding). I adore the hotel.

One year I had a business function on Thursday night downtown before the convention so I stayed the extra night. Friday morning is eerily quiet almost spooky but sometimes you can snare an autograph.
The restaurant across from registration is really good. We had a long standing Saturday morning breakfast tradition (Friday night dinner at the Buckingham which is the fancier restaurant they used to have).

They have a Starbucks at the Hilton?
That could be good because I got a Starbucks gift card for Christmas at the school I work and this might be a shock, but I don’t know too many custodians that drink Starbucks. If that’s so, thanks for the heads up.
"You just don't know understand how frustrating this is"- Kevin Borseth
If you're lucky
You can get a Marlon Byrd jersey before they’re all gone. I’m sure they’ll be a hot commodity.
You could also probably get a discount on all of the jerseys for the players that Hendry signed or traded for last year (and who contributed to 14 less wins) and who are no longer around. I think there’s five or six of them.
is there anything you DONT complain about?

If you stay at the hotel you’re better off having pizza delivered to you at the hotel than getting food there if the weather is bad but it’s going to be good this weekend.

Exit from the South side in the middle ( across from the coat check I believe). Look
West and you will see a Coffee place ( Caribu ?) on the SW corner. Much cheaper .

There are enough options within a block or two of the hotel. And since the weather isn’t going to be bad, stepping outside isn’t a bad option at least once during the 48 hours.
48 hours
It’s kind of weird it’s like a world in itself for 48 hours. I remember a few years ago everytime we walked by a tv we saw footage of the Queen of England. I finally texted a friend to see if she had died. She hadn’t she was just on tv for one reason or another.

A few notes from Day #1.
1. Went to the bank of elevators on my floor and Jim Hendry was there working his cell phone.
We rode the car down a short way and he said he was very close on signing a couple of guys (free agents I assumed, rather than a trade) and hoped to be able to announce something very soon. Not intending to eavesdrop, I overheard “Tuesday.” He then got a call from “Randy” (Assistant GM Randy Bush?) and said, I’ll be right there.
Say what you will Hendry Bashers, but the guy is a very affable fellow and nice to talk to.
2. There is a guy here wearing Cubs flannel PJs. Wore them ALL day, to every event. Comfy I guess.
3. Man, were there this many people here in 2007? That’s my only other CC. Everywhere you turn, there’s someone wearing Cubs gear “drinking the Kool-ade.” Me too for that matter.
4. Cubs Bingo was fun, but SOOOOO many people. All tables full. The floor was full. Wow. The cash bar in the back was nice though.
5. As expected, LONG lines at the elevators. Long waits on all floors going anywhere; up or down.
6. Got a chance to finally (formally) meet Al at Bingo after playing phone and text tag all day. “Hi Al!”
7. And lastly, this rather amazing story.
Ernie Banks is “my” childhood Cub. He’s why I’m a fan. My sole reason for coming to my first Cubs Convention in 2007 was him. But I was CRUSHED to learn you could only get his autograph by winning a lottery. Naturally, I crapped out on all our cards that year. I was heartbroken all weekend.
This year, I was again a scratch and lose on all of our lottery cards. Mrs. Zeke was in near tears. She know how much meeting Ernie means to me.
I had all but given up hope of ever meeting him, or getting a photo or autograph from him.
After resting a short time in our room, I told my wife I was going to go downstairs and take some photos. I came down and took a ton of shots, many that you see above. I walked the lines and even waited for a few minutes in the registration area hoping a lottery winner would spontaneously offer me an Ernie Banks lotto card.
Right.
After a coupe of seconds contemplating the silliness of that, I moved on. I continued to take pictures along the hallways and then realized I was tired and had had enough.
I decided to take the elevator in the lower level back up to my room. Normally I don’t get on it at this floor. As the door was about to close, this sweet little old lady came rushing up. With a couple of inches to spare, I slid my hand in the elevator door and reopened it for her. Hey, I was brought up right.
Well, she got on holding only her purse and TWO winning lottery tickets for autographs. One ticket was for Andre Dawson, and the other was for: yep, Ernie Banks. My eyes almost popped out on the floor. As we rode, I chatted her up and she said how thrilled she was to get the Dawson card, but didn’t really care about the Banks card. She said she had gotten “lots of his autographs over the years.”
I gulped and told her my story. “Would you consider selling the Banks card?”, I asked. “Oh sure”, she replied.
Prepared to get a $ jolt, she said: “How much?” Before I could answer with $50, she said: “I paid $20.”
Uh, “$30?”, I asked. She said: “Oh! That would be lovely”. We stepped off the elevator, completed the transaction and then chatted for several minutes. She was as sweet as you could imagine.
Consider the course of events and how any minor deviation from what I was doing on Friday would have NOT placed me at that exact place and time to hold that elevator door.
So Saturday afternoon I finally get to meet Ernie and have him autograph my 1969 #14 jersey. I’ll frame it and hang it in my home.
So angels DO exist…

I see Hendry all the time as he lives in the same town I do. He is really nice.
He goes to a place I go to often and a friend has talked to him quite a few times and he is not a baseball fan. He didn’t know that Hendry was the Cubs GM until we both saw him there and he asked how I knew him.
Hendry had just said “I am General Manager at the company I work for” He was glad to talk to someone who didn’t barrage him about news and the owners of the place never said anything. They have other things in common they talk about.

Does anyone know who the little boy with Rhyno is? I was assuming his grandson? Is it really possible that Ryne Sandberg is a grandfather?
He has at least one
Ryno threw out the first pitch at the Oct. 3 game I went to and then did the stretch holding a small child, who he called his grandson. It was hard to tell from where I was how big the child he was holding was but the child in this photograph looks to be the same one.
