Well, this would be excellent news.

Let’s see if it happens.

I agree

Hendry kind of downplayed it, didn’t he?

Yeah.

A lot. But that’s Hendry’s usual MO — he rarely negotiates in public.

Agreed, but in the "sweetheart" session

He made it sound like they weren’t interested.

LOL @ "sweetheart session".

Yeah, he made it sound like that — but I didn’t hear him specifically dismiss it completely, either.

Yeah, I dno't remember Hendry EVER negotiating in public.

That’s what I like about him.

Hendry was all over the place

I could have talked to him for an hour. Good to see him out in the open and what not but I figured he wouldn’t have the time. Good and bad. Not sure if it’s good that he’s out there: he could be making deals (or should be). But good to know he’s not just a guy behind a desk and seems to care about the fans.

Very interesting

What are we going to do with all these starting pitchers?

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

You can never have too many starting pitchers.

Sheets was a top of the rotation pitcher

If healthy, and IF Lilly does return healthy and IF Zambrano is actually in shape and if Dempster does return to his ’08 level and if Wells is not one hit wonder than….

This is a real rotation to be reckoned with, and therefore rent a Silva through April and May is what appears to be part of the master plan…

Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."

by Ivy Walls on Jan 18, 2010 11:02 AM CST up reply actions

We don't really need all those "ifs" to say the rotation will be good.

Dempster and Z were still good in 2010. But what you do is give yourself enough high ceiling options that you can have as many top of the line pitchers for the playoffs and if we’ve got three, we’ll be strong. Add Sheets and we’ve got a good chance of having three.

"We’re going to come back here next year healthy and do what we’re supposed to do, and we’re going to be all right. That’s not Hendry’s fault. He thought it was the right move. It didn’t work out. But at the same time, he’s the same guy that put back-to-back championship teams together." - Aramis Ramirez

Certainly a better problem to have than

“what are we going to do without enough starting pitchers?”

I’m sure you can find plenty of people who will tell you there’s no such thing as too many good starting pitchers. This is a problem worth having.

"all these starting pitchers?"

Right now we have Dempster and Zambrano has the only “sure things” in the rotation. Wells is certainly in the rotation, but it remains to be seen if he is again solid in the rotation this year. After that, you have Lilly (who will likely miss April) and Gorzellany, Marshall, and Silva. None of those last three are guys who you’d start ahead of a potentially healthy Sheets.

If we do sign Sheets (and if Sheets is healthy enough to be a productive starter), then we have a stronger bullpen and Gorzellany either goes to the pen or goes to AAA to be the 6th starter. And if Sheets isn’t healthy, then either Marshall or Gorzellany (or Silva if he finds some magic) will jump into the 5th spot. It’s not like Sheets would be bumping a potential Cy Young winner to the bullpen here. It’s always nice to have options for the back end of the rotation.

I was being more facetious than anything

I know starting pitching is king and I would like to have him. This is an area where I think teams should deal from strength. I just don’t see Silva in the bullpen working out very well.

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

by mrcubsfan on Jan 18, 2010 9:39 AM CST up reply actions

Sorry I missed the sarcasm...

And I agree that Silva isn’t likely to work out – either in the pen or the rotation. The good news is that if he doesn’t work out hopefully the team will just DL him or release him and not have him take meaningful innings from better pitchers just to “make the trade worthwhile.”

by SouthernCub on Jan 18, 2010 10:28 AM CST up reply actions

If Sheets signs with the Cubs and is healthy

I could see Silva being moved when Lilly returns. They won’t get much for him, but if he can get the occasional out, the Cubs could get some salary relief and the proverbial PTBNL.

by ClarkFan on Jan 18, 2010 11:44 AM CST up reply actions

Probably trade 'em after rotation/bullpen is set.

by Ryno Runner on Jan 18, 2010 11:47 AM CST up reply actions

My guess is that either Marshall or Gorzo would be traded ...

I know, I know — you can never have too much pitching, and I know that Silva is far from a safe bet. But think of it like this:

Rotation: Z, Sheets, Dempster, Wells, Lilly/Silva. Barring unforeseen injuries (or a slide by Wells), the only real question is whether Silva would be the fifth starter until Lilly’s return — and fifth starters aren’t that necessary in April.

The sure bets in the pen are Marmol, Guzman and Grabow, with Gray as very probable. I’d bet that either Caridad or Berg gets a spot, too, and the Cubs (from recent comments) seem intent on signing a free-agent righty to fill Heilman’s role.

So, Marmol, Guzman, Grabow, Gray, Free-agent righty, Caridad/Berg That leaves one spot for Marshall, Gorzo, Shark, Caridad/Berg, Parisi, Patton.

My guess is Shark starts the season in Iowa as a starter and either Marshall or Gorzo gets the final spot in the pen. I bet the Cubs end up trading Marshall to somebody like Kansas City, where he can get a chance to finally start for a full season. Gorzo stays as the long man in the pen AND as insurance in case Lilly/Silva causes problems.

by elgato on Jan 18, 2010 12:06 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with this for the most part...

…though I still don’t get Hendry’s insistence on adding to the bullpen. Isn’t Gray essentially Heilman’s replacement?

And I just realized I’ve been completely forgetting about Samardzija. I hope you’re right and he starts the season at Triple A – assuming the Cubs intend to stick with him as a starter.

Oh, I'm not saying I agree with it

I hate spending money on middle relievers. I’m just figuring in the stated strategy.

Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sheets ends up somewhere else (though I think he will be a Cub). The team’s comments recently seem to indicate that shopping for a starter isn’t top priority.

by elgato on Jan 18, 2010 12:46 PM CST up reply actions

Exciting stuff if it's true.

I haven’t seen the Cubs portrayed as such a sure thing anywhere else, though.

This would

be great news. I sure hope this comes to be. He gets healthy we could have a good rotation.

Sure would be nice

Add a healthy Sheets and a turnaround for Silva .. At one time he had to have been good to get that kind of contract .. i am trying to be positive here .

Bruce Miles contradicts this rumor

here in the comments section.

That report is not accurate at all. Even if Sheets’ price drops to $6-8 million, the Cubs are not doing that. He’s coming off an injury that cost him a year, and he is not throwing in a game situation. He’s also had a history of injury problems. The Cubs are busy today working on arbitration stuff. I’m not even sure which scout they’ll have in Arizona tomorrow. But that report is not accurate.

I still hope we manage to get Sheets.

We will see

The longer the days go, Sheets prices will have to go down. To me Sheets is worth the risk.

I'd find a Sheets signing pretty exciting, too...

…but given Hendry’s comments about Harden at the Cubs Convention this weekend (something about never being sure when an injury would hit), I can see where Bruce is coming from. Maybe Jimbo has exhausted his risk tolerance for high-risk, high-reward starters and intends to stick with what he’s got. Not sure what to believe at this point.
