Wrigley Field Scoreboard Renovation Photo Update #1

This is the first in an occasional series that will update all of you on the project to repaint the back of the Wrigley Field scoreboard, the side that faces the corner of Waveland & Sheffield.

So far, the Cubs have put up scaffolding, and as you can see by this photo, they have removed the neon "CHICAGO CUBS" that would light up the neighborhood at night, in order to repaint.

I'll stop by the ballpark, or David Sameshima will, every so often until this project is finished to create a photographic record of the renovation. More photos after the jump. Photos taken at 3:30 pm, Wednesday, January 20.

This is long overdue.

I’ve stood at Murphy’s looking at this for the pas few years and the lack of paint and rotted boards really looked tacky. It needed much repair and updated painting. I’ll be anxious to see the final product.

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

Our worst fears are being realized.

Ricketts isn’t going to sell the naming rights to the park, he’s sold them to the team. Will Chicago Vienna All-Beef Wieners fit on the pennant on the back of the scoreboard? Anyway, go Wieners!

Does that mean half of the home stands will be played in Vienna?

Too bad they couldn't get rid of the Budlight.

I’d like to see that replaced with something with more flavor…like Guinness or Fuller’s Porter.

I like it

I’m sure Bud pays big money to the team and unlike smaller brewers, they have the advertising budget to sign long term contracts giving us recurring revenue streams. IMO, the Budlight sign behind the scoreboard is one of the most unobstrusive brewing advertisements in MLB.

I have no problem

with the sign or the advertising. I just don’t like the taste of Budlight. I also think of Bud/Anheuser Busch as the beer of our biggest rival so I’m more of an Old Style person when I go to the games.

I think the Ricketts family...

…recognizes that Wrigley is in pretty good shape, but also that it needs some cosmetic work. Not to mention the The Friendly Confines Cafe needs major renovation.

But that doesn’t mean that they should let facilities like the Friendly Confines Cafe (I believe this is the one I’m thinking of) get into such bad shape. I’m even more surprised that they start off the Wrigley Field tours there now.

but the scaffolding was ever present on some building. Like the netting under the upper deck at Wrigley, the scaffolding would stay for years. Probably cheaper to put up the scaffolds vs. make the building repairs.

There were fans who would happily wear their anti-Cubs shirts, who’d yell at people that "This isn’t Wrigley!" and bash on the Cubs when the White Sox did poorly.

so yes, both teams have knucklehead fans, and coming here looking to get peoples into a pissing match, you only are adding to it. I made some comments back in reply to yours, and I should have just ignored your ignorance and attempt to get me to do exactly what i did.

I Still Haven't Found What I Looking For...

In the past we discussed this issue and you told me that Cubbie fans here often have a “visceral reaction to the White Sox” and their fans & that you disapprove of that “visceral reaction.”

You asked me if I had any ideas on how you could curtail the non-baseball ugly smears of Sox fans on BCB. My response:

“It’s really quite easy. Speak up. Let people know that those ugly smears are not allowed. If you or other prominent members spoke up against those smears it would carry much more weight and authority than condemnations by me. Your silence in the face of those oft repeated smears is taken by the offenders as tacit approval.”

The guy in the front row of the bleachers had a mullet. The guy in the YES shirt had a mullet too, albeit the lesser mullet.

CUBBIES WIN THE ATTENDANCE/POPULARITY CONTEST! YIPPIE!

But here’s the point, which you are running away from, your Cubbie fan friends were smearing Sox fans as though mullets were unique to Sox fans. The proof is right there, they are not.

Interesting that so many Cubbie fans have to elevate themselves by smears & put-downs of Sox fans. Bashing the Sox and Sox fans is common even at “Cubbie Convention.” Arm-chair psycho-analyists, what is that these Cubbie fans suffer from, chronic insecurity? Delusions of grandeur? World Championship Envy?

And yes the Cubbies have more fans and hence their attendance is better than the Sox. So and you win what is apparently the most important thing to many Cubbie fans, The Attendance/Popularity Game! Congratulations!!! Where do they display those Attendance/Popularity Trophies at Wrigley? Is it next to the videos of the Cubbies last World Championship?

I hate ignorance, which you sadly bring here too often. COngrats for that. And guess what, the Sox fans, and their employees (cough STEVE STONE cough) love to take jabs at the Cubs as often if not more often. I have never heard Brenley, Santo, Hughes, Otto, Kasper, etc make comments about the Sox as Stone does. So why dont you stop trying to play a game you cannot and will not win.

By the way, you did seem to skip over where I made mention of Sox fans charging the unpire, which was a true thing, right?

Not true, Eric Dybass, the Ump Jumper is a Cubbie fan...
""He’s (Dybas) a Cubs fan anyway," Kostouros (Dybas attorney) said." - Chicago Sun-Times
A close friend and roommate, Tony Consalvo, 21, said he was surprised by the accusations leveled against Dybas, whom he said is an avid Cubs fan. - Chicago Tribune
Dybas is a Cubs fan who had too much to drink Tuesday night, his girlfriend, Kelly Sherwood, told WGN-AM.

""Sometimes he drinks and gets like that, but nothing like (what happened Tuesday)," Sherwood said. “He’s a Cubs fan …” - Daily SouthTown

Attorney, close friend and girlfriend were no doubt Sox fans in a conspiracy to frame one of the angelic host of Cubbie fans.

The comment was clearly about your uninformed comment (ignorant?) about the ump jumpers and how you ran away from evidence that your accusation was bull-feces.

If you think my comment was in regards to Steve Stone, you need to read and/or follow the discussion more closely.

I briefly perused the link though and saw this comment:

Frankly, Steve Stone hates Milton Bradley. At least it seems that way. – July 2009

And now many (if not most) Cubbie fans have come to agree with Stone on Bradley.

Again...

… Steve Stone is paid by the SCORE to be an (alleged) Chicago baseball expert and as such he had an opinion about Bradley.

I’ve made clear I do not like Steve Stone. But the guy is a baseball fan and someone who clearly follows the Cubbies. He has opinions on them as Cubbie fans often here post their opinions on the Sox.

How to win the hearts of Cubbie fans, take a swipe at the Sox...
I have not seen or heard Cub employees ripping into the Sox and their fanbase.

I guess you haven’t read this recent article, with this jab at the Sox by the Cubbies new marketing goof:

When someone mentioned the South Side team during a question-and-answer session, Hayward started off his answer by saying: ""First of all, who are the White Sox?"

The response drew loud cheers.

So much for Cubbie brASS not taking swipes at the Sox. So much for Cubbie fans not caring at all about the Sox.

Question

did Stone have the same comments about Buehrle pitching a perfect game that he made about Lou here?

‘’I don’t agree with allowing Zambrano to throw 110 pitches,‘’ Stone said Tuesday on ’’The Mike North Webio Show’’ on wildfirerestaurant.com. ‘’I don’t care if it’s a no-hitter. The only job that Lou Piniella has to do, and still has to do, is make sure his pitchers are ready.

’’I would have pulled him in the sixth. A manager is paid for some very tough decisions and no-hitters are delightful. You can always say you have a no-hitter.

’’He is becoming Sammy [Sosa] Jr. They are creating another monster on the North Side.

I directly answer your assertion...

… about the Ump Jumper, which you had said I skipped over. It was one of your early “ignorant” accusations posted here and it’s been proven to be based on ignorance. Perhaps you seek out Eric Dybass and apologize for calling him a Sox fan.

Regarding Stone, I’m not aware of him blasting the Cubbies while broadcasting for the Sox. I’ve often read Cubbie fans here talking about how he blasted the Cubbies unfairly in his role as (alleged) Chicago baseball expert on the SCORE. IIRC in most cases rarely is there any substance for the claims that he’s blasted the Cubbies.

But my feelings on Stone are the same as when he was a Cubbie broadcaster. He’s arrogant & condescending, especially in response to callers. I think that that is what folks mainly respond to, negatively. I don’t think Stone has changed all that much. What has changed though is many Cubbie fans reactions to him.

How about you, have your feelings about Stone changed since he left the Cubbies?

Regarding Guillen…yes he loves have fun with Cubbie fans (I think that’s largely reserved for interleague games). And the Cubbie fans give it right back to him. An example, when they showed Guillen on the Hawks video board the other day and Cubbie fans in attendance went ballistic, especially when he pointed to his World Series Championship ring.

Wrigley Field, yes I think he hates that place and in the eyes of many Wrigley-Cubbie fans that sacrilege, which I think eggs him on even more. In the end, I don’t think Guillen hates or even dislikes the Cubbies. Guillen enjoys getting Cubbie fans like you all riled up. No doubt Guillen laughs about how easy it is.

So, now I’ve answered each of your accusations, right?

Remember how he called into a radio station to bash the comments being made, and he ripped into the on air talent? was that also just having fun?

Yes, in fact I did...

… I was sitting directly behind YES shirt guy. They were NASCAR fans FWIW. I had a fun night at the game. The mullet wearing, NASCAR loving folks were fine folks. And frankly I don’t care if they wear a mullet or love NASCAR, they are not my things, but it doesn’t really bother me that they enjoy those things. It was just so funny to have the stereotype of Sox fans that’s often spewed by Cubbie fans sitting right in front of me at Wrigley. Damn funny.

I am not going to argue in behalf of Ozzie Guillen and/or Steve Stone with you. As I’ve said Stone is arrogant and many Sox fans would agree with you about Guillen being a jackass. Fine with me.

If you have complaints about Stone’s comments on the SCORE, perhaps you should address those to SCORE management.

If you find my comments here to be “baiting” or trying to “egg” folks on then some might urge you to not respond to me, which would be fine with me if you were to follow that advice.

“Cry to Al”? That’s AndrewJStone’s forte. This poster had a signature that decried “political correctness.” I sent AndrewJStone an email based on the racist-tinged post he was defending. His email address is publicly listed on his BCB page. I choose to address that matter in an email to him. AndrewJStone found my email so horribly offensive that he immediately posted it here (in an effort to rally a mob against me, no doubt). Email number 2 and my final email to him, I sent him a Pen/Teller gif calling him an A.H., which sentiment I stand by. Then Stone ran crying to Al. And he’s been inflating that exchange and whining and crying about it here every since. If I hurt AndrewJStone’s feelings or offended him, I’d apologize. However, considering how he’s lied about the discussion and continually inflated it and perpetually posts about it here it’s clear to me at least that he was not offended by my politically incorrect joke, but he keeps using it to fuel hate for me here.

I’ve cried to Al once, when a BC stalker began posting my personal information on this board in a clear effort to intimidate me. I haven’t whined to Al about the ugly emails I get from Cubbie fans. I mark them as spam/junk and move on.
