Around SBN: Indy 500: 'Greatest Spectacle In Racing' Set For Sunday

From Bruce Miles' blog: Mark Johnson, who was in camp last spring and caught at Iowa, will be back... and so will Scott McClain, who had one of the greatest spring trainings I ever saw, back in 2005. He played in Japan last year.

Anyone know how McClain did in Japan?

I remember his great spring training.

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

NPB

Now has an official English Language site!

Here are the stats for the 2009 Hiroshima Carp.

.244/.320/.424 Nothing to get excited about. Well, except for NPB now having an official English Language site.

Except

the Cubs are probably more concerned with how good a teammate he is and how many positions he can play rather than how good he is for the I-Cubs.

The sad truth is that minor league teams aren’t constructed to win.

How old is McClain?

I mean, maybe he could make it as a backup..

matt stairs is also steroids

Matt Stairs, who is still hoping to land a job at the age of 41, has dropped 31 pounds in order to get himself in game shape, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com. In 129 plate appearances last season, Stairs posted .194/.357/.379 with 5 HRs.

If he makes the Cubs

it will be the Iowa Cubs, not the Chicago Cubs.

Sometimes you need quality bodies to fill out minor league rosters.

If I read this correctly,

they are not NRI to the Cubs camp, but they will be in the minor league camp. Or am I mistaken?

The Cubs have signed a couple of familiar faces to minor-league deals and invited them to spring training but without invites to big-league camp. Catcher Mark Johnson was in big-league camp last year as nonroster guy, and he played 22 games at Class AAA Iowa.

McClain is a future coach

I’d guess that after another year or so in the Cubs system, he goes straight to a job as a Rookie League manager or A-ball hitting coach somewhere.

I would love to be in his shoes

Turns out nobody is looking for a 28 year old coach with minimal pro experience.
