Why Are You a Cubs Fan?
In reference to the recent post by bdlugz, this got me wondering. What makes you a fan of the Cubs? Are you a Cubs fan for geographic reasons, for family reasons, or for some other reason? Spare no details, let us all know why you cheer for the Cubbies.
For me, I grew up away from Wrigley Field, and my parents largely were not baseball fans. However, when I was very little, I had a Chicago Cubs jacket which I wore everywhere. I began leaning toward the Cubs in the 1998 season due to the home run chase then, but hid the fact that I was a Cubs fan until the second half of the 2003 season.
I remember sitting in the dormitory at college, heartbroken after the Cubs failed to reach the World Series, but I kept reminding myself, "There's always next year." My grandfather, a lifelong Cubs fan, also kept telling me this. It turns out there is a long line of Cubs fans on my mother's side, and I am merely the latest one in the family to be a Cubs fan.
But enough about me, what about you? Why are you a Cubs fan?

Seriously, (I've posted this before)...
I grew up in SW Michigan. All our broadcast media was from Chicago. We had a console B&W TV (…what’s “black and white” daddy?) that got only got 5 channels. 2, 5, 7, 9 and 11; all accessed by a rotary dial you turned on the side of the console.
I’d come home after school and watch the game, usually picking it up in progress. With the hour time difference in Michigan (one hour later), I got to see a lot more of the games that perhaps some of my counterpart students coming home from school in Illinois. I loved listening to Jack Brickhouse on TV and Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau on radio. I’d fall asleep at night when the Cubs were playing on the west coast with a transistor radio under my pillow.
In the mid-1960s, my dad took me to Wrigley Field for a game when I was maybe 9 or 10 or so. We walked up the main ramp from the concourse behind home plate. I saw the playing field IN COLOR for the first time. I was blown away by how beautiful the field was and GREEN it was. It was so green it almost hurt your eyes.
I loved the park. I loved Ernie Banks. I loved the team. Back then, the reserve clause kept players with one team. I felt like the core group of players like Banks, Williams, Santo, Beckert, Kessinger, Jenkins, Hands, Holtzman, etc. were MY guys. They were Cubs year after year.
“Let’s Play Two!”
Then it was cemented in 1969. Despite the heartache of not winning a title, there always WAS next year.
Now only 12,859 on the "Cubs Season Tickets Waiting List"...
I married Zeke
in 1983. I had grown up a Tigers fan. (Mark Fidrych was the player that really opened baseball up to me.) In 1984, when the Tigers and the Cubs were headed into the playoffs, Zeke was beside himself with excitement—threatening to cut and sew a custom Cubs/Tigers hat. I started watching Cubs games with him. His excitement was palpable, and contagious. During that stretch drive, he told me about the Cubs and the traditions. His obvious relationship with this team inspired my relationship with them. I am a Cubs fan because for the Cubs, it is about baseball. Not about money, or flash, or individual players, but about the game. My first visit to Wrigley sealed the deal—watching baseball in a park, not a “venue”. Under the sun, played on grass, with a real organ, not “spirit music”. It took me 13 tries to finally see my Cubbies get a win at Wrigley—but I kept hoping. And I still am.
By the way—I still hate Steve Garvey.

Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

My dad was
and when I moved to Arizona, I felt like that was the team to choose.
I became a Cubs fan
thanks to this game, on May 10, 2008, the first Major League Baseball game I ever attended. The Cubs won 7-2, and Kosuke Fukudome hit his second HR as a Cub. From that moment on, the Cubs were my team and Kosuke was my player. Not even two later trips to Busch Stadium (a more logical choice geographically) could sway me from that point on.
as a youth
i had a friend who was a big baseball fan while i was not. while thumbing through his baseball card collection something about the cub cards caught my eye.jenkins, banks, williams and all the others. why? who knows. as my love for the game grew it was time to pick a team. living in red sox country you would think it would be a pretty easy choice.I PICKED THE CUBS. and once the cubs get in your heart there is no looking back. as far as not winning in 101 years.what team would not trade a world series title for the love loyalty and adulation a cub fan brings to the table.
Again...
… I point everyone to this post I made in 2005, not long after BCB started, which I recently reopened to comments.

Whoops...
“Dammit, let’s go out and win it. It’s way past time. Root harder than you have ever rooted. Put everything you feel inside you into it. The 2005 Cubs aren’t the best team they’ve ever had and yes, they’re flawed in many ways.”
Cubs ended up 4th in the NL Central. Ouch!

Ouch is right.
But hey, that’s five years ago. Every spring brings new hope.

and I don’t mean the “Geography” in the Hanna thread although I must admit that sure doesn’t hurt

Because I love baseball.
I have loved baseball every day of my life (that I can remember). I love baseball because I love the summer, the way you can feel it coming, the way spring creeps in with its wet smells and its lively sounds and reminds you what’s just ahead. The summers of my youth seemed to stretch on forever, then the air would dry out, and the days slowly shortened, until all that was left was October.
What team better embodies this than the Cubs? Maybe you could argue the Yankees or Red Sox or Indians, but for me the Cubs really best represent the eternal spring of hope that comes as every winter passes. I followed the Cubs a little bit growing up in Iowa, but also the Twins, Royals, and Cardinals. I was a National League guy, but I never really had a team that I called mine. When I moved to Chicago at the end of the 90’s, I wanted to go see Wrigley Field. More than anything, I wanted to see that place up close. So I went with my friends on my birthday in the first week of June.
The first time I ascended the stairs and saw that field spread out in its green splendor in front of me, it just felt like home. It was the ivy there, now filled in nicely, that stood as the signpost of the seasons. As April starts, it’s brown and bare, only promise, then as the summer approaches, it puffs out its leaves and trumpets the season to everyone who sees it. It reminds me of why I love baseball.
So the answer to the question, why the Cubs? Geography opened the door; Wrigley sealed the deal.

I think every baseball fan gets that reaction when they see Wrigley for the first time
It seems to embody all things Baseball and exclude most things which are Not Baseball. It’s a wonder and a shrine. Those who call it a dump…well, they may have a bit of a point, but it’s our dump and our team plays there, so they can cram it.

The very first baseball game I ever attended was in Wrigley Field.
I was a child. Six or seven, maybe. Certainly not in double figures.
Got me early, they did…
WGN and 1969 for me...
I was one of those kids who got hooked with the after-school broadcasts on WGN; most of my friends were Cub fans, too. And the whole ’69 season, when I was an impressionable lad, really was an exciting experience.
I should note that I also followed and rooted for the White Sox back then; my memory is sketchy and I wasn’t old enough to be aware of all the social dynamics, but I don’t recall there being as much friction between the fan bases back then.
We moved away from Chicago when I was 12, and I formed allegiances with a couple of AL teams, but the Cubs have always had first place in my heart. There’s just something eternal about them, something that seems to speak to that summertime feeling that Goodie1969 described so well. And yes, Wrigley itself is a big part of this – it felt so good to see a game there in ’08, even if we did get shellacked by the (#*# Nationals.
I tend to be a pretty rational guy, and I think maintaining this attachment to a sports team is one way of keeping the other parts of my brain fresh…..it doesn’t stand up to analysis or logic, but it’s just such a self-evidently fun thing that I’ve never been able to let go.

there are a lot of reasons why I am a Cubs fan.
but there is something very special about being at Wrigley, which is a part of being a Cubs fan. Not many places left where I can sit in a seat, and in that same seat (not seat itself, but seat location) my dad, grandfather, great grandfater, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, uncle, etc and future generations can/could sit in that exact same seat. It is an extension to our family history, and i am sure that rings true for the vast majority of long term, multi generational Cub fans.
I went to my first game before I was 1 year old, dad and uncle broke me in early. My father loves to tell me stories of being a young kid going to the bars with him around Wrigley, where I would pretend to hit a ball, run a circle, and slide into home. He loves to explain that before you knew it, many of the people at the bar would start calling me out or safe based on the calliber of my slide, and the bartenders were always fast to keep me hydrated with a kiddie cocktail during this.
My father never left a game early, and we would always go to the players parking lot after a game while waiting for the crowd to lessen (my father usually took one of us at a time for a special day, but sometimes it would be my dad, uncle and three kids).
I learned how to do math using box scores or verbal math problems from my father (tim, if Ryno hits 2 Hrs, a single, and three doubles today, while Jody has three singles and two strike outs, what is their batting averages, how much better was Sandberg’s and how many total bases did they have together, for example).
I guess, for me and I am sure others, it is not just the Cubs, and their history, but how our family history is linked to so many parts of their history. In 1945 my grandfather cried, in 69 my dad, uncle and grandfather cried, and in 84, 89, 98, 03, 07, and 08 more Coyle’s cried as the family.
The Cubs are not just a bseball team that we cheer for, they are not just something we enjoy for the summer and then tuck away for the off season (BCB’s daily hit count I would believe alone proves this lol) but the Chicago Cubs National League Baseball Club is an extension to the family tree, and my two month old neice has her Cubs onsies ready for opening day to continue on with this tradition.

For me, I became a fan during the 07- 08 seasons.
I really didn’t know anything about the game, especially being from Brazil where soccer dominates the sports world there.(I’m still a huge soccer fan). My parents know nothing really of baseball or other sports here in the US and when I moved here, I didn’t get whats the point of the pitcher or the batter. I didn’t understand the game. I began to understand whenever WGN telivised the games.
In 07, I didn’t really follow them. I didn’t care about them, I didn’t even catch games on TV and I didn’t even care if they won or lost. When they missed the playoffs, I didn’t really care.
In 08, I remember seeing the season opener and Fukudome’s three run homer and well, that got me started. I still missed a lot of games ( we don’t have comcast) but I watched more of the sports news and see how they were doing. I didn’t know that you could listen to games on the radio so I followed them on the computer. (It sucked) I remember once when they played the Marlins when and when Daryle Ward hit a game winning home run against the Marlins (against Gregg, by the way). I saw the live up dates on the computer when the Cubs faced the Dodgers in the playoffs and I remember when James Loney (was it him?) hit that grand-slam and I just stared at the computer screen in disbelief. I caught the last game when my travel soccer team went to Milwaukee for a tournament and I just watched sadly as the Cubs failed to produce any scoring sort of scoring chance as the season ended right there.
In 09, my dad got me a Walkman to listen to the games and I listened to all of them, even when they sucked and were out of the playoffs. I slammed on the couch when ever Gregg blew a save (especially against Detroit) or when they failed to get that clutch hit to send the game to extra innings. I really feel now that I understand the game ever since I started to follow the Cubs and I expect them to do well this year.

The 1997 season
I became a Cub fan — I had family in Chicago and my grandfather and I would always watch the daily Cubs afternoon games (on WGN) because I started fall in love with the sport.
I feel in love shortly thereafter with the players, organization, colors, stadium, and feeling of cheering for the Cubs. I loved them to death and even though I might of watched the game earlier in the day I would love to sit and watch highlights of the game because I couldn’t get enough.
I’ve been a huge Cub fan since those moments and I will always be one.
2010 is OUR year.

I was a Texas kid
Well, Im 28 and still a Texas kid. When I was growing up it was all about football. The Cowboys were winning Superbowls so thats what I was most into. I like playing all three major sports but only followed baseball during the playoffs when I could see the games on tv. I wasnt a Braves fan but I would usually go for them.
Around April or May 95 I finally got cable, changed my world. I became an even bigger sports nut. During that summer the afternoons were too hot to play outside and the only sports playing at that time were on good ole WGN. I would watch two or three games a week but I wasnt hooked until the 96 season. I went from three Superbowl wins to….. the Cubs. But it was more than the Cubs it was also Harry Caray, Wrigley Field, and Chicago. As a fifteen year old from a small town in the middle of nowhere, I fell in love with everything Harry was selling. At first I would always think, “Why is this old man with a weird voice and big glasses still calling games”. He quickly won me over. Everyone mentions their grandfathers and and rest of their family as a big reason why they are fans. Harry and even Steve Stone were my Cubs family. I only experienced Harry for two years but I was as sad as anyone the day he passed.
In 2003 I went to my first Cubs game in Houston about a week after we traded for Ramirez and Lofton. Cubs won 5-3 and we were 4 games out. I knew we were on our way to a special season. As much as I loved the playoff run and the environment in and around Wrigley there was one thing missing. It was me. I sat in my room and wished and cheered like crazy, alone.
I was 22 and still didnt really what I wanted to do with my life. After that season, I knew I had to get to Chicago. Not just to see a Cubs game or to see Wrigley but because I was a Chicagoan and I was a Cub.
I now live in Chicago, but I also spend time in Texas. I live and breathe Cubs baseball because its who I am.
She asked: Are you a hopeless romantic?

When i copied and pasted the COMMENT_CHILDREN_TOKEN (inside the double brackets) in to a new comment, it broke it.

You only need one @ on the sides of the comment. For example:

Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. I don’t agree with Drew in every case. He’s far more optimistic than i could ever be. I admire it, and i hate negative nancies that delight in crapping on him just because he doesn’t share their doom and gloom view of cubbie fandom.

When they get to a series and stop making stupid moves many of your "negative Nancies" will have to shut up.
But until then, all the happiness is pretty funny.
I enjoy the Cubs, but it would be nice to win in my grandfathers lifetime.
Debbie Downer was hilarious!!!!!!!! Especially the one where she was at Disney.
Like I said, win something and that will shut people up.
Until then, 101 years is a long time and they deserve to be questioned and not completely trusted.
The current management is responsible...
… only for the last eight years in the case of Jim Hendry, three years in the case of Lou, and about three months in the case of Tom Ricketts.
Anything before that is history.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
It's too early to make that judgment.
The Cubs have signings to make, and I haven’t seen them play a single spring training game yet, nor has anyone else played one.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
You are getting off point.
Yes, all moves by this (and every other team) should be watched by their fanbase. In the case of the cubs, 101 years has nothing to do with anything, as there have been multiple changes in ownership and coaching in that time. I doubt you’ve been around for the whole century anyways.
And all of that has nothing to do with your perpetual baiting of Drew. Don’t act like you don’t…. your first two comments in this thread were of no purpose other than that.

Frankly dude, predictablity isn't a bad thing.
I’m pretty consistent with my views here.
You’ll find that in my nearly 3000 comments here, i’ve never been called a troll, never called anybody a name, and have generally managed to carry myself with some dignity. So when i engage in conversation, even with people who don’t agree with me (this happens often), we can carry on a civil conversation, much unlike the ones you have on a regular basis.
You are predictable as well. You’ll take every chance you can to bait the more positive of posters around here in to menial and personal arguments over semantics. You would much rather argue the sort of stuff we are talking about in this thread (New Coke?) than actual baseball. And you do it all with an air of pompous superiority that tends to rub many here the wrong way.
It is what it is, and we should probably all just ignore you. We won’t. Oh well.

To clarify this...
… if you question somebody about something, i won’t need to “protect”. A normal, civil conversation will ensue and everybody will have a fine and dandy time of it.
You don’t do that, many times. Now, i’m quite sure you feel that there are a bunch of us here that are dicks, and that the problem isn’t you, but let me assure you – the way you engage in conversation rubs people in a bad way, and for that there is nobody to blame but yourself. When that side of you comes out, somebody is likely to call you on it. As i did here.
I don’t think you are incapable of contributing to the conversation in a meaningful way. I just think you enjoy poking people with a stick to see if they’ll fight back, and its irritating.

Agree with what?
She wasn’t stating a fact, she was asking a question. For the record:
MB – Glad he’s gone in terms of pure sanity for the fanbase, but doubt it was a good decision as far as putting the best team on the field.
Soriano – Sucked last year. Was hopefully injured and will get better. I’m willing to cut some slack considering what he did for us in 07 and 08.
Lou – Getting old, manages old, still knows more about baseball than you and i and everyone else here combined.
New Coke – Like drew, i don’t drink pop.

The only question she asked was about New Coke.
The rest was sarcasm which I agreed with.
As far as your comment….
MB is a fool and I am glad he is gone. Is he more talented than other people? I am sure he is. He’s probably better than Byrd. But he had to go and that is on JH for bringing him here in the first place.
Lou I like, But is probably done. I wish we got the Lou that managed the Reds, not the old one that acts like he doesn’t care.
New Coke-It was a funny line by DS, who gives a shit if you 2 drink pop.
You are a perplexing individual.

I wasn't a fan of baseball until the summer of '08. My girlfriend and her family are all Cubs fans,
but noone in my family watched/cared for baseball. It was the summer of my graduation, so I didn’t really have anything to do, except work and get ready for college. My girlfriend would watch cubs games while I was at her place, and it got me into baseball. I chose the Cubs: a) because she was a Cubs fan, B) I don’t like the Brewers because like everyone from my town/school/college like the Brewers and they just aren’t as appealing to me.

Why?
When I was a kid my Grandmother (who never missed a game on tv) use to take me on the Narragansett bus to Addison then to Wrigley on when they had them (Al help me out)"Ladies Days".
I remember the days when if you got to the park early enough you use to be able to get past the Andy Fran ushers and get ALL the autographs you wanted and get this. They didn’t cost a dime.
I suppose growing up on the north side you had to be a Cubs fan but every time I walk in that ball park to this day its like I was that little kid once again.
Great post script: When Grandma died about 10 years ago me and my mom took a scoop of her ashes and placed them in a plastic bag with hopes of spreading them on the grass. The game had ended and you will find this hard to believe but mom and I had a lot to drink and almost lost our nerve. Mom got up and went to the first row by the dugout and as she went to open the bag it fell without a bit spread out. A Wrigley Security guard watching the field observed this and asked my Mom what she was doing. Mom explained as she was crying and without missing a beat the guard picked up the ashes, walked to the first base bag, said a silent prayer and spread the ashes all over the field. You want to know why I am a Cubs fan? That’s Why I am…
To this day everytime we go to a game we raise our beer’s toast old “B”

I agree.
Some men learn through what they read. Some men learn through what they're told. Some men have to piss on the railroad tracks. And some men keep on pissin'.
Bigger Question
When the Cubs finally win the World Series, how would you as a fan follow the team?
For me, I’m a Cubs fan because my dad is one and that’s how I grew up. But part of the myth and lore of being a Cubs fan is finally being able to say you saw them win the World Series. But what happens after that? Does Cubs fan-base get larger? Do fans finally get what they’ve waited for their whole life and not follow the team as hard?
To me, part of the reason I get excited for each new season is because I think this is the year. Honestly, if the Cubs won this October, by 2011 I don’t know if I could be as excited for “next year” as I have been in the past.
Anyone else ever think about this?
For one example of how people might act...

Agreed
I went to school in Massachusetts. I kid you not, it took them 10 minutes before making of the Cubs after they won the World Series. But I’ll give them credit, before they won their championship, their fans knew their team very well. They used to be very very dedicated fans who now take their team for granted (at least my friends do).
I could never...
I grew up with such a strong respect for the Cubs and the game from my grandpa, great uncle and dad. When the Cubs win I will raise a glass for all those I loved who couldn’t share the moment and continue to love and respect my team with just a little more pride.

Rooting for the Cubs is simply in my blood.
I’m a third generation Cubs fan, although I am the first member of my family to live in Chicago. I grew up two hours south of Chicago, and went to my first game at Wrigley in 1984 at the age of seven, and just fell in love with everything. The team, the ballpark, Ryne Sandberg and Jody Davis and Harry Caray and Steve Stone, the whole thing. And the Cubs were winning. Yes, my first experience with the Cubs was winning. When they lost the NLCS in 1984, my father was distraught, but I was naive and thought, “Well, surely they will win next year.” I found out the following year that not every team makes the playoffs every year, but I quickly became a WGN devotee. On a summer afternoon, it could be bright sunshine outside, but even my best friends quickly learned not to bother asking me to come outside or go to the pool until the Cubs game was over. They could come in and watch with me, of course, but otherwise, come back after about 4:00. I learned all of my baseball from three people: my father, Harry Caray, and Steve Stone.
I can’t really say why I became a fan, other than it was just in me. I was exposed to it, and I loved it from day one. The Cubs, and baseball in general, are a very important part of my life. It’s part of who I am. Every job I have ever had I am identified as the Cubs nut. People seek me out at work to get my reaction after a big win, a tough loss, or any big Cubs news. When the Cubs lost in the 2003 NLCS, I got phone calls from friends and family, former co-workers, and two ex-girlfriends, literally from all over the country, as if a family member had died. Some of the same in 2008, but nothing like ‘03. I guess it’s silly, but I pity people who do not have something in their life that they are passionate about. I love Lou Holtz’s quote, “Everyone needs something to love, someone to love, something to hope for, and something to believe in.” With the Cubs, I have all four. (Fortunately, I also have someone to love, and she tolerates my Cubs addiction with a sense of wonder and bewilderment. And I love her for it.)
"Don't complain to me about the stormy weather, boys. Just bring the ship into port." --Steve Stone, September 2004
The entire question is wrong.
It is not a question of why one is a Cubs fan, but if you like baseball and grow up on the north side of town, how could you be anything but a Cubs fan. And once the seeds are sown, how could you not remain a Cubs fan. There is little or no choice involved. It is more a question of fate, than a question of will.

Because it's just part of who I am.
All 4 of my Grandparents are/were Cubs fans, so it’s in my blood. Listening to my Grandpa’s stories of the Cubs from their younger years while listening to Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau on WGN (no cable in central IL when I was a kid). Even earlier in my life, listening to the rise and fall of the Cubs of ‘69 in utero (or so I like to think I did anyway), and thankfully being born just after the Mets won the WS so I didn’t have to see it. Because watching the Sunday afternoon Cub game with my Dad, usually the only game I’d get to see live every week, is still one of my favorite things from my childhood. Even now, every time I go to Wrigley Field and walk out and see the grass and dirt and the scoreboard shining in the sun it’s just like the first time I saw it when I was a kid and that feeling NEVER gets old or goes away. I may root for other teams as well, but they’re still my first love and always will be whether I’m 40 or 400. And because no matter how bad they’ve been, and they’ve been really bad at times in my life, you just do not jump ship. I was born a die hard Cub fan, I was raised a die hard Cub fan, and I’ll die a die hard Cub fan—as my father and his father before him. I just hope I see a few more championships than they have.
Family
My Grandmother got me hooked young. The woman would NOT miss a game, didn’t matter how late at night, how many extra innings or where she was! She even made my brother-in-law drive her home one day because “you people aren’t watching the Cubs game and I want to watch – take Grandma home!”
chris
My dad grew up following the Cubs because they were the closest team
No team in Milwaukee at the time. So that’s what was on TV when I was a kid.
Thank God. Otherwise, I could have ended up a bitter, militant, xenophobic Brewers fan. Not that they are all like that, just a VERY vocal minority.

I becam a Cubs fan during that magical 2003 season.
I became a Cub fan when I experienced both joy and heartbreak during 2003. I think I continue to be a fan because I’m still searching for that ultimate feeling of elation when the finally win the WS. What happens after that? Man, I’d like to find out.
Hey, it's a new century!

We all would.
Think about this. You have been a Cubs fan for seven years. I’ve had this in my heart & soul for 46 years.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
We gear up for another one.
I don’t root for the Cubs because they haven’t won in forever. I root because they are my baseball team. After they win a WS, the next goal is catching the Cardinals and winning more championships than they have. THATS when I will be satisfied.
To eliminate exclusion, we cut out the differences to feel like we belong.
Not catching the Yankees?
I want the Cubs to win every year. Not just that elusive one.

Same reason...
…I am an avid Blackhawks fan – the team and sport captured my heart when I was very young.

My grandparents.
They enrolled me in the Iowa Cubs Knothole Gang when i was a kid, and afternoons spent at their house were with my grandfather, who tuned in to WGN to see the “Big Cubs”.
- I was born in 1984.
- I faintly remember Sec Taylor opening in Des Moines in April 1992.
- I went to many games during the 1993 American Association title run with Grandpa.
- I had a Mark Grace baseball card that i kept in the front of my collection, even though it was of little worth compared to some others i owned.
- 1998 (i was 14) was the first time i really nerded out to baseball beyond my family’s influence, as i cheered on Sammy in the home run race and watched the “Big Cubs” make the playoffs.
- I remember being horrified in 2003 as i watched the game in my college dorm with some buddies from Chicago (everyone at the University of Iowa is from Chicago).
- I was home from college and got to be there in June of 2005 when a crowd of 13,000 plus watched Kerry Wood in a rehab assignment start and a post-game fireworks show.
- I moved to Chicago days after graduating college, and got to see my first game at Wrigley only a week later, a 2-1 win over the Astros. Z pitched. I was hooked, and have invested a good deal of my expendable time and money on the team since.
To tie it all together, i was lucky to get four great tickets from my employer to a game the last time my father and grandparents were in town. Grandpa had never been to Wrigley after rooting for the team for all of those years. He could barely make the stairs, and you could tell the day really exhausted him, but it was worth it. Fun times.

In the summer of '84, I was 23 years old
and back in those days, once in a blue moon, AFN Munich would broadcast a Cubs game. It used to make feel just a tiny little bit homesick.
First visit to Wrigley was 1968 (I think), which means I would have been 7½ years old at the time. I remember with a high level of certainty that it was a double header and very warm. I am also fairly sure the Cubs swept the DH. But sadly I am vague about against who. The Cardinals? The Reds? I wasn’t there with my parents but with friends of the family. My parents were “too european” (they moved to the States from Europe as adults), never really understood the attraction of the game, and never went to Wrigley Field.
I do remember filling in results during 1969 season on a Cubs schedule pinned to the wall, and getting excited, like children do. At the time, my hopes were dashed, and I was terribly disappointed. However the significance, depth and width of the tragedy of 1969 was beyond me at the time.
And, of course, always, there was Channel 9 on an ancient B/W TV, not to mention 720kHz on the AM dial of the wonderful tube receiver in my room.

The Cubs swept five doubleheaders in 1968.
One each against the Astros, Dodgers and Giants, and two against the Pirates — on consecutive days, July 6 and 7.
Here’s the Cubs’ day by day game log from 1968 — maybe you can figure it out.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
From going through the box scores, my analysis suggests that
you were attending this doubleheader against the Braves on August 21. The Cubs won both halves (5-4 and 13-5) and the game time temperature was 90F.

The DH with the Braves seems most likely to be correct
even though I do have this association with (but not real memory of) something red for the visiting team.

Unless it wasn't 1968 that you went to this DH.

everything started..
in my little town Navojoa, Sonora Mexico.. home of the great pitcher Fernando Valenzuela, in 1985 when i was 6 years old.. every day when i got home from school i turned on TV and then the magic showed.. 12:30 pm (local time) WGN TV was there in channel 8.. “JUMP” the Van Halen hit makes the intro every broadcasting game.. and that was my first love sight to CUBS team.
I can't listen to that song without thinking of the Cubs.....
do you know what ever happened to Valenzuela…..he was the first really big (as in large) pitcher I ever saw…..he amazed me.

I'm still bitter....
that they only sometimes play “Jump” at Wrigley as the Cubs take the field just before game time. That used to be the song that they played not only on WGN every day, but the Cubs took the field at the ballpark to that song every day until a few years ago, when the marketing department apparently felt like they had to get more cool and hip and modern. Hello, we’re playing in freaking Wrigley Field!!! Screw cool, hip, and modern, and bring back Van Halen as the “take the field” song, dammit!! Not once in a while, every day! That IS the Cubs’ song.
"Don't complain to me about the stormy weather, boys. Just bring the ship into port." --Steve Stone, September 2004
they should bring it back when Sandberg becomes the manager....
I heard they got rid of it cuz they either didnt want to pay the royalties….or Van Halen didnt want it used cuz he was not a Cub fan. Your explaination sounds more reasonable.

I really don't know.
Van Halen not wanting it used doesn’t seem likely to me, because number one, they did use it all those years, both on TV and at the ballpark, so I’m sure they needed permission to do so, and he likely gave it to them. I would never be surprised if anything the Cubs front office (or any front office) did came down to money, so the royalties issue is definitely a possibility. Who knows? Whatever the reason, I guess things change, but that song was a great tradition.

They have used a lot of different songs over the years
In 1989 – Wrigley Field’s 75th – it was “Back In Time” by Huey Lewis and the News.
Jump has been used on and off since then, not continually.

A lot of people talk about 2003 being their year
And all I have to say is I think we can all remember those 10-15 minutes we truly thought Cubs were going to the World Series. Granted, we all know what happened next BUT for those 15 minutes it was a magical feeling. I would obviously trade that in for a World Series victory but as a Cubs fan I’ve never felt that much excitement for my team before.
I never want to think about the final 5 outs but man, those are memories that make you a fan for life because one day, we’ll all hopefully relive even more excitement than that.
For me, the first thing I think of when I think of 2003
is Sammy’s 2-out, 2-run shot on to Waveland in the 9th to tie Game 1.
That’s probably the most excited I’ve ever been watching a Cubs game.

I started out as a Dodgers fan
I had always loved Wrigley Field but thought of the Cubs a s losers. My whole family were Dodgers fans. One day I no longer recognized the Dodgers roster and felt betrayed by them. We had just gotten cable and I discovered WGN. Ron Cey, Davey Lopes, Rick Sutcliffe, Jay Johnstone hey, I know these guys then some guy named Sandberg hit a game winning HR.
Listening to Harry & Steve on a daily basisand the playofff run got me hooked, couple of years later I had a car and and some money and became a fixture at spring training. Caught the Cubs when I could as visitors in Arizona, Colorado and LA it was something stepping back into Dodger Stadium cheering for the visitors after starting out on their band wagon. Finally got to Wrigley in 2007 and felt like Moses entering the Promised Land. I have been to Wrigley 5 times now and got to sing Go Cubs Go on 3 of them.
Where to begin!
I was born in 1976 and based on my name a Phillies fan growing up. I was 4 years old when the Phillies won 1980. I wanted to repeat Pete Rose bowling over Bruce Bocce in Game 4 with my grandfather after that game. I was at that parade after the world series, in an office building with my aunts above Broad Street.
I became a Cubs fan after Dallas Green came to the Cubs from the Phillies. Brought a lot of ex Phillies to the Cubs. My favorite ex Phillies was Larry Bowa and the Cubs got some guy that couldn’t beat out Schmidt at 3B (Ryne Sandberg). My dad and I started following the Cubs because of all the ex Phillies. I’ve stuck with them!! I remember in 1984 how many Cubs fans were at the Vet in September 1984 for the Cubs-Phillies series that year. To this day, people from Philadelphia hate the Cubs because of how many Cubs fans showed up at the Vet for that series. People from Philadelphia have long memories.
It’s been tough, especiallly after what the Phillies have done that past few years. But I know someday my faith will be rewarded!
i too was born in 1976
does that make us brothers :=)
