Crap, Hill will probably be awesome after some of Duncan's dark magic.

The Cardinals generally do better with our castoffs...

…than we do with theirs. I don’t see that happening this time.

And the eighth and final rule: if this is your first time at Fight Club, you have to fight.

Duncan can fix arms.

Not always.

Gary Gaetti and Jim Edmonds both helped us make the playoffs in ’98 and ’08. Granted, from Ernie Broglio to Aaron Miles, there were quite a few that went the other way.

I know he wasn't the greatest pitcher

but Marquis was a serviceable 5th starter while he was here.

So who do we get in '18 to continue the trend?

I would not doubt if Hill became an effective starter

With Duncan, I could see him improving greatly. Hill is the perfect case of a pitcher with great stuff who just has a couple things you need to tweek.

Start Sean Marshall!!

Disagree.

OMG, that's it!

I can’t believe I didn’t see this angle. Look for Hill to hit 25 dingers this season and gun down 20 runners from right field platooning with Ryan Ludwick.

BOOK IT!

Really?

Are you saying his control problems had nothing to do with his torn labrum?

Not even Dave Duncan can resurrect a one pitch pitcher

I won’t lose sleep about this signing. More than likely the Cards just acquired Triple A roster filler.

I agree with most here

Second I read that I got a gut feeling that this will blow up in the Cubs face…

Rich Hill will be 30 in March.

I doubt it.

Rich Hill used to be the oldest...

… young pitching prospect in the Cubs system.

Rich Hill was often compared to Barry Zito. Hill is only two years younger than Zito.

Pitchers can't pitch when they're 30?

I’ll be sure to let like 50% of major league pitchers know that.

Sure, but...

… most pitchers who are any good have made an impact by the time they’re 30.

Rich Hill had one good season, and that was three years ago.

by Al Yellon on Jan 27, 2010 7:24 AM CST up reply actions

So, you're saying that, if healthy,

there’s no way in hell he could even be a 5th starter for the Cardinals behind Carpenter, Wainwright, Penny, and Lohse.

They aren’t looking for a top end guy. Just a 5th starter and since he’s only signed to a minor league contract, it’s pretty much a no-lose acquisition for the Cardinals.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

by Tackle Box on Jan 27, 2010 7:28 AM CST up reply actions

I suppose.

I just think Hill has more issues than whatever was wrong with his arm last year.

by Al Yellon on Jan 27, 2010 8:10 AM CST up reply actions

Some might think the labrum was a problem further back than just last year.

Kerry Wood had problems with velo and such for years. Same with Prior (who I know is no favorite around here) before an actual injury was found.

Nevertheless, who knows about Hill. He very well could be Mark Prior and prove to be worthless. But, I tend to think Hill has a little more internal desire (pride….gumption….whatever you want to call it) than Prior does, so maybe he gets it back on track now that (if…) he’s healthy.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

All I'm saying is

If he wasn’t signing in the NL Central I’d feel different…

Parisi

Payback?

Cards are thin at SP options, which might be one of the reasons Hendry drafted Parisi to begin with,

not exactly

after carpenter, wainwright, lohse, and penny, they have garcia, hawksworth, boggs, mcclellan, walters, ottavino and jukich on the 40 man. all have a chance to be the fifth starter or spot start this season. beyond that they also have options such as maclane, mortensen, and now hill.

a few possible high upside guys and a bunch of probably league average or worse guys. not an incredibly deep list of talent, but options nonetheless.

garcia, hawksworth, boggs, mcclellan, walters, ottavino, jukich, maclane, motensen...

And don’t forget maybe Ryan Franklin can re-invent himself as a starter.

With all those options I can see why they would sign Hill.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh man this is great. Thanks for making the division that much more winnable for us.

Mechanics are one thing, but Hill has issues in his head. I don’t think you’re going to see Duncan be able to fix that

They didn't put him on the major league roster or install him as their #1 starter

I don’t think this affected our ability to win the division in any significant way.

by madcow256 on Jan 27, 2010 8:24 AM CST up reply actions

If he is in their rotation

Then they did help us

Except, he's not

If he is, that would probably be because he had been playing well enough to earn the spot. I don’t think they’re going to try to force it just to try to stick it to the Cubs.

by madcow256 on Jan 27, 2010 8:43 AM CST up reply actions

Exactly

as a Cub fan, you really don’t want to see him in the Cardinal rotation because that means he’s fixed whatever ailed him.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

by Tackle Box on Jan 27, 2010 8:58 AM CST up reply actions

I don't think they'd force it

But stupid baseball decisions have been made and the Cardinals are not an exception. It’s possible. I don’t know what the Cardinals have as far as depth
