Just out of curiousity-

did anyone ever fail one of these physicals thus ending a deal?

Wasn’t the recent Mike Lowell deal to Texas called off recently because he didn’t pass the physical? I know there have been others, but can’t think of them off the top of my head.

Not sure about a Free Agent Signing

But on the trade side, Mike Lowell did this off-season. Failed physical and that killed his trade from Boston to Texas.

Sheets failed a physical

There have been a smattering of failed physicals over the years, but typically teams get a fair amount of medical information before drawing up the documents if there was some sort of question about the player’s health.

In basketball last year

Tyson Chandler was supposed to be traded and his toe injury made him fail a physical and the deal was cancelled

Since Byrd and Silva didn't get press conferences

I wonder if Nady will get one. I know none of them were considered huge signings but anyone know why they didn’t get formally introduced as Cubs?

IMO, he’s the guy on the team who you’d want to take and hang out at a bar with. Seems to have a very good head on his shoulders.

Not that I mind the Nady signing per se,...

but when you consider that the Cubs have effectively spent up to $9 million dollars this offseason for a middling platoon, I can’t say I’m all that impressed. Especially as it comes after spending roughly the same each of the last two seasons to get some real production out of right field.

by Damen Jackson on Jan 29, 2010 12:21 PM CST reply actions

Which didn't happen.

I think the two players acquired, plus Fukudome not having to face LHP, will provide more production than the 2009 inhabitants of those two positions.

by Al Yellon on Jan 29, 2010 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

What didn't happen?

That he hasn’t spent 10 million a year to fix his right field problem for the last few years, or that the production has been — and likely will continue to be — no better than league average?

by Damen Jackson on Jan 29, 2010 12:25 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree that the production will not be better than league average.

The Cubs will get better production out of both RF and CF in 2010 than they did in 2009.

That's not really the point...

You can put out a sleeker and sexier Yugo, but at the end of the day, it’s still a Yugo.

The question that I think needs to be asked is how much better, and whether the Cubs could have been better assured of that production by looking elsewhere. And that’s certainly debatable.

by Damen Jackson on Jan 29, 2010 12:31 PM CST up reply actions

you’ve asserted that RF production will be that of a “middling” platoon. Al disagrees. Then you say "that’s not really the point.

First...

I didn’t ask for you to broker our dialogue. Second, if Al cares to disagree, it’s fine with me, but it’s certainly debatable.

My question was will the center field/right field situation be so much better that the cost of up to $9 million bucks was justified.

of course, that's not saying a whole lot

considering how holy crap goddamn awful our outfield production was last year.

With Soriano healthy and at a pre-2009 level, we have one power bat in the outfield, when two is preferred for contenders. So I somewhat agree with Damen, even if he’s not getting his point across to well.

The fact of the matter is, we’re on the hook for a lot of money, with some pretty average to slightly above average production to show for it.

I guess I'm just a worrier, that's why my friends call me whiskers

But it comes off the books next year and/or the year after that, so...

Look out NL central— the Cubs are gonna have a chance at winning the division in 2012. Or not. Maybe the Cubs’ll make a run in 2017 when the outfield will be perfect and it won’t have to be paid for with “a lot of” Nunyabidness’s money. I can’t wait until the season where a few weeks before training camp the Cubs have no issues.

Down year of Bradley . IMO production from Fukudome and Nady will surpass the production of Bradley last year . Gotta think it’s going to be better than league average though .. by N Oakley on Jan 29, 2010 2:31 PM CST up reply actions

I know there's nothing really new to say about Nady

but did we really need to go back to complaining about Milton Bradley?

That said – Nady’s more than a platoon partner for Dome. He’s the 4th OF upgrade a team like ours needed – one where none of our starting OFs should play 155 games. We’ll see Nady playing for both corner OFs, and possibly a little Nady in RF and Dome in CF.

by DGU on Jan 29, 2010 4:14 PM CST up reply actions

DGU, you are correct

Nady is more than a platoon or even 4th OF’er, he is an offensive upgrade for Johnson, yes an effort fan favorite player, but a player on the margins, Nady offers more ‘pop’ off the bench, real insurance for Soriano but also allows flexibility because Fukudome offers flexibility in 2 positions, so now there are 3 OF’ers who can play more than 1 OF position as a starter (occasional).

Now we need another bench player who can hit and play both IF and OF… okay you guys said Izturis is dead, how about Doumit? We need something that can do a DeRosa, corner IF/OF is good but how do you hide 4 middle infielders w/12 pitchers unless you have someone who can do more.

Xavier Nady is quietly being looked upon as insurance against the Guess Hitting Hack falling off the face of the cliff moreso than a platoon mate for Kosuke Fukudome.

The contract details tell the real story of what Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella are thinking on this one. Nady can make a lot of money with the Cubs, and I bet that Hendry and Piniella think he just might.

So, yeah, if healthy, Nady could certainly take over left field, if necessary . I’d have to think Soriano would have to be pretty God awful for a long period of time for that to happen, though.

Clean slate - but I wouldn't be surprised to see him need 30 games off in 2010

Between that and 40-50 games as the RH hitter in RF, Nady will get some serious time even without signficant injuries.

by ClarkFan on Jan 29, 2010 8:44 PM CST up reply actions

Didn't Piniella just say at the Cubs Convention that Byrd would hit fifth?

Maybe instead of stockpiling second basemen we’re going to stockpile No. 5 hitters.

Yeah, he did say that.

I found the quote above from Hendry a little odd. For starters, he really shouldn’t even imply that Nady could be an everyday guy when there’s already everyday guys at all three positions he plays (LF, RF and 1B). Secondly, he probably shouldn’t be projecting the batting order over Lou either.

perhaps he was thinking

ok, when Dome is sitting against lefties, and Riot bats first, everyone else moves up a notch and Nady bats fifth.

Maybe?

Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

Well...

we are throwing out the Maybe’s…

Maybe it was meant as some offhand motivation for the proposed starting 3 outfielders. A little competition is always good….

Yeah, there's that.

Or maybe he was just really excited about the Nady deal going through and couldn’t help himself.

I’m not all that upset about the quote. I just found it curious given how careful he usually is about stuff like that.

Everyday.... TYPE.

Type doesn’t just modify “five-hole”. Hendry’s saying that he’s added a 4th OF who is an every-day type of player, as in, "our bench now has a guy who is capable of playing every day and hitting in the middle of the order if necessary.

Amen brother

Genius Jim lives under the delusion that the Cubs play in a local beer league. His understanding of the value of defense has always been horrificly bad. This is the same genius General Manager whose minor league system produced a procession of guess hitting hack DHs….Brandon Sing, Jason Dubois, Brian Dopirak. Heck, even Jake Fox and Micah Hoffpauir are DH types.

Jermaine Dye is all used up. And he has gone from a good outfielder to a very very lousy one.

One seems more “honorable”. Either way, though, Nady is a better fit. I think.

Supposedly the same thing happened with Gil Meche

Hendry made same offer to Lilly & Meche ( though he might have signed both) but Meche wanted more time to think it over.
Meche did get more money but he has not played for a competative team. I trust he will enjoy the extra 15 million he got.
Worked out VERY well for the Cubs.
