2010 Cubs By The Numbers Update
Thanks to everyone who ordered a copy of "Cubs By The Numbers" directly from me for $10, with $1 from every book purchased going to Haiti earthquake relief. In addition to the books purchased, a couple of buyers gave me extra money to donate and I'll throw in some of my own. By suggestion from one of the buyers, our donation will go to Doctors Without Borders, one of the best-run organizations now giving needed assistance in Haiti.
I still have books left so if you'd like one for $10, email me using the link on the left sidebar for details. I hope to get the donation out by the end of this week, so if you'd like to participate, order now!
This post is not just for the book; after the jump I have some updated information on some uniform number changes for 2010.
Xavier Nady, who wore #22 for the Pirates, will be taking over #22 this season. Tom Gorzelanny, who wore #22 last season, will switch to #32, and John Gaub, who had been assigned #32, will instead wear #48. Still to be determined is a number for non-roster invitee Chad Tracy; I'll post it and update the BCB 2010 Cubs spring training numerical roster (which is always on the left sidebar) when I get the info.
If you're wondering why Marlon Byrd, who wore #22 for the Rangers last year, didn't have first call for that number before Nady, Byrd apparently specifically requested #24.

I'm guessing....
..since Tracy wore 18, he’ll either go up to 19 or steal Quade’s #8 or combine his #18 to take #9.
Yeah, I’m a number geek and I need to order that book. :)

I just ordered one through Amazon, Al.
(I gave to Haiti relief a couple of weeks ago….)

Wow, I'm braindead.
Forgot who wore #18 for the Cubs.
Now I remember!
Can baseball season start already?
Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

And #19 is available.
Chances Chad Tracy takes 19 if he makes the Cubs?

Byrd has some big shoes to fill with #24

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Hoffpauir already has had to fill big shoes.
Those of the immortal Todd Hundley.

Hoffpauir and Todd Hundley didn't wear the same number.

Oops.
I saw “Todd Hundley #6 C” online and thought he did.
My bad.

Yes he did
He started out with #99, then when Damon Bufird was traded in 2001, he took the #9 that Buford previously wore.

I'm hopeless
I’m wondering who will wear #74 and #63 in Spring games. Really want to see guys I’ve ollowed in Josh’s updates, but have never heard their name pronounced.
“Batting next, #67, Marquez Smith.”
For right now,
they have James Adduci listed as #63. No one has #74 as far as I know. Justin Berg is #64, the highest number on the active roster.

I'm looking for the guys who will be in Tennessee
or even Daytona this season. Hoping to see Jay Jackson get in a cheap inning on WGN this spring.
Some of the guys they use in those "B" spring training games are pretty obscure
“Now batting, number 83, uh… um… number 83, would you kindly call the press box and tell us your name?”

Spring training story.
The Cubs once had an infielder named Greg Smith, who played briefly in 1989 and 1990 and was in the system for several years.
One spring training — must have been 1989 or 1990 — there was a game that was running long, IIRC into extra innings, and they needed another infielder. They located Smith — he was sitting in the stands behind one of the dugouts, having finished his minor league game. He quickly dressed — I can’t even remember what number he wore — and played a couple of innings.

And for our next at-bat, we'll need a volunteer from the audience...

I will wear #2 this year, just FYI.
