Scott Eyre Announces Retirement
Former Cubs reliever is done at age 37. He got a ring, though, after Lou got him dumped off the 2008 roster.

Went out on top.....
….Glad he got a WS ring.
Very interesting comments about the Phillies clubhouse / atmosphere. I would say that back to back WS appearances are a pretty strong indicator that a good clubhouse is critical to success.
Phillies’ clubhouse is great. That’s one of the reasons why Cliff [Lee] didn’t want to leave. It’s one of the best clubhouses you could be in. I don’t care what anybody says about theirs. I’ve been in a few of them. This is one of the best. I never once said, ‘I don’t want to go to the field today."
The irony of course
is that Eyre was devastated when the Cubs cut him. He loved the clubhouse in Chicago as well. He got the ring and two trips to the WS after Lou had him cut and it honestly could not happen to a nicer guy.

Good guy, never caused trouble
Loved his delivery style. Glad he’s ending it on his terms, not because of injuries, etc

He had a pretty nice career
2006 he was phenominal with the Cubs; pity those efforts were wasted and that Dusty’s overuse of him ultimately led to his demise
Wrigley Bound in the Summer of 2010
It led to his bad stretch that got him in Lou's doghouse
Clearly he had more left in the tank at that point though, so I would say Lou led to the demise of Eyre’s Cubs career.
LMAO
Dusty Baker managed Scott Eyre for one year, 2006, and Eyre threw fewer innings and made fewer appearances than he had the year before.
Good guy.
He was the RV dude, right? Took Shark and Cotts or somebody to AZ for spring training? Glad he got his ring.

because there were several posts about it
it was pretty cool. As was his beard.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

RV dude in Des Moines was the late Rod Beck
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
I believe Scott Eyre traveled to ST in a RV
and I remember about Beck in Iowa with the RV.

Yes Scott had an
RV and traveled to ST in it. CSN did a segment on him and his RV.

Both of us are correct, Mike.
Scott traveled to AZ his last year as a Cub in an RV. And Rod Beck also used an RV.

SHOOTER R.I.P.
Rod Beck one of a kind . The sport is much better because of the Shooter . He loved the game and the fans .
he was a throw back type of player

Congrats to Eyre on a nice career
glad he got a ring, sadly it has a P not a C on it

when the Cubs were playing the Twins at the Metrodome, I was standing along the 3rd baseline watching the bullpen pitchers play long toss before the game. The bullpen area was pretty messy with sunflower seeds and other items and Scott Eyre walks up to me and my brother and says, “I’ll just get my little brother to clean this all up.” His little brother, Willie, was on the Twins at the time.
Anyway, that was the first and only time I have ever talked with a Cubs player and will always be a good memory for me. Long story short, Scott seemed like a good guy and had a good major league career. Hope him nothing but the best in what ever he does next!

Good guy, good career
Rumor floating around is that Eyre is retiring in large part because his arm has been killing him the last two years. At some point you get sick of the pain and very weary of surgical procedure and rehabilitation if that can even be an option.

where is this rumor from?

Sandy Alderson told him.

He happens to be right.
And so are you (about respect). Here’s the link and Eyre’s comments about being hurt:
“I do understand Ruben’s point of view,” he said. “I’ll be 38 in May. I’ve pitched in a lot of games. I’ve had elbow issues. I had the surgery to get it fixed, but nobody really knows if it’s going to work or not. I can’t guarantee it’s going to feel great when I’m snapping off sliders. So I really do understand why he held back. He’s trying to protect the organization in case I get hurt. It made the decision a little easier, but I don’t think it would have swayed it.”

To me, that quote and a few others in that article...
…really say it all about Scott Eyre. He seems like a really good-hearted, friendly, down-to-earth guy who loves the game and “gets it” on several levels. I wish he’d been able to stick with the Cubs a little longer, but things certainly worked out well for him in Philly.

Good story.
Seems like a guy that wouldn’t retire unless he had to, ya know?

Good for Scott.
Now he can spend lots of time with his kids and wife.

Good luck to Scott in your retirement!
The big winners are his boys who get their Dad full time!
Hey, it's a new century!
