The First Hints To The 2010 Cubs' National TV Dates

Where will it land?

A quick perusal of the 2010 Cubs sortable schedule today provided some clues as to when they will be on Fox (Saturdays) and ESPN (Sunday nights). Follow me past the jump for the dates.

Star-divide

Based on game times listed on the schedule, the following Saturday games will be on Fox, game time 3:10 pm CDT:

Saturday, May 29, vs. Cardinals Saturday, June 12, vs. White Sox Saturday, July 10, at Dodgers Saturday, August 21, vs. Braves Saturday, September 4, vs. Mets

Each team is allowed a maximum of eight appearances on Fox Saturday games -- the following are listed as "TBD" and some of them will probably wind up as Fox games:

Saturday, May 22, at Rangers Saturday, June 26, at White Sox Saturday, July 31, at Rockies Saturday, August 14, at Cardinals Saturday, September 25, at Cardinals

It'll probably be the White Sox and Cardinals games -- the Rockies and Rangers have NO starting times listed yet.

The following Sunday games are already listed with evening start times, meaning they'll be on ESPN:

Sunday, July 11, at Dodgers Sunday, July 18, vs. Phillies

The July 18 game has a 5:05 starting time -- that's the Sunday ESPN does the ESPY awards, so whatever game is on that night has to start two hours earlier than usual. That'll make for some interesting right field shadows.

The following Sunday games are listed as "TBD" -- each team can appear five times max on Sunday night, so since the Cubs are a pretty good draw for ESPN, probably three of these will wind up as night games:

Sunday, May 23, at Rangers Sunday, June 13, vs. White Sox Sunday, June 20, vs. Angels Sunday, June 27, at White Sox Sunday, July 25, vs. Cardinals Sunday, August 1, at Rockies Sunday, August 22, vs. Braves Sunday, September 25, vs. Cardinals

You can probably eliminate the Rockies and Rangers again, as they have no starting times listed at all; Cardinals and White Sox Sunday dates with the Cubs have been good draws for ESPN in the past. That 9/25 date is the last regular season home game. One good thing about the 2010 night game schedule: there are only two home night games in April (vs. the Nationals on April 26 and 27), minimizing the time the team will have to contend with cold nighttime weather early in the season. The next night game after the two vs. the Nats is on May 10 vs. the Marlins. I've updated the BCB tentative 2010 Cubs schedule with all these times; it can be found permanently on the left sidebar.

Sunday Night Baseball sounds really good right now!

It’s 2 degrees in Iowa with wind chills approaching -30. We have snow like you can’t believe. I guess it’s probably that cold in Chicago. I can’t wait for baseball and warm weather. We have 2 more months of winter, I’ll be a a spring training game in 2 months and 4 days. I hope it’s 90 in Phoenix that day. Sunday night baseball sounds really good right now.

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

Yes, cars start.

At least mine do. It’s 7 here now. The weathermen all said it was going to be so bad today and all the wind. It’s hardly blowing! I lie andyp111’s idea of batting averages under the weatherman’s name. It’s cold and all, but nothing like they said it was going to be.

There's a reason they tend to the bad side on a forecast.

If they say it’s going to be bad, and it isn’t, you’re pleasantly surprised. If they say it’s going to be nothing and you get buried in snow or drenched in rain, you’ll be furious.

Up here in Fairbanks

we all have blue cords spouting from our grills and we are legally obligated to plug in the car whenever it’s below 20F … there are outlets everywhere, in parking lots, on the front of houses, everywhere. Highly recommend heated seats, too ;-)

I think that weathermen

should have a batting average under thier names. Except this is a correct weather guess average. That way you know if he says it is a 60 percent chance of rain you can tell everyone that he only has a 20 percent chance of being right

That's Really Warm

No joke! It’s only 16 degrees down here in Memphis. We don’t have to put with 5" of snow. We only got about half an inch here. Of course, that’s enough to drive people down here to madness with the closing of school and church activities. What little ice and snow there is on the streets is only in certain patches. People down here don’t know how to drive on clear 80 degree days with no rain, snow, or ice on the streets.

Yep. And add the lake effect snow in SW Michigan where I was living

and it was a freaking water winter wonderland (which was Michigan’s license plate slogan back then).

Well, the “Water Winter Wonderland” part anyway…

As I remember, we had a snow drift in the back year that drifted up onto the roof of our house. You could actually get on the roof and slide down it like a ski jump in the olympics…

We dug into that drift and created a maze of connected tunnels that would have made the Vietcong proud…

we had one in the late 70's in Ohio (1977 I think)

Close to 2 feet of snow, lots of drifting, and some strategic shoveling left us with about a 4 foot high ledge of really really packed snow right next to the basketball hoop.

Our driveway was the hot spot in the neighborhood as we had about a two-week long Slam Dunk contest. It was Spud-tacular!!!!

Rely on The Weather Channel for accurate reporting/forecasts

The NWS errors on the side of the extreme. The Weather Channel is VERY accurate.
In rain-started CA, when they predict rain — it actually does. The NWS has been wrong most of this winter predicting rain here, but not TWC.

It was 75 and sunny when I left for work at noon, FYI.

I believe at some point in the year

the Rangers stop playing home day games, its just too damn hot down here in Texas. It may not start until later in the summer though (the Cubs come in May). At that point, even their Sunday home games are played at night, but are not necessarily shown on ESPN. I guess MLB gave them some sort of waiver to because of the weather conditions.

I can barely contain my enthusiasm (sarcasm alert), at having the possibility of so many games being on Fox. I rank that right up there with the crosstown games where I have to listen to Hawk call the Cubs games.

Another thing FOX should do is shift audiences away from blowouts.

I remember last year, the Cubs and Cardinals were playing a tight game at Wrigley Field in April, while the Indians were routing the Yankees in New York (I believe the score was 20-2, or something like that).

And yet, my local FOX station never changed the game. It just kept showing Indians and Yankees until that game ended. By which time, of course, Cubs-Cardinals had also ended.

Bad Selig needs to start shifting audiences off the “Game of the Week” on FOX.
