I'm still a little surprised...
…it was only 3 mil per year for a WS winning manager in NY.

I suppose it might have been more if they had won it again this year.

he has little leverage right now
if there was an opening that Girardi could realistically go to, he might’ve been able to squeeze a bit more. That said, with Alderson’s hiring in the Mets, you can effectively cross off any semi-big name manager unless someone is willing to go there for less than expected. add in that Hal doesn’t want the manager’s salary to skyrocket like it did under his dad, and that’s probably why it is only 3 million.
Assuming the official announcement does indeed come later today...
…isn’t this in violation of MLB’s supposed moratorium on big announcements during the World Series? Or is this not considered ‘big’…

Aha.... It is. Looks like they have to kiss Bud's ring before making the announcement
From the article:
The Yankees need Major League Baseball’s permission to formally announce the deal on Thursday, since Game 2 of the World Series is set to be played at 8 p.m. ET. The team could choose to wait until Friday, which is an off-day for the Giants and Rangers.

Don't think so
Does extending someone really count as a big announcement. Not like there will be a big presser on this.
But here's the real shocker.
In the next paragraph, I see this (my bold):
Cashman announced on Monday that pitching coach Dave Eiland will not return in 2011, but the other five members of Girardi’s 2011 staff – hitting coach Kevin Long, first-base coach Mick Kelleher, third-base coach Rob Thomson, bench coach Tony Pena and bullpen coach Mike Harkey – are expected to return.
Is that the beloved ex-Cub Mike Harkey?

"MLB’s supposed moratorium"
does not apply to the almighty Yankees.

The Yankees can put a moratorium on the World Series
so it doesn’t interfere with their announcement schedule
if only Jim
would have held out – we could have gotten him
congrats Yankees, you got a decent manager for a decent price – now here is to you sucking for many many many years
So?
I’m still not sold on Girardi as some great manager. Nearly every manager would have won with the Yankees last year. They signed the two top free agents. They stayed healthy overall. How much managing was there really?
John Grabow: $4.8 million in 2011.
sorry
forgot the /sarcasm
I am in the same boat as you – with the yankees payroll 2010 Lou should be able to win a WS
Girardi didn't want the Cubs job...
According to the source in the above article from ESPN, Girardi “told Cashman back in August that he had no interest in the Cubs job.” So there you go…
Get 'em on, Get 'em over, Get 'em in!

Linky…
Get 'em on, Get 'em over, Get 'em in!
You put your link in the title of your comment....
… that makes it unclickable. Here, I made it clickable.

Not sure I believe that...
…and even if he didn’t have interest, why would Girardi be stupid enough to take that leverage away when he was in a contract year?
I don’t think he is that stupid.

does this mean we can stop talking about him managing the Cubs?

Well, at least for a little while - but I leave you with this little nugget...
Mike Quade deal: 2 years + option = 3 years, i.e. thru the 2013 season…
Joe Girardi reported deal: 3 years = 3 years, i.e. thru the 2013 season…
Coincidence? I think not…
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

that's pretty funny if you're taking my comment seriously
but if you are, then my response would be something along the lines of…
“no more than you have in the past on other issues.”
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Let me reach farther
none of that matter. We’ll all goners on December 21, 2012.

Nope.
That was debunked a week ago. We’re all going to be around at least 50 more years.
