Name This Cub
It's been a pretty slow weekend for Cubs news, so let's play "Name That Cub." No clues here; even the uniform won't really give it away, since it's the same uniform the Cubs still wear as we enter 2011. This Cubs pitcher -- OK, so it's obvious he's a pitcher -- is pretty obscure.
No prizes for this -- just for fun.

I'd like to make a witty and/or nice comment here...
…but I literally have no idea who that guy is. Looks like an early 1990s shot?

No one's right yet.
But there are a couple of clues in the comments. That’s all I’ll say.

Stil no winners.
I think I picked a good one today.

yes
I wouldn’t second this…I was thinking it was a Cubs homegrown product not a veteran on his last legs.
DINGDINGDING!
Winner.
It’s Bobby Ayala, who pitched in 13 games for the Cubs in September 1999. He threw decently and I thought he would be invited back for 2000, but he was let go before the season started as a free agent. Eventually he pitched again at Iowa in 2000, but that was his last year in pro ball.
This photo is from September 17, 1999, oddly enough, Ayala’s worst outing as a Cub; he gave up two runs and got only one out. The Cubs won anyway 6-5 in 10 innings.
There is only one player who played in that game who was active in 2010. See if you can guess without checking.

actually Andrews hit .254 for the Cubs in 1999, with a OPS of .866 in 76 plate appearances
his awful average was accumulated earlier that season with Montreal. No, I’m not trying to sell his baseball card

Best Games, EVER!
Just an idea….
How about we make a list some the best games of all-time? (Or maybe post WW2, or whenever)
Would be exciting to see and know some of the greastest games the Cubs have participated in. Why it was great, quotes from players involved if possible, etc…
I just think this would be an exciting look at the history of our beloved Cubs. Especially after this bummer of a season. Maybe it will jumpstart some excitement heading into 2011?
Just an idea…
Yeah, that's a thought.
I’ll see if I can think of some, or if anyone has any ideas, post ’em here.

89 game versus
houston…I was a wee little lad but I remember the Cubs coming back from a 7 or 9 run deficit late in the game…..

one of those games that really stuck in my head. Neither pitcher has wound up as great as everyone thought he would, but that was a great pitching duel.
Eamus Ursuli!
Opening Day 1969. Willie Smith home run to win it.

I take you seriously.
That’s probably the single most important game in franchise history.
I’ll make a list of these. More choices, please.

My personal favorite
9/12/1998
Cubs 15 Brewers 12
Cubs needed every win this year to end in a tie with the Giants for the Wild Card. They got 5 in the ninth on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to win this one. Yeah Orlando Merced.
