Barrett Loux signs for $312K
....with the Rangers.
Would it have been impossible to sign this guy? Yes, he's an injury risk. But considering that we threw 20X this much money at Shark, I would have liked to have taken that risk.

Dissapointing
This is an oppurtunity the Cubs could have (and should have) jumped on. I understand he has has a sketchy injury history but 312k is chump change. Especially for 1st round caliber talent. I can’t think of a single reason they shouldn’t have signed this guy.

I don't remember what I said
But I’ll admit I was high. I think I said “Second round money” which would be between 400-700k.
So he got third round money. Sue me.

He might have wanted to stay in Texas
He went to Texas A&M, after all

Getting $312K
when you had originally been the 6th overall pick in the draft is a pretty big comedown.
I recall Josh trying to minimize the severity of Loux’s shoulder injury, but clearly the teams in MLB saw it differently. I suspect he took the $312K from Texas because it was the best/only offer out there.
Just what the Cubs needed
A pitcher starting out on the towel drills.
No way.

i thought the cubs
were going to start spending more on player development and the draft.
They are.
But not until the bathrooms in the minor league parks get spruced up.

So not signing this one player is proof they won't spend money on the draft or player development?
Um… ok.
The kid signed for 3rd round money. So plenty of other teams chose to pass, too.
I will agree that the signs regarding spending are, so far, mixed at best. If in 2011 the Cubs still underspend on the draft and player development… then the case can get louder.
Shut up Joe Morgan.
no need to go all hyperbolic
the cubs said they were going to spend more on player development. signing a first round talent that became a free agent for third round money would have been a good way to prove they were serious about doing that. it’s not like they couldn’t use some good PR about now.

But fsuapollo raised a valid question.
Why did so many other teams pass on Loux if he’s a “first round talent”?

just wait Al, soon there will be posts about how he got away and we dropped the ball

Wait... what?
You clearly inferred that the Ricketts were not holding up to their claim that they would spend on the draft and player development because they did not shell out to sign Loux.
Further, you have beaten the “Ricketts won’t spend any money” drum throughout a number of threads.
So I would hardly say me pointing out the flaw in this logic is hyperbolic.
If anything, suggesting the Cubs signing a FA for under a half million dollars would be “good PR” is the hyperbole. Outside of people who follow the draft, this signing wouldn’t register with the general fan base… at all.
Shut up Joe Morgan.
