One less opening for Sandberg. Also means Cora is probably staying put, I'd guess.

Hopefully Ryno gets offered the job that opened up when Listach left the Nats...

…if not, it appears Ryno will either have to head back to Iowa or head home.

Well, it looks like Ryno isn't going to Washington

Hmmm.

I was sure they’d hire Bob Melvin.

And this doesn’t mean that Ron Roenicke might not hire Sandberg as a coach.

Any connections between those two?

Not saying that Sandberg couldn’t head there without one. Just asking.

by elgato on Nov 2, 2010 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Nope.

Roenicke has been bench coach for the Angels since Joe Maddon left. Mostly with the Dodgers organization. The only place he and Sandberg really crossed paths was during the 1984 NLCS — Roenicke was on the Padres roster, but did not play in the series.

Melvin is the frontrunner

followed by Bobby V is leading the pack with some decision makers wanting Cora. Now someone tells the local beat writer that Roenicke was the top choice all along. The truth about the process that occurred behind closed doors will probably never be revealed, but so much for rumors.

yup

this one was a surprise. I know a lot of folks respect Roenicke, but this one somewhat came out of the blue, considering Attanasio’s desire to get the team competitive ASAP (at least, to my understanding, that’s what Attanasio wants, if I’m wrong, someone correct me).

Looks like Pirates want Hurdle

They could not interiew him till Rangers lost yesterday. Explaines their relative lack of activity lately.

Roenicke was one of the names I mentioned for the Cubs

After the success of Maddon and Black, it figured that someone would come calling for him. Glad to see more new blood over another retread.

Nothing against Roenicke...

But this one was a shock to me. It looked like Bobby Valentine might be going to the Brewers. It probably was an issue with money. The Brewers went with the cheaper guy although Roenicke comes from the Mike Scioscia coaching tree as did Joe Maddon and Bud Black.

I predict the Mets will hire Bob Melvin.

by jeffmills1972 on Nov 2, 2010 10:15 PM CDT reply actions

Three years/10 million was Bobby V’s reported asking price. Roenicke will probably get close to 2 million a year. Do you think that’s a big deal?

by ol Pete on Nov 3, 2010 10:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Mets

I wouldn’t be surprised if they went a bit more under the radar for their hire and went with a coach instead of an older, retread type like Melvin. Alderson prefers going with a cheaper manager to begin with, and it’s also a prime opportunity for them to retool things there and give a different guy a shot since most people feel like Alderson would need to take a step back with the Mets before building forward.

But who would that be?
