The Wrigley Field Marquee Is Red Again

If you were worried, it took all of three days -- the marquee was repainted red on Tuesday, November 23. Photo by Al Yellon, at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Click on photo to open a larger version in a new browser window

You didn't really think it was going to stay purple, did you?

If they wanted to be historically accurate, they should have repainted it blue.

I couldn't agree more.

This is a classic look and in Cubs colors.

What!

I’m shocked by you pro blue people. First of all, the blue (as it appears in that picture) looks run down. Second, red is a Cubs color too…ya know!

I grew up with it being red. I never knew it was anything but red, so to me, this is blasphemy.

Here's the thing.

It was blue when the Cubs were winning pennants in the 1930’s and 1940’s. You’re right that the blue looks kind of faded in those photos — but they could make it a better, brighter shade if they wanted.

I vote for blue. Sure, red is “a” Cubs color, but this site isn’t “Bleed Cubbie Red”, you know.

Ya I know.

Red pops and it’s what the mainstream meadia knows. It wouldn’t be smart to change it.

But most importantly (for me) it’s what I know. Red stays.

This might be a good poll question.

Agreed

I prefer the red — It’s all I know!

Although if they painted the park the way it is in Al’s pic, I’d love it! The red marquee would look good with the blue and white IMO.

no really, I have a replica of the marquee and on its own, its definitly the wrong color! I wish my marquee was that color blue.

The run down-ness...

… is probably more attributable to your young eyes only having seen beautiful 22 megapixel well shot photos for most of the last decade since nice digital cameras became relitivly affordable.

I mean hell, look at the SKY in Al’s photo vs the one in question. I doubt the sky has gotten less run-down in the last 50 years, but it for sure looks crisper in Al’s photo.

The blue could be painted to pop and look good. It’s classic, and it would have been a nice fresh look to go along with that “Year 1” thing that didn’t make any sense.

Right that's why I said "in that picture..."

Moreover, I would say it’s not classic for most fans. Most fans know of it as red. Red should stay.

Are those state flags hung up around the park?

I swear that’s a California flag hanging to the right of the marquee.

Probably seeing as how they're playing the Dodgers

I don’t know when the Cubs started doing this but for a long time, they’ve hung the visiting team’s city and state flags on one side, and the Chicago and Illinois flag on the other.

by calicubfan on Nov 23, 2010 9:16 PM CST up reply actions

Ahhh... that makes sense now

I know it’s definitely 2 flags for each side) and the city flag is one of the pairs. And when you commented on the california state flag, I just assumed the state flag was the other pair.

But something was gnawing at the back of my brain ‘cause I never really recall seeing an Illinois state flag there. So now, I’m almost definitely sure it’s the city and team flags for each side. If your avatar was just a bit wider, you’d see another set of flags.

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

by ballhawk on Nov 23, 2010 10:03 PM CST up reply actions

Yep, though the flag placement now is a little different than the picture above

the 4 flags now are all on the lower level and closer together on either side of the marquee. Plus, for some reason I haven’t been able to fathom, they are taken down each game around the 6th inning or so.

Looks more like Carolina blue to me.

Wow, Wrigley really looked run-down at that time. If I give the Tribune Co. credit for anything during their ownership tenure, it’s that they really did take good care of the ballpark. If only they had cared as much about the team on the field. I am trying hard to believe (without a lot of success at the moment) that the Ricketts care more about the team than the ballpark. The ballpark is important. Winning the World Series is more important.

I think that's partly because of the quality of the photo.

True accuracy would require the removal of Dallas Green’s ad board from the bottom of the marquee. It has always looked tacked-on, and disturbs the symmetry.

by bourbon_and_branch on Nov 23, 2010 7:36 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I’m not talking about the electronic board – it’s the portion that was labeled “Allstate” last weekend and bore Budweiser ads from 1982-1986 that bugs me.

by bourbon_and_branch on Nov 26, 2010 7:02 PM CST up reply actions

Well, you'd have to eliminate the electronic board...

… to put it back to its “traditional” look.

Seriously, this bothers you?

It’s not so much about “tradition.” Look closely – the board I’m referencing is a separate element that isn’t even attached to the marquee itself. It just looks tacked on. Integrate it with the marquee or take it down, I say.

You're an artist...

… you could paint it blue!

"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra

by Al Yellon on Nov 24, 2010 7:37 AM CST up reply actions

No way!

This is another artist’s painting. I couldn’t do that. It would be sacrilegious. Besides, I’d have to go over his signature and lose some of the wonderful details that you can’t see in the photograph that are highlighting the lettering, etc. It’s wonderful piece of art. I can’t mess with it.

It really wouldn’t bother me that much if they painted the real one blue. I would look at the bright side and consider this painting as a bit of history. Kind of like how many of the barns I’ve painted in McHenry County are now gone and I am happy to have documented them.

Purple though…I’d have a problem with.

by katie casey on Nov 24, 2010 9:04 AM CST up reply actions

I thought it was a cool tribute to Northwestern.

I would actually like it

If they painted the wall BEHIND the marquee blue, rather than the Marquee itself.

That way, the marquee remains in its “legendary” red color, and we also add cubbie blue, thus having both team colors in the front of Wrigley.

Do you think Jim Hendry and the baseball people were involved in planning the football game? Of course not. They’re talking to free agents and other GM’s about deals all the time.
