Friday Name That Cub
It's a slow weekend for baseball news... so let's play Name That Cub today.
I especially like the expression on this lefthander's face.

Wow.
Four minutes.
Bowie started only 11 games for the Cubs, seven of them at Wrigley, so this is a pretty rare photo.
He might have been the worst starting pitcher in team history. He posted a 9.96 ERA in those 11 starts and a 2.19 WHIP. How the Cubs managed to win four of those games is beyond me.

He was wearing the same "hat" on his 1984 Fleer card.

The worst?
He’s a Cub, Al. You and I know that’s saying a lot. Worst takes in a lot of territory.
Where is Mick Kelleher when we need him?

Hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving, Al?
I just finished reading your “Why are we Here” post. How old are you? Me, 52. I recall day games at my Grammas, my clearest recollections are of Ernie, Ronny, Beckert… was at Wrigley for Holtzmanns no-no, also Pappas’ … Just curious. I was born 1958, Dec…but not sure when you begin “clear memories” as a kid…

He looks terrified
At first, I thought he was wearing a fierce game face, but after seeing his stats it seems much more likely that it’s the expression of someone who’s dreading this pitch because he knows it’s going to get pounded.
Yeah, I know there should be an apostrophe in "Vails," but punctuation wasn't an option when I signed up.

Yeah
I would say Atlanta got the best of that deal, though I do not remember who all was involved in that transaction.

From Hernandez's baseball-reference page
July 31, 1999: Traded by the Chicago Cubs with Terry Mulholland to the Atlanta Braves for a player to be named later, Micah Bowie and Ruben Quevedo. The Atlanta Braves sent Joey Nation (August 24, 1999) to the Chicago Cubs to complete the trade.
The three pitchers the Cubs acquired had the following numbers as Cubs:
34 games, 28 starts, 146.2 innings, 181 hits, 134 ER, 92 BB, 112 K, 8.22 ERA, 1.86 WHIP
No wonder Ed Lynch was fired.

Pre-trade rumors had Bruce Chen headed for the Cubs.
Chen never did live up to his minor league rep, but he certainly was no Micah Bowie.

I remember the trade
The trade happened the day we found out my oldest was a boy. I remember driving home from the doctor’s office and hearing it on the radio. NO we didn’t name him Micah Ruben as my husband jokingly suggested. To which my son is forever grateful!

If you had waited for the announcement of the "player to be named later,"
there might have been quite a temptation to name your son “Bowie Nation.”

Is that Jay Baller?
I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"
You know, I was stumped at first.
But I think you’re right.

Yes it is
It’s a picture I took during spring training march 1986 at Ho Ho Kam park. Like Al’s picture above, I just love that expression on his face.

I don't think it's going to be close.
Wisconsin 45, Northwestern 21, with the Badgers going to the Rose Bowl by clinching the Big Ten title.

Unfortunately, yes.
Northwestern might have had a shot, but two of its top offensive players will be out — Dan Persa and Mike Trumpy.
If they can win without them, that would be a huge upset.

That's a huge "if", and to be honest,
I don’t see it happening. With the way the games in the Big Ten are scheduled today, Wisconsin will go into their game knowing what they need to do in order to win the Big Ten title. Michigan State and Ohio State both play at 11 AM CDT.
I see it playing out as follows: Ohio State over Michigan, Penn State over Michigan State, and Wisconsin over Northwestern. If that happens, Wisconsin goes to the Rose Bowl courtesy of their head-to-head win over Ohio State in mid-October.

Sorry VCF - you're gonna have to sweat it out a little longer
Odds are much better that all three (Wis, OSU, MSU) will win and thus will need to wait for the BCS rankings to determine who goes to Rose Bowl. Given the current rankings, it stands to reason that Wis will still end up on top but remember, it’s the BCS we’re talking about – stranger things have happened.

And MSU wins,
Meaning Wisconsin needs to win and have the BCS computers help them (which oddly did not happen after the last two wins over Indiana and Michigan, Wisconsin actually lost BCS points after both games).

John Rambo
Bowie looks a little like Sly Stallone as John Rambo in that pick. Take away the baseball, put him in a ripped shirt, and add a M-60 going at full auto you’ve got it.
