Sunday Name That Cub

Perhaps when next week begins, there will be some actual Cubs trades or signings to discuss. The winter meetings are just a week away.

Until then, let's have another go at naming a Cub. There are clues here, but I won't give them away.

DINGDINGDING!

Winner.

Marvell Wynne was a throw-in in a trade where the Cubs acquired Luis Salazar late in the 1989 season. That was a good deal for the Cubs as Salazar got some key hits down the stretch and helped them win the division in 1989.

what do you know!

first time I’ve ever gotten one of these right. I remember Wynne both for that trade (because I liked Salazar a lot) and also because I was later reminded of him when the Cubs got Bob Patterson, who had been traded for Wynne (straight up IIRC) earlier in his career. Sweet!

Why do you have such a thing about Jon Garland?

The Cubs have several pitchers who can be inning-eaters like Garland at 1/10 the price.

by TJ11 on Nov 28, 2010 8:22 PM CST up reply actions

so then why do the Cubs need Garland

for 2 years at $16 million? That isn’t cheap. Another mid-rotation guy isn’t going to do anything for the Cubs chances. I’m not expecting much in 2011 so signing someone like Garland for a deal like that doesn’t excite me.

I think the question you should be asking yourself is...

what are the chances that Kerry would want to sign with the Cubs?

I chuckled at the wording of the featured poll question on the right sidebar – “Should the Cubs go after Kerry Wood? (At the right price, of course.)”

Well, of course we should – especially at the “right price”, whatever that is. We should go after Cliff Lee, Adrian Beltre, and Carl Crawford too – at the right price, of course. But a better question would be something like “Should Kerry Wood consider signing with the Cubs?”.

Dunston suffered a strained shoulder, and Wynne received three stitches on his forehead to close a cut. Both are African-American, and the fight started when one said to the other, ‘You’re not black. You’re too black to be black. You’re purple.’ They shook hands and co-existed peacefully from that point forward.” http://www2.kusports.com/news/2009/sep/23/its-time-call-truce/

Cubs By The Numbers

Cubs By The Numbers is a history of the ballclub by uniform number, but the biographies help trace the history of our beloved team in a new way. For everyone who's a Cubs fan, anyone who ever wore the uniform is like family. Cubs By The Numbers reintroduces readers to some of their long-lost ancestors, even ones they think they already know.
