DeRosa, Now Theriot

What is going on? The Cubs trade second basemen to other clubs only for them to be traded from that team to the Cardinals in short order. Hey, you can get a good deal on a Theriot T-shirt jersey. Is it really worth $4.95?

The Cardinals better not be looking for Theriot to give them what Eckstein did about five years ago.

TheRiot...

…will have a good season next year. I can’t stand the Cards/LaRussa…. but I do think they can pull out something extra from certain types of players. Theriot being one of them.

I thought the Cards wanted an upgrade over Felipe López...

Riot has virtually no experience at 3B, and probably doesn’t have the hands (or arm) to play there. One of the Cards’ supposed goals was to have a good backup for injury-prone David Freese.

They also wanted better offense at SS. While Riot is marginally better than Brendan Ryan offensively, Ryan is light-years ahead defensively.

What they really got was an expensive (likely $3M) platoon partner for Skip Schumaker at 2B.

The Cards supposedly didn’t have much money to spend… I’m surprised they’d waste $3M on a platoon guy. And I’m not sure how much of an upgrade Riot is over López (or Aaron Miles).

Obviously the Cards like Theriot, but enough to go to arbitration with him?

the Cubs were going to non-tender him, so they threw him into the Lilly deal. Dodgers were going to non-tender him, so they were lucky to get what they got in Hawksworth. The Cards must have really feared he would have signed elsewhere after being non-tendered by LA. If St L pays TheRiot $4 million in arbitration, they will really be suckers. On the other hand, he truly was underpaid in 2007-2009 when he was a solid player earning the minimum. Good for him to get overpaid now, although Cards can still non tender him.

He always did have a big mouth….disproportionately big for such a little guy. Not suprising he’s still taking shots at the Cubs for trading him. Since he always viewed himself as a NL version of Derek Jeter, when in truth I can name about a dozen Cubs shortstops in my lifetime that I’d rather have than him, starting with Shawon Dunston, and going straight through to Starlin Castro. And even though Ryan is great defensively I’d rather have a bat than his glove. Who knows, maybe they will have Schu, Theriot, and Ryan slug it out for starting jobs this year as opposed to dumping BR. It should mean an improvement either way.

"running his mouth?"

How exactly did Theriot ‘run his mouth?’ I heard Theriot’s initial comment about being on the rightside of the Cubs/Cards rivalry but he’s laughing as he says it. Is that it, or do you have examples of how Theriot ran his mouth, unless you mean by merely talking to the St. Louis radio station he ran his mouth.

I can't believe he made

that lame comment. I had no ill will toward the guy. He was and still is a average ballplayer who is fortunate to have MLB work.
Our luck the guy will have a career year.

When the STL Magic Pixie Dust gets to him, he'll hit .319/.424/.365 with 41 SB in 45 attempts.

…and 115 runs scored.

When I heard about this trade

I giggled, but then nearly that exact same stat line entered my head. It’s amazing how things work out for those guys.

Gotta love this article

stltoday.com

The Cards played hard for most of last season, but they played sloppily. The mental side of their game went bad.

They ran into outs on the basepaths.
They yielded extra outs in the field. They gave away at-bat after at-bat against no-name pitching.

Some of the Cards’ 2010 failure could be explained through statistical analysis. But a big part of the flop fell into the broad category of "bad baseball" – doing many little things wrong, for reasons nobody could really explain.

This led to the acquisition of Ryan Theriot, a gritty La Russa-type player in the David Eckstein mold.

Theriot to the rescue Cards fans!

I gotta put Sosa on that list too...

Only guy I’ve ever seen get fooled by the fake to third routine… twice.

But my favorite was in St. Louis, actually. There was a high line drive to center that everyone in the stadium knew was at least off the wall, if not a homer. Edmonds was playing his typical shallow CF, and had no chance to get it. He deked like he was going to catch it, about 100’ from where the ball landed, and I’m not exaggerating.

Sosa was a runner on second, fell for the fake and went back towards second only to see the ball slam off of the center field wall, it took one, maybe two bounces back to Edmonds who just turned around and threw a strike home to get Sosa by about 15 feet. It was silly.

So if Fonty is non tendered

will the Cardinals sign him so he and Riot can be happily reunited ?

I didn't believe it last August, but it turns out that love survives.

Irony

The people who are upset with the shots Theriot took shots at the Cubs in his St. Louis radio interview are, in many cases, the same people who took shots at Theriot on this board when he was a Cub. If you imagine for a second that Theriot had some conception of how he was viewed by Cubs fans, I don’t think you’d be all that surprised to hear he doesn’t have a lot of loyalty to his old team/new rival.
