I'm Confused. Is Santo Left Off HOF Ballot?
MLB announced a new veterans committee ballot with 12 names, none of which are Ron Santo. Does this mean he's being left off, is this different than when he's been on? What goes here?

It looks like this is just for the "Expansion Era"
They divided it up in the last ballot. I think there are two other eras before the Expansion era. I’m not sure what their names are but I think Santo falls in that second category since he didn’t play from 1973-89 (Expansion Era years). I think he’s in the Golden Era (???).
Anyone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong with any of that information. But I think that’s why he’s not on that particular ballot.
Counting the days until 4/1/11...
Yeah, something like that.....
After I posted this I re—read the article for the fifth or sixth time, and it looks like the three “eras” are rotated every three years. So while IIRC, Santo was up for election every other year, now he goes every third year possibly. That kind of stinks, if only because of his fragile health, but at the same time it might increase his chances going up against a smaller group. The MLB article did a poor job explaining the new set up, no matter what the answer is.

from the final graph...
“The Expansion era covers umpires and executives who made their greatest contributions to the game from 1973 to the present. For the players, that term is 1973-89. "
Santo’s .267 and .221 performances in 73 and 74 were clearly not his greatest contributions.
I think I speak for everyone here when I say, "Wait, what the hell are you talking about?"
So he'd be "Golden Era" then...
… a rather dumb name for it IMO.

The era names are dumb.
The system is designed to get SOMEONE elected by the Veterans Committee, which has stubbornly elected almost no one in recent years.

Didn't the Veterans Committee go 3 straight ballots with no one voted in?
But I don’t understand putting Steinbrenner on this specific ballot. Wouldn’t he be on the Executive/Manager ballot?

No, this one is done by eras...
… with everyone included.

It's a shame
Had the Veteran’s Committee kept their pre-2003 voting procedures, Ron most likely would have been voted in.
I think Santo forgot to apply
There’s probably a registration fee too.

He forgot to check a box on the form...
…oops, wrong team.
Just win the next game...!

No Jim Kaat?
I suppose Kaat had his best years with the Twins in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. Though, he did pitch pretty well with the White Sox in the mid-1970’s. I guess Kaat is considered to be in the same era with Santo. Kaat was still a decent pitcher for many years after his glory days with the Twins and White Sox. Kaat was in the same bullpen with Bruce Sutter on the 1982 Cardinals world championship team.
