Ron Santo Funeral Friday At 10 AM
Today at 10 a.m., Ron Santo will be eulogized at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. Last night, thousands of mourners paid their last respects. George Castle captured the scene for SB Nation Chicago; if you haven't already seen that article, check out how classy and respectful it was.
The funeral service will be carried live on WGN-TV in Chicago -- not on the national feed. However, several local websites will be streaming the service live including our friends at CSN Chicago. WGN-TV says the service will also be archived on their website afterwards, so if you can't watch this morning, you can catch it later today or this evening.
Use this thread this morning for discussion of the funeral service. Farewell, Ron; you "bled Cubbie blue" as much or more than any of us.

Aw...wow...that is nice.
I wasn’t able to make it so thanks to you and others for sharing your experience. I appreciate it.

It's a great card,
but I can imagine Ron having some interesting things to say about using a photo that shows him in, of all places, New York City.

I just saw this card
on sale on ebay. For $500. Talk about sleeze trying to take advantage of something
It is sad.
And the jerks that wouldn’t shake Hendry’s had were completely out of line as well. Obviously there are some bad apples out there, but what we have to remember is that the majority of us Cubs fans are good-hearted people that want to celebrate the life and times of Ron Santo. That’s what we need to remember. Obviously it is a shame that people are doing this, but I know that most of the Cub fans out there today honoring Ron are classy individuals just paying their respects.
It's time, guys. Let's win it for Ronnie...

Thanks for posting
this for those of us who could not attend.
A lovely story:
One day, long, long ago, there lived a woman who didn't whine, nag or bitch. That would be me....
But that was a long time ago and it was just that one day.
The end
Sad now...
I’m remembering, though, the joy of watching from the stands when he played third, and the joy and passion in his play. For that, we can all look back on his very-well-lived life.
Thanks, Ron.

You know....
… the part of Castle’s article, a very nice piece, where some fans didn’t want to shake Hendry’s hand because of contracts, etc. Those “fans” need to get a life and some perspective. If I say anything more, well, those “fans” make me sick. leave it at that.

Yeah
Like many, I was able to see firsthand Hendry’s friendship and devotion to Santo. The article mentions how shaken up he was. He’s out there in the freezing cold greeting people, and still he has to put up with $#@ from some cretins. Utterly classless on their part.

Cretins is not a sufficiently strong word to describe these people.
If Sullivan had written the piece, I would’ve doubted the validity of the report and the amount of people who refused to shake Hendry’s hand. But I’m inclined to believe Castle didn’t exaggerate.

Late in the season, in the midst of an inning and it’s just past the top of the hour so Pat mentions that we’re due for a station break. Ron kinda mumbles "Didn’t we just have one of those?" and without missing a beat Pat says "About an hour ago."

Camp in January will be wrenching in parts
I won’t be able to go, but Randy’s a loyal, emotional, great guy in his own right. I was at the first camp held after Gene Oliver passed away. Randy broke down talking about him, and in what was sincerely a classy move, Ed Lynch stepped up and took over talking to us about whatever logistical things Randy was trying to convey that normally Oliver would have been doing. Once Ronnie had his amputatons, he was no longer able to coach or be there every day. His appearances were always one of the highlights though, and he and Randy genuinely loved each other. They were Reb and Dago. Santo’s passing leaves a void in so many places.

Randy Hundley really is awesome...
I’m not sure how Todd Hundley is that guy’s son. Just sayin…
That group of guys on the ‘69 team really seemed like a family. I’m sure they are going to miss Ronnie a ton.
It's time, guys. Let's win it for Ronnie...
"Family"
I can see that you are right, the core group of that 1969 team are like a family.
I was watching one of those WGN video tributes to Ron… and I believe it is the Forever Young on… Anyway, Santo, Jenkins, and some other people are in an office room… and they all had dress suits and ties. Santo was saying something and Jenkins was laughing and it looked like he was dancing while Ronnie was talking. I have no idea what that scene is from… (i was wondering if anyone knew…) but it brought a tear to my eye because like you said, they are like family. It’s great to see that… and its great to experience something like that.
If anyone knows what that video was from… let me know.
That group of players was before my time. I really wish the Cubs would release some DVDs documenting that area and those players. I can just tell from the videos that it was something special.

Well
I hate to keep harping on the fact that I’ve been to two Hundley camps, because I truly don’t want to appear like I’m rubbing it in, but the core group of players that make that camp so much fun is the 69 era guys. Kessinger, Beckert, Williams, Jenkins, Randy, even Joe Pepitone and Jose Cardenal, and the ones that have now left us, Gene Oliver and Ronnie, all really care about each other. It’s evident when you see them interact with each other and talk about each other with the campers. And when guys like Dernier, Sutcliffe, Durham, Jody Davis, Moreland, Lee Smith, Rick Reuschel and even a short time Cub like Willie Wilson or Ron Coomer defer to them as “big brothers” and guys who “paved the way”, it’s really cool to see and experience.

I just told my husband that I would like to send him to camp
as a gift for our 25th wedding anniversary which is coming up in a year. He said he’d feel guilty spending the money on that right now (we have two kids in college). He thinks it would be better to wait until our 30th. I just shook my head and said he should just do it, but I highly doubt he will listen to me. I hope I can change his mind. Life is too short.
We're out of glue.
I am so glad I went to the last one
Ron was there and was…just…inspiring. Randy was complaining one morning that Santo had added two inches to his height with his artificial legs just so he could look down on Randy. It was absolutely hilarious, of course Santo comes in and doesn’t know the story was just told (although I am sure he knew it was told at some point)…Man….it was simply the coolest and best time..

Tough day. I started watching the Cubs in 1960.
So I feel like I’ve lost someone I’ve known my whole life. The first Cub jersey I ever bought was a #10. My Sox fan friends always ask me why I love the 1969 team so much. They say they broke my heart. I tell them because their were 4 hall of famers on that team. Extraordinary man. Well, he’s sitting next to Harry right now laughing and talking baseball. See you later Ron.
I don't think it's really sunk in for me
I usually don’t listen to many spring games, especially with my work schedule, but I know opening day I’m going to have a tough time listening to the radio.
RIP.
It never gets to be easy.
Why the fuck doesn't it ever get to be easy?
Wow, Pat Hughes was truly the right choice!
What a moving eulogy! Also, I don’t know if everyone else saw, but I do believe Ryan Theriot was actually in attendance at the mass.
Ron's teammates
Been thinking about the guys Ron played with in his career. Not the stars, but some of the more “average” players, or those that went on to star on other teams. Adolpho Phillips, Jim Stewart, Paul Popovich, Dick Elsworth, Bob Buhl, Dick Bertell, Lindy McDaniel, Kenny Hubbs, Don Landrum, Larry Jackson, George Altman, Jim Hickman, Andre Rogers, Ted Abernathy, Kenny Holtzman (ok, a star), Chuck Hartenstein, Rich Nye, Harvey Kuenn, Joe Niekro, Byron Browne, Phil Regan, Bill Stoneman, Gene Oliver, Al Spangler, Willie Smith, Dick Selma, Oscar Gamble, Don Young, Bill Hands, Milt Pappas, Johnny Callison, Joe Pepitone, Burt Hooton, Carmen Fanzone, Bill North, Rick Reuschel, Jose Cardenal, Rick Monday, Bill Bonham, Andre Thornton, Tony LaRussa (heh). Ok ok I’ll stop!!
Tony LaRussa...

BEautiful service
BEautiful service As many of you know my youngest’s middle name is Santo. Got a very nice letter from Ron when we wrote him about it that’s in his baby book.
Pat Hughes really did a wonderful job. So did Selig and Ricketts. I hope Pat knows how much he himself is loved by many Cub fans. I’m sure I’m not the only who who hopes he stays with the Cubs his entire career.
Ryno escorted Dutchie Caray.
The one person I noticed absent not only from singing but I didn’t see Wayne Messmer.
Also Mayor Daley wasn’t there.
On Jesse Jackson he actually is a huge Cubs fan.
Ernie doesn’t look the nearly 80 years old he is.
Nice showing by the current team.
I thought I heard Ditka was also there but didn’t see him. There is a bond not only among Cubs players from that era but a general bond among many Chicago athletes from that era.
Personally I held it together until I saw what Randy Hundley did. On a related note saw Todd last night. Apparently he was Ron’s Godson.
And they played my 2 favorite hymns. On Eagles Wings and Be Not Afraid.
Monsignor Myall is wonderful. He married 2 of my cousins.
I thought the lady who sang had a gorgeous voice.

Re: Messmer...I saw a picture of him entering the cathedral.
Re: Pat Hughes…I love him as much as Ronnie (hear me out) because I only knew Ronnie the broadcaster. Obviously a lot of you here have a much closer personal connection to Ronnie than me, but for me personally, I know Ronnie WITH Pat Hughes, because they are all I’ve ever listened to. I too hope that Pat Hughes is a Cub for the rest of his career.
It's time, guys. Let's win it for Ronnie...
I saw that
I saw that above that’s why I made the note in my post about Jesse actually being a huge Cubs fan and for the record I saw a moment he appeared very moved.
He’s not just a Cubs fan for appearances he really knows his stuff. I was involved with an event with him down the stretch in 03 and while waiting for things to begin we got into a very involved discussion.

Saw a pic somewhere online...
…of Wayne and Kathleen Messmer, arriving at the church for the visitation last night. Not sure about today though.
Thanks
Thanks I’m glad to hear it. When he didn’t sing I was a little worried but when I didn’t see him I was a little worried.

Pat Hughes
Just saw/listened to his eulogy. What a great speech given about a great man by a great man. He is just fantastic.
It's time, guys. Let's win it for Ronnie...
HOF
The best hitting and fielding National League third baseman for an entire decade. That alone should punch his ticket for the HOF.
I met Ron two years ago and got to talk to him alone for about 10 minutes. A down to earth man who said to me, “You know, most of the time in the broadcast booth I don’t even know what I am saying.” I had teased him about every day before the game sizing up the opposing pitcher by saying,“He likes to mix up his pitches and change speeds.”
Every singe opposing National League pitcher. We both got a laugh about that.
Wonderful service this morning. RIP
Thank you...
To everyone here, and to Al, for providing a central place for all of us to gather throughout this past week. This has been a place where we all can share our thoughts and our memories, and I have been very grateful. As a Cub fan living out of the Chicago area, I have been unable to participate in any on site commemorations and to know I can come here and read the thoughts of so many others who felt the same way I did meant a lot to me. My grandfather passed away just before Thanksgiving, so this holiday season seems like such a blur to me. With Ronnie’s death, it feels like I lost another family member. Thanks to all of you who assured me I wasn’t the only one crying.
"Cubs fans....the wind beneath the Hawk's wings." Andre Dawson, on his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame, 7/25/10
Rest in peace, Ronnie. You will always be in my Hall of Fame.
I echo your comments sicubsfan...
It’s been a very difficult week for me. I’ve welled up several times. I got to watch him play in the 60’s and 70’s. He homered in the first game I attended in 69.
Nothing against Bob Brenly and Len Kasper, they are great in their own right, but if I was watching the game at home, I would mute the TV and listen to the daily comic relief that was the Pat and Ron show. Pat just knew how to push Ronnie’s buttons. Even when the Cubs were down by ten runs, Pat and Ron had a gift for still making the broadcast interesting.
ronnie
is the one guy who needed to see the cubs win.because he loved them like we do.a real shame.
Not much else to say
A lot of similar sentiments already shared. I heard on WSCR on my drive to work (through the static in eastern Iowa) and cried the rest of the way.
As my dad said when I emailed him about it: “it is like losing your buddy.”
Thanks Ronnie. RIP
I used to be "Jones," but I got swooped on the redesign.
A happy happening relating to Santo
Santo always valued friendship and family so I think maybe he’d be happy to hear that his passing lead direcrly to the mending of an almost 30 year friendship that shattered over a stupid argument 6 months ago.
A very good friend of mine and I had a stupid fight this summer. We have been friends for over 30 years. She’s not a Cubs fan but knew how much Ron meant to me. She picked up the phone and called me to see how I was doing the other night and after some tears, some talking and a long dinner tonight we are friends again.
It will come as no surprise to people who know me here I am a stubborn person and she is as stubborn as me. It took Ron’s passing for one of us to pick up a phone and start the mending process.
Thank you Ron.
