Quite simply, Woody belongs in a Cubs uniform. The Cubs need him here and the Cubs' fans especially need him here. Reeling from a horrifically bad (by recent standards) 2010 season, an uninspired offseason, and the recent death of Ron Santo (poster child for eternal Cubbie optimism), Cubs fans are in dire need of a pick-me-up.

Winning is what Cubs fans need

If Wood helps then that is all that matters. That’s why I wasn’t all sentimental over Sandberg not getting the manager job. I don’t care about Cub history at this point, I’ve seen enough history. They need a championship.

Agreed

I want that world series, I could care less who leads us to it. Maybe years from now we can look back at the days of Castro and Cashner and Jackson leading us to it.

A good bullpen is what we need

True, a lot of people can wear their Wood jerseys and be relevant again. But, this could be the makings of a good bullpen. Marshall and Wood getting the ball to Marmol. If Wood comes in and has lock down 8th innings it could really help focus Marmol mentally.

the bullpen can always use a veteran pitcher

Wood will be a good mentor for everyone on the team.

by ak123 on Dec 16, 2010 10:18 PM CST up reply actions

Right.

Apart from the love we feel for Wood, he will be a significant help baseball-wise. That’s what’s important.

I feel that was strongly missing in 2010

And while he sucked, I think Bob Howry brought some mentorship to the bullpen which really turned around the last few months of the season.

by ak123 on Dec 17, 2010 9:47 AM CST up reply actions

Precisely why the Cubs signed Howry.

Oh for god's sake, talk about moving the goalposts

That is NOT why Howry was signed. You think they thought he’d have a Greg Maddux effect on the bullpen? PUHLEASE

Actually before we bash Howry

He was not a great pitcher 2008-2010 but he did get along with all in clubhouse. And when he was part of the bullpen, the bullpen was always good (even if he wasn’t).

by ak123 on Dec 17, 2010 6:06 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, that's exactly right.

Howry was always viewed as a great clubhouse guy. It is precisely why he was signed — pitching wise, everyone knew he was almost done. Management thought he could mentor the younger players.

“Greg Maddux effect”? No, but they did hope he could help stabilize a very young clubhouse.

Kerry Wood is the poster boy for the Cubs

Yankees have Jeter, Mets have David Wright, Brewers have Fielder and Cardinals have Pujols. Kerry Wood is our guy.

When Kerry Wood is on the mound during a tight game at Wrigley everyone is chanting “Kerry, Kerry, Kerry”. I honestly can’t think of one other player on the Cubs team that gets a chant like that almost every time.

This is why as a fan, we need Kerry Wood back.

I agree, Wood represents what might have been

perfect for the Cubs

I can see it now....

the cheers and excitement in Wrigley when Quade calls in the 8th inning reliever. Can Cubs fans stand it?

Sorry I’m not overly sentimental when it comes to the Cubs nowadays.

He is indeed the embodiment of the team

So much promise early on, complete break down over the course of the season.

I like Kerry Wood but some of you people need to seriously get a grip

As long as he perfoms, who cares

But If he fails, it will bring back more bad memories. So, this could be a miserable move…..hopefully, the guy can pitch as well as he did last year.

But no team should sign ANYBODY because “the fans NEED him.” Excuse me, but that doesn’t make any sense.

by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Dec 17, 2010 12:24 PM CST reply actions

And I don't think that's why they signed him.

They did so because they needed a pitcher who can do exactly what Wood did well for a playoff team last year.

Hard to fathom this being miserable...

when he came as cheap as he did. Our bullpen was lousy last year, and we signed a guy who was lights-out in the AL East last year to a very, VERY team favorable contract. Any sentimental value that fans get from him returning is icing on the cake.

I don't need anything

except wins. If Wood fails, I couldn’t care less if he’s gone.

Fail or succeed, dominate or implode or for better or for worse, Worf...

…I do believe he’ll be here for the duration of his career…and some.

I agree…I don’t need anything either…just allow me watch a Cubs baseball game the last week in October and I’ll be fine.
