Giants, Cubs Discussed Rowand-Fukudome Swap
For the love of god WHY? Why would we discuss that trade? Dome is off the books after this season. Rowand's contract runs through next year. Why would you ADD another big contract you had to wait to get off the books?
My god, Hendry's lack of common sense never ceases to amaze.

Mentioned in the Hudson thread.
I’m guessing that the Giants would have to pay a ton of Rowand’s freight. And, assuming he can still hit (big assumption, I know) he’s a fourth outfielder who can platoon with Colvin AND play all three outfield positions credibly.
I’m not a big fan of this idea. But I see some sense in it depending on money.
Overreact much?
You’re amazed that our GM might talk to the GM of another team regarding the possibility of a deal, whose potential terms you know nothing about other than that they include bad contracts from both sides? Geez.
Stuff like this is why they should shut off the internet.

Al Gore has the on/off switch
Sorry Al, not trying to be political but I couldn’t resist.
John Grabow: $4.8 million in 2011.
Considering that all rumors I heard were for the two straight up?

Yes and there were Kerry Wood rumors were for 2 years and $12M
But that didn’t happen either.
Sometimes these guys just talk and then talk again. Relationships are very important in baseball.
Now go take your meds and calm down.

Maybe that's what Hendry did...figuratively and eventually.
And what were all these rumors you heard? Apparently, all we have are Crasnick’s tweets which, by definition, are very brief. I agree this deal doesn’t seem to make much sense, but there was no “decision” involved — just discussion.

I am absolutely stealing that for later use.
Shut up Joe Morgan.
Me too.
This post was an extreme overreaction. Again, just as in the Wood to the White Sox thing that MLBTR posted a couple days ago, this MLBTR post was extremely poorly written — sounded like there were intensive discussions, but Crasnick’s tweets — what the post was based on — said it was extremely unlikely.
This is why I ask everyone who sees a MLBTR post to look at the source material it comes from before posting anything. Often, MLBTR overemphasizes one tweet and gets the story wrong.
Which is undoubtedly the case here. Beyond the money — why would the Cubs trade an outfielder they don’t need for another outfielder they don’t need?
The person who posted this apparently wanted to take the opportunity to bash Jim Hendry again. Sorry, this time you’re wrong.

I just sent an email to Tim Dierkes about all of this.
I’ll be very interested to hear his response.

Eh. His website is essentially a clearinghouse for rumors presented by the media
It’s not like he’s reporting this stuff first-hand. In the beginning, he would float out some pretty outlandish stuff, seemingly without sources. For quite some time now, though, whatever he puts out is either sourced to someone, like Crasnick, or he will say that it’s his own speculation.
I have no problem with him putting out stuff like this, and letting us decide if the source is credible or not.

It depends on HOW it is reported.
Some of his posts are written in a way that doesn’t convey the meaning of the article he’s sourcing.
That’s why I ask people here to check the original source of a MLBTR post before they post it here, or better yet, post the original.

absurd. Domeis due $ 13.5 mill this year, Rowand is due $24 mill over 2 years
and Dome fills the Cubs needs better. If there even was a discussion, it probably lasted less than a minute. NEXT….
ask not what the Cubs can do for you - ask what you can do for the Cubs.
Totally agree on the money.
But Rowand could platoon with Colvin and credibly back up Byrd in center. Unless you’re saying Kosuke fits the Cubs needs better because he’s a leadoff option (which is questionable), I think there’s an argument to be made that Rowand — assuming he has anything left — could be valuable to the Cubs.
Upon further reflection...
…I will admit that Rowand is Reed-Johnson-esque in that his splits do favor him hitting vs. LHP. So a platoon with Colvin is at least understandable. But the money still doesn’t even out, and I really wouldn’t relish the thought of Rowand being here for two years. One season as a platoon guy I could maybe live with.

That's fair.
Keeping Kosuke does allow Colvin to get a lot of bats against lefties, allowing us to see if he can be a full-time player (like everyday) in 2012.
Let's look at something that at least resembles "the facts"...
1. Brian Sabean has stated that he does not see Aaron Rowand as a starting OF for the Giants in 2011 (he would have to beat out Pat Burrell), but he realizes that Rowand might not be happy with the 4th OF role. Therefore, Sabean said that, if he can find a match, he would attempt to trade Rowand.
2. Various Chicago media members have written stories indicating that the Cubs would not mind trading Kosuke Fukudome, especially if they can save significant money.
3. Both players would be classified as having “bad contracts”. Both also have full or partial NTCs. Generally, bad contracts have to be swapped for bad contracts.
4. GMs call each other all of the time about the availability of players.
5. Jim Hendry would probably listen to a proposed Dome-Rowand swap; in particular, he would be listening for the words: “I’ll throw in great wads of cash to make it even”.
6. Jim Hendry might not like the first thing he hears, but he can counter with something like “OK, if you’ll throw in Brandon Belt”.
7. If either GM doesn’t like what the other says, he is likely to say “I don’t think this will work. Let’s move on.” No harm, no foul, no hard feelings. It happens all the time.
8. The national reporters like Heyman and Crasnick tend to blow the most smoke (or smoke the most dope). None of either team’s beat writers has said anything.
We see a thousand rumors, and five turn out to be accurate. That’s what the Hot Stove is all about. If you can’t stand the heat…

Why indeed
would you do this?
Fukudome is a better player than Rowand and he’s on a shorter contract. At least sources are saying it’s a long shot.
one reason
Hendry needs access to cash. Rowand is owed $24 over 2 yrs while Fukudome is owed $13.5 over 1 year. Say Sabean is willing to make things even financially and throw in $12M, $6M this year and $6M next year. Instead of the Cubs paying Fukudome $13.5M this year, they’re paying Rowand $7M this year and $7M next year. Hendry now has more money to play with this year, at the expense of next year, however next year there are more contracts coming off the book.
I’m not saying I agree with this move or strategy, but its one reason.
That may be why he pushed $5M of Penas deal into 2012
Wonder if some of the loans to purchase the team have covenants for net cash flow?
Top to bottom, this was one weird fan shot----sorry.
And only slightly off the subject…… Rowand is known as a great clubhouse guy. Cubs seem to have been lacking in that area.
Fuk? In three years has he even learned one word of English? Okay, guess I don’t have a point here.
Rowand for Fuk makes sense for this year’s outfield configuration, but makes little sense money wise, unless, as mentioned above, the GM’s get creative and the Cubs aren’t on the hook for too much next year.
