Oh I dunno... that White Sox discard we got in 1992 didn't turn out so bad...

Of course, I’m talking about Ken Patterson. ;-)

I'll believe it when I see it.

It certainly wouldn’t fit what we’ve seen of the Ricketts’ MO.

That said, SAYING that we’re in on Konerko might be.

Paulie on the Northside

I would love to see Paulie in a Cubs uniform, but the Ricketts won’t spend money. An option, for bullpen help would be to sign Erick Threet. The White Sox didn’t tender a contract. Theets has nasty stuff and is LH.

by LuvMLB on Dec 2, 2010 4:29 PM CST reply actions

The problem with Threets is...

… he can’t stay healthy.

by Al Yellon on Dec 2, 2010 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

Not such a good idea.....oops!!!

LHP Erick Threets(notes) (Tommy John surgery in September 2010) is expected to miss all of the 2011 season.

by LuvMLB on Dec 2, 2010 4:57 PM CST up reply actions

Pass

Unless it’s a one-year deal. I doubt Paulie is going to leave the Southside for just a one-year deal from the Cubs.

by JSB on Dec 2, 2010 4:42 PM CST reply actions

I'd do this, IF...

… it were no more than a two-year deal (maybe with a third year option) at a decent price. Konerko can still hit and he’s a great clubhouse guy.

Why do keep saying this?

None of the 1st baseman on the market are gonna make us or break next season. What happens if you hand out a multi year deal and A Gon or Pujols is willing to sign next season? We need to let the pieces fall where they may and take whatever leftover is out there for a 1yr stopgap.

by kanderber on Dec 2, 2010 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

And then what?

The difference between LaRoche/Pena/Berkman and Konerko isn’t likely to make-or-break next season. At this point the Cubs would be wise to go all-in on the 1B FA class of 2012.

by JSB on Dec 2, 2010 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

There is no 1st base class of 2012

Pujols stays a Cardinal, Gonzalez is going to be on the Red Sox and Fielder is not worth the price. Forget them.

by SouthWabashSoul on Dec 2, 2010 5:38 PM CST up reply actions

We don't know any of that now

And if you don’t think Fielder is worth the cash, why would you spend money on Konerko? Fielder is a dominant hitter.

by JSB on Dec 2, 2010 5:41 PM CST up reply actions

Ugh. No.

We don’t need more right-handed hitters in their mid-30s who are best suited to hit fifth of sixth. We should get at least one guy to break up the logjam of Byrd-Ramirez-Soriano.

I don’t want Konerko. But two years with an option? That’s insane, Al.

by elgato on Dec 2, 2010 5:13 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

with Al on this one. Konerko for a year or two is better than Dunn for 4. Better D, good clubhouse force, has won a WS in Chicago.

by SouthWabashSoul on Dec 2, 2010 5:42 PM CST up reply actions

I'd rather have Nady on a

one year deal than Konerko on anything over 1 year for this club, right now. Any chance of the Cubs competing this year depended on them overspending for Dunn and getting a 1 or 2 starter like Grienke via trade. Konerko isn’t going to put them in contention this year, and signing him would give the Ricketts an excuse not to pay a premier first baseman next year.

DEJESUS!!!

Konerko has the tools. He’s healthy. Yes, he had a career year last year and will probably revert more to the mean next year.

That said, he offers much better defense than Dunn, played 125 games at first, walks more and strikes out less than Dunn, and slugs better than Lee at the same age. The only stumbling block I see is that this is probably his last contract and I assume he’s looking for something like 4-5 years, and I would prefer him for 2-3.

Why would we sign one of two aging right-handed bats when there are younger lefty bats available?

by elgato on Dec 2, 2010 5:14 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I think Hendry realizes that the Cubs aren't winning the World Series in 2011

And you really can’t put all the blame on him when Ricketts refuses to increase payroll

Viva la Cubs Révolution!!!

by Chanman25 on Dec 2, 2010 5:19 PM CST up reply actions

Actually, I think just the opposite.

With all due respect to all the normal BCB rationalizations, Hendry made this bed. Now, he’s gotta lay in it.

by elgato on Dec 2, 2010 5:23 PM CST up reply actions   2 recs

Well I agree with that

but there were “talks” of Ricketts wanting to add to payroll, if I remember. And so far, that hasn’t occured.

Regardless, I think Hendry is gone after this season.

Viva la Cubs Révolution!!!

by Chanman25 on Dec 2, 2010 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

Alright!!! Let's all hope the Cubs sign a 1B who

Is 4 years older than Dunn
who is coming off a 12 million a year contract
and has worse numbers than Dunn

Break out the pen, Jimbo!!! With Konerko and Baker 2011 is THE YEAR!!!!!

by ScottT on Dec 2, 2010 5:15 PM CST reply actions

Worse numbers than Dunn?

Konerko 977 OPS last year, compared to Dunns .892 with a career low of .356OBP and 199 K’s.
Four years older is Konerko, that is the major drawback for me.

by Grockcubs on Dec 2, 2010 6:23 PM CST up reply actions

I wasn't only looking at last years numbers

I was looking at career stats. Dunn has averaged more homers, rbis, OPS and OPB.

Please no.

Thank God Dunn is signed. Hopefully the Orioles can save the Cubs from a stupid signing. By opening day 2012, the only ridiculous contracts left on the books will be Zambrano, Soriano and Dempster. Do what it takes to sign Prince Fielder or Adrian Gonzalez…..REAL free agents.

Pick an aging 1B, any aging 1B

Konerko
Berkman
LaRoche
Pena
Johnson
Branyan

Then throw a dart at the list. Pretty much any of these guys could be it, but I don’t think the Cubs will pay much for whoever they pick. Doubtful it’s for more than 1 year with maybe an option.

by WGNstatic on Dec 2, 2010 7:15 PM CST reply actions

I'd be stunned too

Konerko is a player I would sign. He probably wants something long term though. And the Cubs are down for wanting a lefthanded hitter.

Dunn will probably do well at the Cell and he can DH if they get another 1st baseman. By signing Dunn now, it seems the Sox wrote their own benchmark for the higher salary per year they would have to give Konerko to get him. They wouldn’t have to give him as many years, but they would have to give him more per year. Sure, Konerko could go out like a light bulb but he’s coming off a great year and he’s a team leader.

For me, it's simple:

Kenny Williams is smarter than Jim Hendry. If Kenny Williams is willing to jettison a guy who’s arguably been his best hitter over the past ten years, there has to be a good reason, namely that he’s started on the decline and isn’t going to be worth the money he’ll want.
Do Not Want.

by bluekoolaide on Dec 2, 2010 8:04 PM CST reply actions

I think...

…the Sox just may resign Konerko.

The Cubs won’t get him for two reasons; Konerko has way too much respect for Reinsdorf to sign with the Cubs, and Hendry simply can’t spend that kind of money on one player.

I pretty much agree that the Cubs won't sign him

all we’ve been hearing is that they aren’t in a spending mode this off season. This strikes me as just a little “tire kicking” to show the fan base that they’re at least considering moves.

by bluekoolaide on Dec 2, 2010 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

Except Konerko hasn't necessarily been jettisoned.

I’m still reading that the Sox want both Dunn and Konerko on the team next season.

Why is everyone so sure Ricketts won’t spend money, when this is his first hot stove? And I wouldn’t say he isn’t spending money he is already locked in on a lot, he is kind of handcuffed. And to say we won’t be any good before the first pitch is thrown, c’mon man we have to have something to believe in until proven otherwise. I think Quade will keep these motivated this season.

I'll believe it when I see it.

I think Konerko is probably out of their price range considering the Rickett’s desire to get the payroll situation under control.
