Cubs fall "out of pace" in Webb chase
I'm not too sad. I could have gone either way with Webb. I'd still like to see the Cubs trade for Garza. Or sell the farm for Felix.

I'd rather not sell the farm for Felix
If the Cubs had a shot at contending next season, Felix would be a piece that would be needed to put the Cubs over the top.

Is the ONE guy I would trade the entire system for. If you factor in his age, production, health, and other variables, you could argue there is no other pitcher in the league that is better fitted to build a team around. Glad to hear about Webb, let’s pocket the cash and put it into next year’s draft.

I didn't post this because...
… it could be posturing from Webb’s agent.

There's no reason the Cubs shouldn't have this guy.
He’s a low risk, ace talent pitcher that no matter what his agent wants will not get more than a million plus incentives.
If the Cubs are scared by his medicals, then surely that just means he’s healthy enough to pitch. I don’t trust the Cubs on these reclamation project sans Ryan Dempster…

Assuming that you're sober.
Would you want to pitch in Arlington or play for the Nationals?

Point taken. I just don't see them contending on a consistent basis. Not that the Cubs are any closer...
But it’s obvious that pitchers have never liked tossing there. Cliff Lee is the most recent example.
I’d honestly choose Washington over Texas if given the choice. They’re close.

i wonder if having Nolan Ryan as a part owner will change that in the coming yers

Can't argue with that at all.
There was a great SI story earlier in the season on how Ryan changed the pitching mentality for the Rangers. After reading that story, I was convinced that Texas was going to the World Series.
I later forgot that conviction but dammit they went to the Series anyway.

i honestly thought that Ryan might be a reason for Lee to stay in Texas

And you think the Cubs are perceived as contenders on a regular basis by players??
You should be careful questioning the sobriety of others

Pay attention...
“Not that the Cubs are any closer…”
I would question yours.

Well, there's one- the team has no money.
I don’t mean that literally- they’ll probably spen some marginal amount in the next few months.
But looking at this offseason… They had to finance a 1-year, $10M deal. Its widely reported that T
they had to seek out the personal approval of Tom Ricketts for Kerry Wood’s $1.5M deal- a deal that will probably pay for itself in jerseys alone. Carrie Muskat, the “all is well” voice of the Cubs, notes that there was no money available to add an impact player who was traded elsewhere.
Suffice it to say, if Webb’s price crept above “ludicrously cheap”, we aren’t players. The Cubs need to trade away some salary obligations if their owner is going to feel comfortable making a bigger move.

Has there been any credible indication...
…that the Mariners are willing to deal King Felix? I sure haven’t seen it.
Re: Webb, it is starting to look like the Cubs may get outbid (not necessarily a bad thing) and Hendry will focus solely on Garza, which has me feeling a little uneasy.

No...
…in fact they have stated they will NOT be trading him shortly after the Yankees failed to net Cliff Lee. This was my own wish, that’s all.
Cliff Lee going to the Phillies was good news for Webb and the Rays. All the teams that need another starter are now that much more desperate.

Ah, OK. Just checking.
And, yeah, I just don’t “trust” the Rays to be anything but ruthless about getting as much as they can for Garza. I’ve read that Hak-Ju Lee will be an absolute necessity, and I’m really conflicted about giving him up — especially for Garza, who’s a good pitcher but not a great one.

It's the ol' prospect vs. major leaguer debate, I guess.
A future middle infield of Lee and Castro would appear very good. Then again, it’s hard to say whether Lee will ever hit enough to justify a starting job. And Garza is a bona fide MLB pitcher, though hardly a No. 1 or possibly not even a No. 2. If this were Zach Greinke we were talking about, I’d lean a little more heavily toward a yes.
Oh, and according to Bruce Levine as detailed here, the Rays are asking for at least Lee and Chinros.

If he was all or the centerpiece, I would agree
His upside is banjo-hitting middle infielder with a top-notch glove. A useful player, but equivalent talent is regularly available in the amateur draft. And there is no guaranty he will actually hit Major League pitching.
Cubs need to make an internal evaluation of Lee
If they don’t think he will ever hit enough to be an everyday MLB player, they should deal him now.
