Dear Santa,

Please let this not be true. I depend on the radio and cubs.com to listen to day games at work. I literally switch to the opposing feed for the 5th inning or just keep an eye on gameday. I could not take an entire game of Judd Sirott's screaming and non-analysis.

I promise to remember to leave you cookies and egg nog if you will just leave a real radio partner under the Cubs Christmas tree.

Love,

This would be a horrific mistake.

Sirott is perhaps the worst baseball broadcaster I have ever heard. One inning is bad enough. Three would make the middle innings completely unlistenable.

Please, WGN and the Cubs. If you decide to go this way, hire Cory Provus back from the Brewers. Judd Sirott should never again be allowed near a baseball microphone.

I'd definitely oppose three innings of Sirott.

I was thinking the other day that maybe the best thing would be to have Pat Hughes do the radio broadcasts alone for a season (OK, OK…Judd could relieve him for an inning, if necessary). The “silent chair” next to Pat would be a tribute to Ron and then they could hire a new color guy for 2012. Just a thought.

Sutcliffe

If the cubs got 2 of my 3 all time favorite pitchers back in the fold (with the all time favorite already back witht he organization) the pain of Santo passing will be lessened a bit as Kerry’s return has already lessened it.

My perfect scenrario would be Sutcliffe and when he had ESPN obligations Todd Hollandsworth to fill in. I like Todd and think it would be a good thing for him to get that exposure.

by mikegncb34 on Dec 22, 2010 6:08 PM CST reply actions

Agreed...

I happen to think that Pat Hughes is one of the tiptop radio men in all the league, so what I say will be biased, but here goes:

I don’t know the ins and outs of Hughes contract and I neither care nor wish to make it my business, but the fact that Judd sat in for an inning a game, whilst performing horribly (where is this ‘improvement’ that Levine talks about - I sure haven’t heard it), leads me to believe that Hughes had an inning off drawn up. I am probably completely wrong in this assumption but it’s the only way I can mesh Judd Sirrott doing PBP for the Cubs considering how awful he is at the job.

Now word is that Judd will get 3 innings. Hughes agent must be a magician if he can get his client signed for 5 years to work at presumably the same (or higher) pay scale and work 1/3 less.

Ultimately, though, the person who pays the most is the fan who listens to the games. I don’t blame you one second for canceling your mlb audio package. If this actually comes to pass…and considering the sorry state of this club….I’ll join you in sitting this season out.

Forgiven.

We agree though at the fact that it is a big decision. And Pat Hughes is great, but I don’t want to pay to listen to Judd Sirott scream into the mic for 3 innings when I can pay to watch the game and listen to a pretty decent discussion from Len and Bob at the same time.

If it was Pat and Ron again, I’d have no problem getting the Gameday Audio again. But it just will never be the same :(.

It's time, guys. Let's win it for Ronnie...

by mikegncb34 on Dec 22, 2010 10:53 PM CST up reply actions

I'm sure I'm opening a can of worms, but

the cubs are pretty one-sided in their media coverage. And by this I mean that one half of their broadcast teams are dominating.

In television, Len is completely serviceable as a host…I don’t think he’s any great shakes, but Brenly is very good. I had him graded as “above average” on baseball smarts alone, but the fact that he’s willing to drop the verbal hammer on the team when they are underperforming (as he had many opportunities in 2010) bumped him up a notch.

In radio, Hughes is as good as they come. I’ve been open about my criticism of Santo as a broadcaster and that’s been laid to rest. I just hope they can find someone who can make the radio side a ‘complete’ broadcast. It will take time to find someone who can mesh with Hughes, but darnit…the fans are worth it! Find someone who can do the job or find someone who will grow into the job. Don’t take the easy route here and plug in somebody because it’s simple. Sitting Judd in the PBP spot for 3 innings…or even ONE inning.. is regression, not progression.

Has reading comprehension already taken a break for the holidays?

Did anyone bother to read the article?

The Cubs may choose to go in another direction and hire Judd Sirott to do the middle three innings of play-by-play, while both he and Hughes contribute to the other broadcast. Sirott has broadcasted the fifth inning on radio over the last few seasons and has improved to the point that he should be in consideration for a major league broadcasting job.

Key phrase there – “The Cubs may choose…”

This is nothing more than Levine pondering the possibilities – no one from the Cubs or WGN is quoted, no unnamed sources, no anything – just Bruce blowing smoke.

Sheeesh….

Levine does get insider info quite often — and if he’s posting this, it may actually be being considered. Which it should not be.

If Levine thinks Sirott has improved, that’s one thing. If WGN thinks he has, they’re delusional.

How did he get hired?

He was already working for WGN as a hockey pregame host. So, they didn’t have to hire anyone new.

I trust that won’t be an issue now.

If you've read any of Glanville's columns

you know he would be great. The only question is whether he wants to tie himself down to 162 games plus spring training. He’s got business interests to take care of.

Maybe the most hypocritical fan post thread ever....?

Are you guys all sniffing glue for the Holidays? Judd’s too loud? All he does is yell? ALL RON SANTO DID WAS YELL AND GROAN! He was the single worst announcer to ever grace the announcing booth and yet Judd will make you turn off the radio? Ron Santo was an absolute embarrassment! A national embarrassment! Other cities would play his call and laugh at us. He was god-awful and if he hadn’t played for the Cubs he would have been fired eons ago. and his famous “oh no!!!!” during Brant Brown’s error at Milwaukee was the single biggest faux pas of them all. Santo even admitted as much.

Personally, I’d like to see them hire a second announcer to play off of Hughes. Similar to what Charlie Stiener did and what Georgie girl Waldman does now with Jon Sterling. (For those of you who don’t know, that’s the Yankees radio announcers.). The last thing I want is some “analyst” talking all over what I consider to be one of the more pleasant voices of summer I’ve ever encountered. Santo not being back in the radio booth is a blessing and also a giant opportunity to right a wrong.

As for Judd, I wouldn’t mind if he got the job but it’s the Cubs and we could do better. But let’s not make Judd out to be some lightweight. Judd’s been in radio a long long time. Ever since he was executive producer of the Heavy fuel crew show whe the Score first went on the air. Judd has been the voice of several teams, including the Wolves, and now pre- and post and occasional fill in for the Blackhawks. Oh and his Blackhawk calls are quite good. That he got promoted by his own bosses to do the 5th inning for the Cubs reflect the fact that he’s a hard working, intelligent, knowledgeable and hard working announcer. If you don’t like him- that’s fine by me. Like someone else more? by all means tell me what you think. Personally, I don’t think they should let Judd on the air until the FCC allows announcers to swear. Because Judd is an ace at cuss words. But those of who making all these superlatives about him being the worst announcers of all times and this NOOOO NOOOO NOOOO NNOOOOO high and mighty act, Gimme a break.

There's a big difference...

… between Ron Santo, who was there as a color commentator and everyone acknowledged he was no broadcasting expert and was a representative of “the fan in the booth”, and Judd Sirott, who was supposedly hired to do play-by-play.

Maybe Judd’s a good hockey announcer — I haven’t heard him. But his style is not suited to baseball. Period. His hiring wasn’t a promotion — it was done because Tribco was being cheap, nothing more.

The Cubs would do well by hiring Keith Moreland to be an analyst. But they could also do what you suggest and hire Cory Provus back from the Brewers, which would be OK with me too.

But seriously, Judd Sirott is not a good baseball announcer. Period.
