MLB Network To Honor Ron Santo
Many of you have probably seen Jeff Santo's tribute to his father, Ron Santo, "This Old Cub", or own it on DVD.
If you haven't seen it, or don't own the DVD, or just want to see it again, it will air on the MLB Network Sunday, Dec. 5 at 12 noon CST.

DVR setting time...
And that photo does bring back the memories. I think I went to 30 or 40 games that heartbreaking year.
Well, it was fun while it lasted, until September.
Thanks for the memories, Ron.
I went to a lot, too, but probably closer to 10
Was thinking this a.m…I wonder how much that innocuous (so I thought) heal click has contributed toward Ronnie’s HOF snub.

It probably has, and shouldn’t. Yes, that wasn’t done in those days, but it wasn’t done to show up anyone. It was done because Ron was happy about winning, nothing else. If that’s the reason people are not voting for him, shame on them.

Surely you jest, Al?
His BS antics are undoubtedly part of the reason why he remains on the outside.
Geez, how much can people apologize for jerkism?
It bothers me to have to comment like this, given the circumstances, but let’s call a spade a spade. Seriously.

Seriously...
… if you think that was “jerkism”, you don’t know what Ron Santo was all about.

I'll be honest,
although I never considered it “jerkism”, I did at one time think of it as showboating (which I don’t particularly care for). Especially back then when it wasn’t as acceptable as it is now. I missed his playing days so I only saw him do that on old clips. But then, once I got to know him better from the radio I revised that opinion to seeing it as him simply showing his joy. So I can see how people that don’t know him well (especially if they were from opposing teams) would think badly of him for it. I can also see some of the voters holding it against him…but that sure says something pathetic about the voters if they can’t see past a personal dislike to vote for him based on his credentials.
We're out of glue.
Granted...
… it wasn’t something players did back then and I can see how people might have seen it as showboating. But it certainly wasn’t “jerkism”, and I agree with you that 40 years later, if this is a reason people aren’t voting for him, that’s pretty pathetic.

Showboating?
That so-called “showboating” is so tame compared to what some athletes do these days.

Exactly.
But you have to remember, 40 years ago NO ONE did that kind of thing.

I may be mistaken,
but I thought I read somewhere that he was on the wrong side of a potential players strike and some of the veteran HOF voters remember that.

No...
… I think it was before that. 1972 was an actual strike. There were a couple of proposed walkouts before that, that did not occur. I believe, in fact, one of them was in 1969.
Santo was perceived as pro-management, that’s true. 40 years later, that’s yet another poor reason to not vote for him.

It's not up to me, but.........
……..those who have the votes believe his behavior was out of line.

I've set my DVR for MLB at noon tomorrow
but right now, Comcast says that’s supposed to be the 2001 Home Run Derby.
Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.
They have probably not received the schedule change.
I got an email from a MLB Network PR guy.

I have the DVD and haven't been able to bring myself to watch it since Ron passed...
Too soon…

This has been a tough year.
We lost Ernie Harwell, Sparky Anderson and now Ronnie. Three GIANTS of the game.

I had a hard time watching it before...its hard to be a Cubs fan :(

For anyone who hasn't seen this, I highly recommend viewing it
Even someone who isn’t a baseball fan can could find it worth watching.

almost...
I think the thing I admire most about Ron Santo is the passion and faith he had in himself and his team. He came really close to beating his diseases. He almost experienced his team winning in ‘69. Almost saw the Cubs in the WS and almost got into the HOF. Most of those things almost happened in his lifetime, and yet he remained positive about it all. For me, to have that undying and unmoving faith is truly the most spiritual and passionate a human being can be. I want to be like that.
I changed my mind—winning the WS isn’t the most important “Cubs” thing to me anymore. I love being a Cubs fan, no matter what….I love my imperfect team, my imperfect life….it is what it is.

I'd go further than that -- I'd say he DID beat diabetes
No doubt the complications took their toll, but he lived a hell of a lot longer than could have been expected – and a lot better, too. A lot of that has to do with his attitude.

I recall reading
One of the Mutts coaches (Pignatano?) confronted Ron about it. It ended with Ronnie giving him a big FU. Wish I had a reference for this.
Imagine that…someone from Chicago telling off a New Yawk POS. Another reason to love Ron forever, and, like Ron, dislike anything NY.
