I was on another website

responding to someone’s dumb assertion that the NL would end up 1. Cards 2. Brewers 3. Reds 4. Cubs 5. Astros 6. Pirates. In addition to stating how dumb it is to predict the outcome of the NL on 2/1/2010, I had brought up that the Brewers and Reds have done practically nothing to make them competitive in the Central, and that the Reds would be on the bottom half of division if we look at how things are right now. Minutes later this news breaks and I feel like I will be absolutely correct in my prediction.

Catch my act on Twitter as @dat_cubfan_dave.

by daver on Feb 2, 2010 11:52 AM CST up reply actions

Here's what she says.
For those of you wondering about Miles’ salary, of which the Cubs reportedly were paying $1 million, the transaction with the Cubs actually included $1 million for salaries. That didn’t mean that the Cubs were paying Miles himself $1 million, nor does it mean the A’s were considered to be on the hook for $1.7 of Miles’ salary rather than $2.7 million. Miles counted for $2.7 million against Oakland’s payroll, not $1.7 million, which is why the A’s can characterize today’s move as paying $1.3 million for Rosales, not $2.3 million. They are shedding Miles’ $2.7 million, and they do not lose that $1 million from the Cubs, so that works out pretty well, all in all, for the A’s.

If the Cubs were paying $1 million for “salaries”, why do the A’s get to keep it? Shouldn’t the Cubs get that money back?

This is addition by subtraction for the Reds. This deal isn’t about acquiring Aaron Miles, it’s about getting rid of Willy Taveras. This could have been a bag of balls in return and it would have been a huge win for the Reds. There won’t be 100 Miles groundouts to 2nd, because he won’t get enough ABs to do that, even in Dusty-land.

Cincinnati is a better ballclub than the Cubs right now

You can ridicule the Aaron Miles thing all you want, but all I know is that the Reds are on a serious upward trajectory and about to pass the Cubs as prime challenger to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Walt Jocketty saved over $1 million in this deal folks. THAT is why it was made.

half right

The Reds are on a “serious upward trajectory,” but I’m not worried about them passing the Cubs yet. Their pitchers are still young, their lineup can’t seem to stay healthy (I know, neither can ours) and they have a manager who truly hasn’t learned a thing in 15 years.

As many of us have said, the Cubs current nucleus (Aramis, Lee, Z, Lilly, Dempster, Soriano, etc.) should be given one more year to try to win it all. And with the current contract situations, it’s not like the Cubs have a lot of choices, anyway.

The Reds will be trouble in 2011. But if they’re better than the Cubs in 2010, I don’t see either squad playing much better than .500 ball.

by elgato on Feb 2, 2010 9:37 AM CST up reply actions

Here is the way I see it

The Reds window is opening while the Cubs window is closing. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Reds finish third behind a combination of St. Louis and Chicago, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Reds win the division, or at least give everybody a run for their money.

you just lost whatever sense of credibility that you have left..

First the Nationals..now the Reds?? So are the Cubs the worst team in the league?

Start Sean Marshall!!

Well he's not going in as an athlete, that's for sure

Question for all of you

… did Dusty lobby to sign Taveras and/or Patterson?

by elgato on Feb 2, 2010 11:01 AM CST reply actions

While I have no specific info...

… my guess would be “yes” to both.

Mine, too

Especially on Taveras. I’m arguing with a friend who’s a Reds fan.

Good luck with that.

Reds fans hate us. Maybe more than White Sox fans do. Really. Go look at the SBN Reds site if you don’t believe me.

WTF is wrong with you and the insistence that Dusty Baker ADVOCATES for the acquisition of bit players and garbage

Do you REALLY believe this crap that comes out of your vindicative keyboard?!?! Just a hunch Al, but I’m pretty damned sure that if Walt Jocketty presented Dusty Baker with the alternative of Willie Tavares versus going out and getting somebody actually good like a Matt Kemp, that Dusty would vigoriously raise his hand for the later.

Jim Hendry is the idiot who polluted the Cub roster with Neifi Perez on top of Freddy Bynum, Jose Macias, Jose Hernandez, Enrique Wilson, Rey Ordonez.

The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.

um ...

you’re actually gnashing your teeth about deals made seven years ago?

by elgato on Feb 3, 2010 12:09 AM CST up reply actions

and those were small contracts

nothing crazy, i mean come on Jose Hernandez? Does BLou remember who we traded him for?

7/23/2003 – Cubs trade Jose Hernandez, Matt Bruback and Bobby Hill to the Pirates for Aramis Ramirez and Kenny Lofton.

Ramirez and Lofton were key components of a Cubs team that was one game from the World Series. Lofton hit .327 with an .381 OBP and was a catalyst atop the order for the Cubs, while Ramirez smacked 15 homeruns in less than 1/2 a season. Lofton has since retired, but Ramirez continues to man the hot corner for the Cubs after being resigned in 2006.

None of the players the Cubs gave up amounted to much in the majors. Bobby Hill had a decent half season with the Pirates in 2004, hitting .266 with a .353 OBP, but has since washed out of the majors and has played the last two years in the Independent League.

Hernandez was 33 at the time of the trade and already on the downslope of his career. He hit only .223/.282/.326 for the Pirates in 2003 before bouncing around for a few years. He was last seen playing in the Mexican League in 2008.

Bruback never pitched a day in the majors.

Once again, Hendry did that at the request of Baker.

I’m not sure why you have trouble believing that.

And of course, the strawman of Kemp vs. Taveras? Come on. Of course no GM would turn that down. But that’s not the issue here, is it?

I would like to see a story or other proof connecting Taveras to Baker

I think I remember reading that a year ago, and it certainly makes sense considering what we know of Dusty.

BUT … I know that I could easily jump to conclusions about Dusty. No offense to anyone else here personally, but I doubt I’m the only one.

by elgato on Feb 3, 2010 10:11 AM CST up reply actions

Wayne Krivksy was the GM when the Reds signed Correy Patterson

After he was fired he said he was ordered by the organization to sign Corey Patterson no matter what it took, which is why he received a $3M contract.

by justin007000 on Feb 2, 2010 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

Which likely means Dusty was behind it.
