Twins, Joe Mauer Reach 10-Year Contract Extension Agreement
So much for everyone who said he'd be going to the Yankees. This is big news for the future of the Twins franchise.

Wow, 10 years.
I’d imagine Twins fans must be pretty happy right about now.
Catch my act on Twitter as @dat_cubfan_dave.
3:27pm: ESPN’s Buster Olney tweets that he heard from multiple sources that Rosen’s report of a preliminary 10-year agreement is not accurate.
Is there some behind-the-scenes labor agreement meaning behind this?
The Twins never seem to spend this kind of money.
Come visit me inside Wrigley along the Addison side mezzanine fence straight up from 1st base.
The Twins have increased payroll to the tune of $95 million for 2010 (sans this contract).
They will invest in the on-field personnel, per their GM at their convention, which took place this past weekend.
They'll probably get a big revenue boost this year from the new ballpark.

That link says
Two people close to the Mauer family said they’d heard the framework of a deal — number of years and guaranteed money — may already be in place, with the sides simply ironing out details such as deferred payments. Those claims have gone unconfirmed by people close to the negotiations.
Which could be true. We’ll see.

The right move for the Twins
Joe Mauer is a St. Paul native and the literal face of the Minnesota Twins. Players like Mauer are rare in this respect. The only current players who are as much identified with a ballclub is Derek Jeter and Albert Pujols. ’
Great for Mauer. Great for the Twins. Great for Twins’ fans.

Regardless of who it is
a 10 year deal is too much – especially for a 26 year old catcher with back problems. You of all people should be cynical of a 10 year signing BLou.
except that he won't be a catcher over the life of that contract
at some point, he’ll be one of the better DH’s in the game.

well, yes
in an age when most players move around constantly being able to have your own George Brett, or Tony Gwynn, or Kirby Puckett is probably worth the high price tag.

Pretty easy to do when Mauer produces like he does...
… and Soriano produces like he does.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
when the signing was done
Sorinao was producing and was the #1 FA that off season, which made the signing easier to justify as people are doing for the twins.

and three years older than Mauer - 31 vs 28
and those are three prime production years.
If the Cubs had signed Soriano three years earlier (his 2 Texas years and 1 Washington year), then it would have been a lot easier to justify.

Soriano might have been the #1 FA that offseason
But Mauer is one of the best and most valuable players in all of baseball. Odds are that his good years are going to continue to be far better than Sori’s, and odds are his bad years will be better than Sori’s as well.
I have little doubt that Mauer (and A-Rod, Pujols, etc) will be overpaid by the end of their contracts, but odds are very good that they will make up for that with high levels of production during the peak years.
And that doesn’t even take into account the marketing value a homegrown player like Mauer has to the Twins.
Not enough to cover a 23MM cost
Especially if something were to happen to him. The Cubs and Cards get ripped for 7 year deals and Mauer gets a pass on a 10 year deal … why??
Don’t get me wrong, I love Mauer, I think he deserves every penny he will get, I just don’t think the years need to be anywhere near this.
considering the 10 year deal isnt even real

Yep
Joe Mauer is an extraordinary ballplayer and the literal face of the Minnesota Twins. He is a hometown boy who made good. He is to the Twins what George Brett was to the KC Royals. Bottom line, Mauer needs to start and finish his career in Minnesota. This is a GOOD THING for baseball too to have the story come to this conclusion.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
that argument doesn't really hold water, because the Cubs don't have the option
of moving him to DH as he ages. Soriano’s contract wouldn’t look THAT bad, if we could put him at DH for the final two years

10 year deal is smart business for the Twins
Trend in baseball is to give “mega-stars” the extra long-term deal. In the case of a 10 year contract the ballclub can work with their financial gurus to structure annuity investment to accomodate the 10 year payout stream.
It’s not so much the length of the deal as it is the dollars. To get somebody like Joe Mauer on a 5 year deal would have costed a lot more money per year.
This is a brilliant deal for Mauer and the Twins. And very, very good for baseball that a small-market team like the Twins can keep a superstar like Mauer.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
same logic with signing Soriano to 8 years
right? Sign him to a few extra to get the deal done instead of lose the #1 FA of the off season

Remember
how relieved we all were when the Twins took Joe Who? with the first pick in the draft so we could get Mark Prior?
I wasn't.
Mauer had the third fastest throw from home to second in the world. Yeah, in the world, out of high school. He led his basketball team to a championship, was Gatorade Player of the Year and had a full QB ride to Florida State back when they were good, and was born and bred in Minnesota. Watching him play baseball and football in Minnesota high school state tournaments was a dream. Oh, and he struck out like 4 times in high school. Total.
"The riches of the game are in the thrills, not the money." --Ernie Banks
And the Cubs then had the choice of the two next-best players.
Mark Prior. And Mark Teixeira.

Was anyone complaining before...
… Prior started with, what turned out to be, career ending injuries? I imagine a few might have complained about the Cubs ending up with Prior, but if who foresaw the injuries with Prior?

Of course not. Cub fans were pleased to have a big war chest
and a chance at the identified #1 talent in the draft.
Turns out there were many who didn’t like Prior’s mechanics (see the SI article two years ago about Lynsecum where they cite specific scouting reports on Prior coming out of USC).
Most of us felt bad about Prior’s injuries and appreciated his performances when healthy.
I grew sick of him constantly being compared with Woody, but Prior always complaining about his bad luck and minor aches and pains, while Woody would come back and pitch through whatever he was dealing with. The last straw was Prior’s implying he was treated poorly by the Cubs.
Just so’s you know, I’m jealous of the Sox pitching staff and will not be so kind when you appear in-season to gloat.

It's too bad...
… that Prior’s career was stalled with injuries. His career was comet-like. They drafted a top talent and he had a great run, albeit too short. IT happens. I don’t blame the Cubs for that.

I too like the Sox starters. I’m not sure though of the BP nor the position players, not sure how The Guillen Plan will work out. However it turns out, Guillen should wear-it.

What do you mean "wear it"?
The Sox starting pitching should be very, very good this year. However, I wonder about their idea of playing “small-ball” when their home park is a launching pad.
The “Ozzie Ball” thing from 2005 was a myth. That team won with starting pitching and home runs.

I agree about the starting pitching and perhaps the Sox will be good largely as a result of that. But if Ozzie’s idea about small-ball in The Cell, in the AL, flops then Ozzie will need to wear it or bear responsibility for the results. This is a team of Ozzie’s wishes.

What's the real power structure over there, Doc?
If the Sox flop, I think Ozzie is the sort to “wear it” – he won’t shy away from accepting the blame. But will it be enough for KW to fire him? Would KW fire him? And would Jerry let KW fire him?
Obviously, KW has never shied away from making bold/risky decisions but I was always under the impression that Ozzie was a distinct favorite of Jerry’s. I guess it probably depends on how big a flop it is, if a flop even happens. I’ve given up trying to predict the AL Central…

My Reinsdorf essay.
What’s the real power structure over there, Doc?
Jerry Reinsdorf is the top dog, of course, after that …
If the Sox flop, I think Ozzie is the sort to "wear it" – he won’t shy away from accepting the blame. (1) But will it be enough for KW to fire him? (2) Would KW fire him? (3) And would Jerry let KW fire him?
Probably not to the first two. No, not if it were a losing season or failure of the team that Ozzie wanted. Regarding (3) Reinsdorf has allowed his GM’s to make moves he has disagreed with. One that Reinsdorf has repeatedly pointed to was when as The Hawk was GM, Reinsdorf reluctantly signed off on The Hawk’s firing of the Tony Larussa. Reinsdorf allowed that firing to take place in spite of his disagreeing with that move. I think if Reinsdorf could go back he would have blocked The Hawk from dumping Larussa.
So, would Reinsdorf allow KW to fire Guillen? I think it would take quite a bit for Reinsdorf to sign-off on that move, much more than a losing season. Remember too that KW only interviewed Guillen for the managerial job because of Reinsdorf.
Reinsdorf is not perfect. Early on he and Einhorn acted without understanding the situation in Chicago with cable TV, etc. and as a result alienated quite a few Sox fans. That said though, I respect and admire Jerry Reinsdorf. He’s loyal to his people. I know of that from a friend who played with the Sox. I know how Reinsdorf stepped in and quietly, discreetly helped him out. First by keeping him on the Sox roster so he’d get his pension & other benefits. Then by giving him a job when he really needed it. Jerry has even gone out of his way to attend this friend’s kids weddings. I know this loyalty and help is not unique to my friend either. That loyalty that Reinsdorf has shown earns him fierce loyalty for his employees in return too. Reinsdorf’s loyalty, is a great trait but that can also be a weakness too.
We’ll see what happens but I’d expect that Guillen will quit before he gets fired.
"People shouldn’t bust your chops just because you’re a Sox fan on a Cub board — but I know it happens. FWIW, I think sites like this are more interesting when fans of other teams join in the conversation." by Shanghai Badger on Mar 13, 2009
I could see that.
I envision a big pow wow. KW wants to fire Ozzie but is treading carefully, mindful of Reinsdorf’s affection for Ozzie. At the same time, Reinsdorf is subtly trying to play peacemaker, wanting to keep both parties happy. So it goes, back and forth – KW aggressing, Reinsdorf mollifying.
Finally, Ozzie says “Ah f&ck it. I don’t need this sh&t. I quit.” and walks out.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
Funny...
… and in many ways Uncle Lou is quite the same as Ozzie.

c – AJ
1st – Konerko
2nd – Ramirez
SS – Bacon, with Omar as backup
3b – Teahen/Viciedo
RF – Jones/Kotsay
CF – Rios/Pierre
LF – Quentin/Pierre
I don’t believe Jones has anything left, but there are options. Further, Detroit is juggling finances, Cleveland hasn’t upgraded, and MN is older without signficant improvement. With strong starting pitching and the bullpen average, things should tilt toward the Sox.
Cubs are still a mystery to me. The starting core is still the 2008 team less Edmonds/Johnson and some hairy Italian dude and 2009 less MB. Which year is closer to the real time will be proven this year.

I'd flip Becks and Ramirez as
Alexi seemed more comfortable at second. If just two of the combination of Jones, Quentin, Rios & Pierre can stay healthy/perform, the lineup looks pretty good. KW also has the luxury of trying to locate a 3b or corner OF if needed as Rios/Pierre & Jones can play CF and Teahen can play the OF corners.
Flexibility is cool.

Flexibility is what Guillen wanted...
… and it’s what he got.
This lineup is a departure from the softball teams the Sox have been fielding for years. The home-runs and power were fun, at times, with those teams but I know I got tired of their inability to score on singles from second, etc. Station-to-station baseball is what they played. There is a possibility of HR’s up and down the lineup, with the exception of Juan Pierre. Of course there is the possibility too that this team won’t score enough runs. Losing 3-2, 2-1 won’t be fun either.
There is at least one 3rd baseman on the market, Joe Crede, but I don’t see the Sox moving that direction. They will probably have to stick it out with Teahen at 3rd and Rios in CF for this year and at least a couple years afterward too.

Certainly the Cubs fortunes worked out for the worst in regards to that
but at the time, what the Cubs did was pretty clear cut. No one complained when the move was made. Had a big market team had the #1 overall pick, that team would have most likely chosen Prior.
I still remember that game that Prior had against Seattle in 2002. His 2003 season with the Cubs was arguably the best season that a Cub starting pitcher had in the past decade. When healthy, the guy was a beast and every indicator was that he was going to be one of the game’s elites for a long time to come. I would bet that after the 2003 season, Mark Prior’s trade value would have been in the top 10 in all of baseball. It was higher than Mauer’s and Teixeira’s.

He’s a special talent but scares the poop out of me on the open market. With rumors already out there his knees will need to move to first earlier than most catchers, he’s just the kind of guy the Cubs love.
The cynic in me sees the Cubs signing a multi year big ticket FA for 1st the same year they sign Mauer to a big deal to play C. Two years in, they both have to share time at first and the clubhouse implodes.
Mauer is special and the AL is a place for a Catcher who may need more than half his at bats at a different position.
