Crazy Idea: Move Castro to 2B

Hear me out

We all know Theriot is not exactly Derek Jeter, offensively or defensively (especially defensively....well...Theriot just isn't all that hot defensively). However one of the big issues going into spring training seems to be that IF (that's a big if) Castro is ready to break camp with the Cubs and head north, there really isn't a spot for him. You can't cut Theriot (although I know many on here would like to). A young player like Castro needs some solid playing time and consistent at bats if he's going to stick and continue to develop. Otherwise you might as well stash him in Iowa. Despite Theriot's shortcomings, he is still a capable starter in the MLB and I'm fine with him as our every day SS.

My solution is to move Castro to 2B. The biggest weakness I see on our current roster (assuming Soriano and Soto rebound a little) is second base. Moving him here solves several issues:

  • Eliminates issues on whether or not Baker is an every day second baseman. This also allows him to move into the DeRosa role. We all know he can back up a multitude of positions and would almost be an every day player given that he will probably be subbing at 3B a bunch as well as filling-in in the OF and possibly 1B if Tracy/Millar doesn't pan out and if Nady is injured/playing right field
  • Allows Fontenot to not be an every day guy and possibly forces him off the roster (he's a great guy, I'm sure he loves his mother, but if he's not starting every day and can only play one position, I would try to trade him or cut him)
  • If/When Hae Ju Lee is ready for the show (still 2-3 years away from what I'm reading), you can keep him at SS. From what I've read, he's a better SS than Castro is. I've read a few reports that suggest Castro would be moved to 2B when Lee is ready anyways. This would be moving the process along ahead of schedule
  • Are we sure Theriot can still play 2B? I know it was his first position but he's been a SS for a few years now. It might not be a bad idea to keep him at SS until Lee is ready, then try to trade him
I understand that learning a new position is not easy and probably can't be accomplished out of ST. But is it unreasonable to expect a call up in May or so if Castro is ready by then? I know you have a good thing going with Castro and you don't want to mess with it but moving him to 2B might help him to the big leagues faster and would help the Cubs in the short and long term
