Well, this is news. Supposedly, he'll be ready anyway. Also, Jeff Gray had a groin strain this week in fielding practice and will be behind as a result.

Paul Sullivan link, for those who don't want to click it, but I could not find this info anywhere else and wanted to get it posted.

Honestly, I think you should get over this Sullivan fetish.

A report is a report. The link was factual and straightforward.

Interesting

Did anybody see the note in Levine’s chat yesterday — about how the Theriot hearing will have a major bearing on whether the Cubs can sign Chan Ho Park, http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/30863?

Sorry, if this has already been posted.

I’d say getting Park signed is even more important — considering Gray’s injury and Guzman’s knee issues.

Yes. Because I think (and said often) that the anti-Miles sentiment was way over the top

He was a utility infielder making one of the lowest salaries on the team, and yet all I kept reading about in the comments was how excessive his salary was and how Lou was giving up any game that Miles played in. Over the top and overblown. Just like the Sullivan reaction.

by Orval Overall on Feb 18, 2010 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

I give you a lot of credit for backing Miles.

But I totally disagree. Miles was far from the lowest salaries on the team and he was one of the worst players…in all of the MLB.

Agree

He is goofy and simply not very good… but the job isn’t nearly as easy as some make it out to be.

by fsuapollo on Feb 17, 2010 7:39 PM CST up reply actions

Disagree.

And it’s funny you use the word “professional” – because that’s precisely my problem with Sullivan. He has behaved unprofessionally – mainly and specifically regarding his treatment of Milton Bradley. And, please, spare me the sad violin music for the terrible pressure he lives under to keep it fresh and interesting. That’s his job. Many other beat writers around MLB are able to do it – and they don’t need to stoop to the level of making constant, unfunny attacks on Cubs players. I’d also add that Sullivan has blocked many Cubs fans (including me) from his Twitter account, so turnabout is fair play as far as I’m concerned.

Not to start anything

but where do you work, Daver? Maybe Sullivan can show up and critique the way you do your job, even though he doesn’t really know anything about the inner workings of what you do.

That's the crappy thing about working in a field where you're in the public eye

You are open to public criticism. Sullivan is aware of the downfalls of the job, just as he is aware of the perks. My guess is that Dave does not publish public material to tens of thousands of people, so it’s apples and bananas.

Again, just to be clear...

…I’m not boycotting Sullivan because I disagree with his use of the serial comma. In fact, I’ll go as far as to say that Sullivan, Wittenmyer, Muskat and even Phil Rogers all do a perfectly fine job of reporting news from inside the Cubs organization. The problem arises when they take off their reporter caps and put on their analyst hats.

But, again, in Sullivan’s case, it goes even beyond that – he used his position as a professional journalist to launch repeated personal attacks against Milton Bradley (who may well have deserved it, but that’s not the issue). And now he refuses to discuss the matter to the point where he’s BLOCKING people from contacting him about it. Now that’s ridiculous. I realize losing me as a reader means next to nothing, but it’s how I’ve decided to roll until Paul at least addresses the subject in an open manner.

Hey, he's welcome any time.

I can guarantee that I behave in a professional manner at all times and don’t refer to people I work with as “idiots” on public forums – no matter how appropriate that term might be. (Of course, if he did follow me around the office, he’d probably notice that I spend a little too much of my workday on BCB and Twitter, not to mention VFTB, and probably get me fired. But I digress…)

I don’t need to know the inner workings of Sullivan’s job to believe that he mishandled the Milton Bradley situation from beginning to end – and beyond. But that’s not even the reason I’m boycotting him – it’s the fact that he’s now taken the added step of blocking Cubs fans from following his content on Twitter and essentially refusing to respond to the many, many people justifiably criticizing him.

agreed, he is a very good reporter.....

…does he have some quirks and a little bit of an ego? Sure……but overall, he is pretty solid.

All the angst isnt worth the time, if you dont like him, read Gordo or Miles…

Too bad...

… it may very well be a minor set back but another set back for a guy who’s unfortunately had seemingly so many. I remember first seeing Guzman pitch against the Sox in an otherwise meaningless ST game. Hawk and DJ were both praised Guzman. He has a boatload of talent and it seemed as though the Cubs had a guy who was going to be something.

It’s certainly not over for Guzman, but it’s just too bad for him and the Cubs (who’ve stuck with him thru all these set backs).

Pitching is so tough

There is nothing to indicate that these set-backs with Guzman are any fault of his. It’s surprising some guys have long careers, debilitating injuries are rife. I cheer for guys like Guzman who keep pushing, keep working. Best wishes to him.

i pitched in high school

and have the tendonitis in my shoulder to remind me about it each day. i agree about how it takes its toll and it is amazing to see a pitcher like Johnson pitching at 40 (for one example)

Interesting

Swap Prior in for Guzman and pretty much everything you wrote would still be applicable. Yet I doubt the reaction here would be the same.

Arrogance & Attitude

I don’t doubt that you are correct. I know that while I do not celebrate Prior’s injuries I’d probably root a lot less for Prior. I’d say it’s a difference in attitude and arrogance between the two pitchers. That said though, Guzman has not received anything close to the scrutiny that Prior received.

Guzman had elbow and shoulder problems that set him back.

In 2003/2004 they were calling him “the next Zambrano”. Now, all we need him to be is a solid setup man.

Since this is not an arm injury, I think he’ll be fine.

An already threadbare bullpen can't afford a less than healthy Angel Guzman

Herein again lies the dilemma for the 2010 Cubs. The pitching is not good enough nor deep enough.

I think the bullpen will be exciting.

They are going to be a young group with something to prove. Though it can be a catastrophe, at the same time it can be a pen that can bring stability for a long time.

bullpens are always a crap shoot

but the teams that win it all always seem have a good bullpen even though the parts don’t seem to add up and/or work as well the next/previous year(s)

Guzman hurt?

Kool aide just went spitting from my mouth. All the more reason the Cubs should sign Park or make a trade.

I still like the potential of the bullpen,,,one more 8th inning candidate though and I’ll be stoked.
