A's moving to San Jose?
I have to admit, while I know the A's relationship with Oakland is rocky (to say the least), I didn't know a decision regarding their future there was imminent.
Can anyone expand on the interworkings of this? Is this just a Oakland sports writer wearing tin hat?

Giants Want To Block Move
The Giants claim San Jose as part of their territory are determined to block the move.
"The big possums walk late." - Harry Caray
The Giants are being asses about this.
Their new ballpark is more than 50 miles from San Jose. Most of their fanbase is closer to San Francisco, even though they have a minor league team in SJ.
Moving the A’s to SJ makes sense in every way. It will help raise fan interest across the Bay Area, which will help the Giants in the long run.
They’re just being pigheaded.

What the Giants want is of little consequence
if the A’s want to move to SJ, the owners will vote to let them.
However, Al, you are off the mark on one thing. More baseball fans in the South Bay are Giants’ fans than A’s fans, by a significant margin I suspect. But that said, there are plenty of South Bay baseball fans who would love to see SJ get its own team and would support it. SJ has a million people, and would see having a MLB franchise as a badge of honor, so despite being more pro Giants historically (the Giants were out here first), there would plenty of support for the A’s.

How does...
increasing the fan base for the Giants “rival” help them in the long run? Unless you’re referring to some extra ticket sales for those fans who travel to see the A’s when they play in SF.
What did your mother tell you about calling the Giants asses?
But seriously, that’s a goon thing to say.
"A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality." John Lennon
I'm not so sure about that
I can’t find it now, but I seem to remember an article that claimed that about a third of Giant season ticket holders live in the San Jose area and a majority of their corporate sponsors are located in the South Bay. Maybe someone else can find the real figures to check my memory.
Now the Giants are being asses because they don’t want to compete for their business. On top of that, the Giants were only awarded Santa Clara County rights so that they could use the threat of moving to San Jose as leverage to get AT&T Park built. Now that they’ve gotten what they want, they want to keep using that club some more.
But I do think the Giants have real concerns. This isn’t like the Cubs telling the Brewers they can’t move to Springfield or Cedar Rapids. But no Giant fan I’ve ever known would ever be caught dead at an A’s game unless the Giants were playing. Of course, it might just be that they would never be caught dead in Oakland.

Correction
the Giants were given the South Bay territory by the A’s to keep the Giants from leaving SF and going out of state.

And since the Giants didn't leave...
… and they got their new stadium 10 years ago… time to give that back to the A’s, I’d say.

That and they got new ownership

And they will fail in all likelihood
Selig and Wolfe have a history (positive), plus staying in Oakland is not an option, so there is little doubt the owners would not vote to allow the A’s to move to San Jose.
The A’s want to move to SJ because there are more people (SJ is the largest city by a wide margin in NorCal), there is more money in the South Bay, the A’s owner (Wolfe also owns the San Jose Earthquakes soccer team and is building a new soccer only stadium in the city) wants to be there (he has said Oakland is not an option) and the city gov wants them (the same cannot be said of Oakland). The city pretty much has all the land lined up for the new ballpark, so all that is left is for MLB to give the A’s the green light to move south.

The Oakland As are doubtful to get any stadium deal done in California
Hence why I beliew Lew Wolff will soon start looking at other options. Like San Antonio, Charlotte or even Mexico City.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
Have you been paying any attention to what's going on in San Jose?
The city’s revised EIR report was released this week—revised only because they shrunk the ballpark capacity. Over half of the downtown future ballpark site is already owned by the city. If it weren’t Giants territorial thing—rights given to them so they could build a ballpark in SJ, they’d have started construction two years ago. This is gonna happen.
It's not going to happen because the San Francisco Giants are not going to let it happen
And there isn’t a damned thing the Oakland As or Bud Selig can do about it. The territorial claim the Giants have on San Jose is ironclad. A good comparison to this situation is the Washington Nationals in DC. Peter Angelos of the Baltimore Orioles was hugely against the Expos moving to DC. But there wasn’t a damned thing he could do to stop it once the wheels were in motion because the Orioles do not hold territorial claim to the nations’ capital.
If you are San Francisco then why in the hell would you EVER give up territorial claim to San Jose? Answer is you wouldn’t. If you are the Giants it is in your best economic interest to see the Athletics pushed out of northern California completely.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
It's not up to the Giants to "give them up"...
they can be taken away or modified by a simple vote of the owners. If San Jose weren’t in play, why would the MLB Blue Ribbon committee investigating the A’s stadium situation even meet with the pols in San Jose last year? Read the writing that’s already on the wall. Denying San Jose is a real possibility is even more naive than suggesting San Antonio or Charlotte are MLB-ready.
Just watch, when that MLB report is released in the next couple of weeks SJ will get the green light to work out a deal with the A’s. Bud will have the votes in his back pocket. The Giants will get some effyou money to play nice; though it’s hard to see “damages” when a team already in your market (and the Bay Area is just that—one big market) relocates from 17 driving miles away (close enough to see from the upper deck at AT&T Park!) in an adjacent county to a location 48 miles and 2 counties away.
You're trying to argue reason with him.
This is, generally, a thankless task.

You must be new
You never argue with Blue Lou or Mike no matter what name is going under these days. He played baseball at NIU after all.
The owners can award Santa Clara County to the A's by a simple vote
and they will if that is what it takes to keep the A’s in the Bay Area, and it does BTW.

Move to smaller markets, or another country.
In the world of Blue Mike, it makes sense.

There was lots of talk about the As moving when I lived there...
That was ‘06 and ’07. At that time people were talking about a stadium in Fremont (halfway between SJ and Oakland) and jokingly referring to the “Silicon Valley As of Fremont” (Fremont isn’t really in Silicon Valley by most definitions).
If they move to SJ, well, talk about a big change in fan demographic. People knock Sharks fans as “red wine drinkers”.
As a Sharks season ticket holder...
that’s complete BS. Never heard that in my 10 years here. It’s the 49ers fans that are known around here as the white wine sippers.
Hmmm
Correcting some misinformation:
1. The proposed Fremont stadium would have been much closer to SJ than Oakland, even though Fremont is in the same county (Alameda) as Oakland. Wolfe was seriously considering Fremont as the site to get around the Giants South Bay rights. One could almost throw a rock and hit Santa Clara County from where they were talking about building the stadium in Fremont. This site would put the A’s would be outside of Giants’ territory, yet much closer to the baseball fans and the corporate money of the South Bay. The stadium in Fremont fell through when the city bailed out of the project due to concerns about noise and traffic from residents. Also, Wolfe always wanted to build the stadium in San Jose, Fremont was at best a fall back option.
2. Since there is no real definition of Silicon Valley, that comment is pretty useless. Fremont does have more than its share of high-tech industry and is as much a part of Silicon Valley as most other cities.
3. “People knock Sharks fans as ‘red wine drinkers’.” Never heard of that one, so I assume it is something you just made up. Now if you are trying to say there is a world of difference between Oakland and San Jose, then I would say your command of the obvious is working.

Years ago, the A's were looking to move out of Oakland
They actually looked at the possibility of moving to New Orleans ten years after moving to Oakland. Meanwhile, Connie Mack continues to turn in his grave.
