This game...

… is the oldest existing complete regular season game telecast. It’s the NBC Game of the Week telecast with Curt Gowdy & Tony Kubek.

I have a VHS tape of this that I bought about 15 years ago from a company called Rare Sportsfilms, which is headquartered in Naperville. Check out that website, they have lots of cool old sports films. (No, they did not pay or ask for the plug.)

Yep, Sportsfilms has it on DVD

It’s pretty great – watching Fergie’s motion is amazing. He was so easy and relaxed; you can see how he managed to pitch so many innings so consistently.

But the coolest part is how free of marketing and glitz the whole broadcast was. It almost feels like watching a documentary or something – you just have the batting order, not the Bud Light batting order. And Wrigley was still virtually ad-free in those days.

The DVD is a great present for a Cub fan….I asked for it for Christmas a couple years back!

One other thing you'll notice if you watch this game...

… is how fast paced it is. Hitters don’t endlessly step out of the box. A pitch is thrown, the catcher returns the ball, and the next pitch is thrown.

lol Al. If hitters even THOUGHT about stepping out on guys like Jenkins and Gibson to try and change their rhythm...

the next pitch would be in their ear…and then, their next AB as well…

It wasn't just those guys, though.

Everyone pitched that way in that era.

Good a time as any to mention...

“King of the Hill”, a Canadian documentary on Fergie during the 72/73 seasons.

Love this video simply for the fact that those were the years I started following the baseball and the Cubs. Classic footage, Fergie mic’d while pitching, and some of my favorite Cubs before they broke up the club.

Oh, and it’s free to watch online and also available to purchase (though a bit pricey)

I'm really glad that I got to introduce my kids....

to Fergie at this year’s Twins Fest. Yes, Twinsfest. I live about 40 minutes away from the Metrodome, and for the last two years Fergie has had a booth at the event. I brought my family all dressed in our Cubs gear. We get there, and there is not one person in line in front of Fergie. I just can’t believe it.

I got to introduce my ten year old daughter and my two year old son to him, which was very cool. I got an autographed Wrigley seat back with all his stats on it. My wife got him to autograph a baseball card. Not bad for my son’s 1st baseball card.

He was very gracious and talked with everyone. Class guy. Awesome memories.

Side Note: He was not alone this year, he brought Vida Blue and Rollie Fingers with. Pretty impressive table.

Fergie travels a lot to various places...

… to sign things to raise money for his foundation. I assume he’ll be at spring training again. He has had guys like Lee Smith and George Foster with him at spring training.
