Evidently Puxy Phil saw his shadow today...

…at least according to his web site. Which, according to folklore, means six more weeks of winter. And of course, everyone predictably moans and groans. “Six more weeks of winter? That’s terrible. Man, that sucks…” Wah, wah, wah….

Well, I’ll briefly repeat my rant from another thread – six more weeks of this cold weather crap means winter would end on March 16. And so I say to you…

What the hell is wrong with that??? I’d love it if Spring weather started in the middle of March. At least we wouldn’t have to put up with this come April – bunting and snow do not go together…

Willie?

Is that the giant rat that Ozzie Guillen always talks about?

No

That rat was just a stowaway with Ozzie’s stuff that he brought over from the Cell.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

The official Groundhog Day prognostication from right here in the beautiful historic Woodstock Square in Woodstock, IL. On this February 2nd, 2010 at 7:07am Woodstock Willie, the seer of seers, prognosticator of prognosticators emerged reluctantly and somewhat feistily I might add and stated in Groundhogese….. I definitely DO NOT see a shadow.

EARLY SPRING!!!!!

I know Punxy Phil predicted six more weeks, but his forcast is only for PA. If you want a more accurate forcast for the Wrigley area listen to Willie.

Sorry Al, I know you HATE Groundhog Day, but the earlier spring comes, the earlier it’s time for baseball. So try to enjoy Groundhog Day anyway! :)

That PA thing is a complete ripoff.

First, the whole concept is ridiculous. Second, that PA rodent always sees his shadow. What’s the point of doing it anyway, except to get 10,000 people to stand out in the middle of nowhere in the cold?

That is not true.

Problem is I can’t get logged on to groundhog.org to prove it right now as it seems to be too busy today. I know I saw a list somewhere that had the results listed by year all the way from it’s beginnings in 1886 and some were “early spring.” He does not ALWAYS see his shadow.

Also, the crowds have been up to 40,000. In Punxsutawney I believe they start shuttling people to that forest preserve at 3am so I tend to agree with you about the “standing out in the middle of nowhere” part. Here in Woodstock the crowd has only reached the hundreds. I personally didn’t have to leave my house til 6:45am to be there in time to hear the polka band play “Take Me Out to the Treestump” and the “Pennsylvania Polka”.

OK-The last time Phil

predicted an early spring was 2007. That lists some of the other groundhogs and their predictions as well.

You know I'm not really like that.

I just think all the attention paid to this “holiday” is mindboggling.

A better national holiday would be Opening Day of the baseball season.

by Al Yellon on Feb 2, 2010 10:52 AM CST up reply actions

On that we can agree!

And BTW, I do celebrate Opening Day as if it’s a holiday. I never actually have been to Wrigley for the opener but I have my own little party at home. I hang ivy all around the house and get hot dogs, cracker jack, peanuts, Old Style, etc. It’s a blast.

It's really more of an observance than anything

And other than 5 minutes on the radio this morning, I really didn’t hear all that much devoted to it.

Seems like it.

Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

Go Pack!

Great marketing for a little town

that otherwise, has nothing going for it…drawing people to such a town in the middle of winter…..that’s genius, don’t you think??

Plenty of tourist dollars at the worst time of the year for no apparent reason.

Tip ’O the cap.

This is a loud WAKE UP call to those who have been hibernating since the end of last season.

I know I promised some people that I’d wake them at Groundhog Day so they’d have a couple weeks to catch up on the news before spring training. So whoever you are it’s time to:

Rise and Shine Campers and don’t forget your booties cuz it’s coooold out there.

All I can say is that AZ rodent is one OLD groundhog if he was around in 1908!

Either way, PA, IL or AZ, none of them impact the lake effect snow state of Michigan. We’re good for crummy weather until May…no matter what they all predict…

Now only 12,859 on the "Cubs Season Tickets Waiting List"...

Holiday

Count me in with the folks who think Opening Day should be a national holiday. I watch all the Baseball I can on the first day of the season, and I always watch the first Cubs telecast. of the season.

I mean, we have a really long winter up here in Fairbanks, and even the day pitchers and catchers report is, to me, a huge thing. But Opening Day should have national holiday status.

Agree

I usually try to use a vaction day on Opening Day, then plop myself in front of the tube and O.D. on all the games I can. The last few years I’ve gone out to Vegas to the big sports books and watched all the games from there.

A friend has gone ahead and placed bets for me on the Cubs to win the pennant and World Series.

So, 15-dollars is on the line….
