2010 BCB Community Projections: Sean Marshall
Sean Marshall could be a very important part of the 2010 Cubs. He's qualified to start, but Lou thinks he's better out of the bullpen. This isn't necessarily a bad idea, but I'd like to see Lou understand the concept of "long reliever", something Marshall could have done well last year instead of constantly being used as a LOOGY.
Post your projections after the jump. There are a number of different categories depending on how you think he's going to be used. (No category for "number of games played in left field", though.)

Lou is a genius
he is intentionally using Marshall as a LOOGY so that when it is his time for a contract they can pay him as such and then put him in the starting rotation where he will win 6 consecutive Cy Young awards.
I saw you in that coffee shop, breaking the fifth commandment. Congress passes these things for a reason, Lois.

What no form for guessing his stats in LF?

Sean Marshall might be just too awesome for a poor little internet form

Why Marshall isn’t given a shot? He’s not a typical “fall-in-love-with-him” scrappy guy like Fuld, Fox, etc. where some people fall in love with him for some odd reason (See Murton, Matt). This guy has posted ERA’s under 4 in two of three seasons where he was given a chance to start. Why wouldn’t a big lefty like him continue to be given chances as at least a 5th starter?

IMO, he definitely should be ahead of Samardzija in line for competing for a starting spot
I’d be happiest if one of Gorzelanny or Marshall earned the spot, giving us the second lefty starter while preventing our pen from being too left-handed (which isn’t a huge deal other than that lefties seem to confuse Lou). Or Silva, if he can earn it for a reason other than that he’s being paid so much.

fat chance that will happen
haha, get it?

It's fat like his contract!
And his pitching potential!
And his motivation to prove us all wrong!
. . . and his body. Wah wah.
I understand the long-reliever argument, and I was fully on board for the first half of last year...
…but towards the end of the year I started to think that Lou may not have mishandled Marshall as much as was suggested. Splits last year:
Vs. LH: .243/.320/.383/.703
Vs. RH: .289/.339/.462/.801
I thought Marshall really struggled against righties at the end of the year last year. I wouldn’t mind seeing him go more than an inning on more occasions, but I think him being used as a LOOGY when Grabow is being saved/is unavailable isn’t farfetched.
What are you trying to say?
Stop beating around the bush.
