Slightly OT: Where to watch the Cubs (online)
Well with one Cubbie fan turning 1 in May and another one due end of August, we are trying to save money where we can. One hard way was to get rid of cable and just watch broadcast TV on an antenna. With that being said I'm trying to find an in-expensive way to watch some Cubs games this year. I live in St. Louis and will be able to watch when the Cubs/Cards play, but other than that I don't know where to look. I thought about MLBTV, but lots of restrictions (blackout), etc and they don't even put in a post-season plan! So for all of you on BCB would you know of some website that will broadcast the games? I am able to connect my computer to the TV and will watch on there. I would just love to watch a little more games than the Cubs/Cards and not just "watch" on GameCast. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I got mad respect for that rule, Al.
Would you delete a comment encouraging people to email me so i could set up a list of folks interested in links to this sort of thing? I had a reasonable amount of success doing it last season, and wouldn’t mind sharing with other cable-less BCBers a little closer to opening day, should it be possible again.
If yes, my apologies to Al.
If not… you can find my email address in my SBN profile.

That's fine.

Fair enough. Thanks Al.
All, i have nothing as of now, but if you are interested in this sort of thing, hit me up and we’ll see what we can figure out come opening day.

Did you know that it is illegal to import links to the U.S.A. from Europe

btw - the above hole/course is located in Wisconsin, on the shores of Lake Michigan.
It’s not all cheese and brats up there – some pretty good golf courses as well.

Legally, I think MLBTV is the only way to go,
and since you live in St. Louis and the Cubs don’t play the Royals this year (this game would most likely be blacked out too), then I think it might be worth it. If I were you, if you have any friends that are Cubs fans that are also not living in Chicago, I’d look to split the cost of the MLBTV package with them. Last year, I was able to purchase the monthly package with someone else and we could watch the games simultaneously on different computers. That’s my suggestion.
Yes, I'd agree with that.
You’re out of the blackout area, so you’d get all the games (except Cardinals games, which you could watch on local TV).
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
FWIW, the majority of Cardinal games are on Fox Sports Midwest
and I don’t think that’s broadcasted over antenna.
On Sundays, the games are always on KSDK which is channel 5 (NBC) and of course the Sunday games are mostly on FOX.
Another thing. I do believe MLB.tv offers post season plans. They’re just separate and go on sale near the end of the season.
Life is tough, but it's tougher if you're stupid.

One question
You do say in your reply that you and your buddies could watch games simultaneosuly, is that correct? That would be a great option for some of my friends if we did get a subscription together and then watch whichever games we wanted to even if they were on at the same time on our own computers.
by NebraskaCubsFan on Feb 25, 2010 1:23 PM CST up reply actions
I'm not guarenteeing anything...
but I will say that yes, it did work for me last year. However, companies change their privacy policies all the time and this could change as well. I would think that too many simultaneous locations from the same user name would raise an eyebrow or two from MLB, but I don’t think that a couple of computers would hurt.
ALSO, when in doubt, get the GameDay Audio package. I think the WHOLE YEAR is like $14.99, or at least that’s what it was last year. Granted, you won’t be able to get the live video feed, but listening to Pat and Ron isn’t so bad. Just throwing that out there as well.
They should also be offering a monthly MLB TV subscription too pretty soon...
…last year it was $19.99/month.
Correction...
They have made the offer, and it is $19.95/month for the basic MLBTV and $24.95/month for the Premium package
I also found that to be correct.
Hey, it's a new century!

Hmm
In my experience last season, I could not watch games simultaneously on two different machines using the same username/password combo. Having stated that, I can also say that the machines in question were behind the same firewall and would have been presenting the same IP address to MLB.TV.
I did allow someone in another part of the country to use my credentials for the second half of the season, and never had any issues logging in and watching, so perhaps that was the issue. As a precaution, I demanded priority for Cubs games, so maybe your best bet is to find a local Cards fan with whom to split the costs. That way you can watch your Cubs games, (s)he can watch their Cards games and when they play each other, you can both watch on local TV.
"Who ever heard of the Cubs losing a game they had to have?" -Frank Chance
"If [Ruth] had [called his shot], I would have knocked him down with the next pitch." -Charlie Root
I suspect the identical IP address login was the issue.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
But...if you split it with a Cards fan,
(s)he wouldn’t be able to watch their Cards games because of the blackout, right?
No, the Cardinals fan could watch all games not played in St. Louis.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
I bet 11% of Americans had my username and password last year for MLBTV.
And I’ve used multiple computers on the same network. No problem either way.
Let’s just say the ability to split the cost of the package is a huge benefit.

If you live in the Chicago area, you can use a Slingbox...
to legally watch your cable signal from anywhere in the world that has internet access.

One of my happiest purchases made this year.
But these fine people have the issue of NOT living in the Chicago area.
does this work with Satalite or Cable only?

How else would you want it to work?
That’s not a snarky question — but what else would you use it with?
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
An air antenna?
Who knows. I have it hooked up to my satellite box and it works like a charm. The delay is of about 6 seconds. Pondering coughing up $30 for the iPhone app, which, according to everyone, is also beautiful.
The iPhone app is worth it.
And now you can stream over 3G. ATT finally allowed it and an update was released this month.
Cable was noted
but I was not sure about Satalite (DTV/Dish)
newest member of the Austin Variety Show www.austinvarietyshow.com/
It should work with any signal...
cable, satellite, antenna. As long as you can feed it to the SlingBox, you should be good to go.
I should also say there are other ways to do this. If you have a spare computer laying around, pop a video card into it, and then use Orb (freeware). That’ll let you turn your computer into a cable server and do the stuff a slingbox can do. You can even watch live TV on your iPod/iPhone this way. Pretty damn cool if you ask me.

you don’t have to live in Chicago. Just need a relative or friend who would allow you to hook up the device in their spare room.

Who knows what the MLB iPhone app will look like this year...
… but by the end of last season, you could catch all games on audio, and a good portion on live video. I assume they’ll bring something similar to other smart phones that support it.
In that case, wifi + a video output cord from your phone to your TV should do it.

It should be the same as last year
Free video to games if you have MLB.tv, a select few free games each day and $1/game ala carte.
My iPhone didn't export the video to my TV last year
The audio part ran fine on the iPod-A/V cable I have, but I got no love on the video portion. It would be very cool if they changed that this year, but I’m not holding my breath.

No way Apple allows video to be exported.
Too many problems with (1) the video card and (2) iTunes media.

This maybe a dumb question...
but i don’t care lol. How do the blackout restrictions work again? I was looking at mlbtv for this season (i have csn and wgn but work a lot of days) but i’m in a blackout area so i’m looking for explinations. I live in the middle of iowa so mlbtv actually said that minny, both chicago teams, stl, and kc are in blackout for me. Thanks for the help.
Greg Jennings.. Future All Pro
You won't be able to watch the teams that are blacked out in your area.
That’s basically what it means
so in other words..
mlbtv is a complete waste for me.. thanks for the heads up lol
Greg Jennings.. Future All Pro
Yep,
I have the pleasure of living in Southern Wisconsin, about 1 mile into the Cubs blackout area (where I attend school). My home, on the otherhand, is in Illinois. either way, I only get the Cubs/Brewers games with the lame BRewers announcers, the Rare WGN game, or TBS/ESPN games. Stupid Blackout Policy
by Rhymenoceros on Feb 26, 2010 11:22 AM CST up reply actions
I get the channels at home..
but with me working everyday i was hoping i could find a way to watch during work (great way to get work done but who cares) but I guess i’ll just record and figure it out later

MLB.TV Premium has, in the past, also included spring training games and the post season.
March to November live Baseball for c. $120 does strike me as all that expensive. It translates to less than $15/Month.
Here in Europe it is just about the only way I can watch the Cubs, and we don’t have blackouts here. The biggest problem is good dependable bandwidth from the servers at MLB-AM, across the Atlantic, to my computer at home.

How about MLB Game Day Audio?
I was going to recommend wgnradio.com. But they clearly state:
Major League Baseball prohibits radio stations, including WGN, from providing streaming audio simulcasts of our baseball programming from our websites. These webcasts are being made available, for a fee, by Major League Baseball through their Gameday Audio package. (Details are available on the www.mlb.com website.) We regret that we are unable to present this service to our Internet listeners.

Gameday Audio is part of the TV package
and afaik does not have black outs, but black outs aren’t an issue here anyways. Gameday Audio is fairly inexpensive by itself.
You would have to check MLB.com for details and pricing.

You can buy Gameday Audio by itself for, IIRC, $14.95 a season.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
You are correct about Gameday audio not being subject to blackouts
When the video is not available, MLB.TV will automatically give you the Gameday Audio for the game, instead.

"If [Ruth] had [called his shot], I would have knocked him down with the next pitch." -Charlie Root
Here's the way to go, from a guy that's uber-tech savvy and without cable tv:
Buy the MLB app for the iPhone.
Buy the MLBTV deal for the computer.
That’ll be like $120-150 or so. And it gets you:
1 – Audio streaming anywhere you carry your phone
2 – Every damn game live online, whereas you can hook your comp up to the tv, receiver, etc.
3 – Live look-ins of any game that’s popular or awesome from your phone
Done and done.
