2010 BCB Community Projections: Carlos Silva
Well, this one ought to be interesting.
Yes, I admit it. Carlos Silva was a really bad pitcher in 2008. In 2009, he pitched badly in only eight games (six starts) before he missed the rest of the season with injuries.
Supposedly, he's healthy. Yes, he's overweight. Maybe he can get in better shape in the next few weeks. If he can even come close to the performances he put up in 2004, 2005 or 2007, he could be a serviceable fifth starter.
Am I expecting that? No, I'm not. But neither is it impossible. Maybe you think it is; if so, post a projection like that. The form is after the jump.

I am not expecting anything from Silva
So if he does anything I’m ecstatic.
Really, Silva has more value in him not being Milton Bradley than he does in any role on the Cubs. That being said, he could be a real liability on the mound. I’m fine with him being in Iowa or on the DL all year

So was this guy.
It didn’t stop him from being an effective reliever for several years.

Is that Ray King?

He was lethal on the Cardinals
Turned into a LOOGY later in his career. I always wanted him to come to Chicago

King pitched for the Cubs in 1999.
…. then was traded to Milwaukee for a minor leaguer who never made it.

Ray King was gasoline to a match in 1999.
It amazed me the career he had after he left.
may addition by subtraction be real
Never knew that
I was too young to be paying that close of attention at the time. I was too focused on Sammy I guess

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say he doesn’t even make the club and either gets released or demoted to Iowa (assuming he accepts the assignment).
My guess is...
… they won’t just release him and eat the contract. Doubt that he accepts an assignment to Iowa, either.
Most likely scenarios:
- Spends long stretches on the DL, or
- Is the 12th man on the staff.
This is assuming that he really can’t pitch any more. Which we don’t know yet.

Actually the Cubs will release him but Silva eats the contract!

Yeah and I’m coming up to Chicago this summer, hope to meet you!
Start Sean Marshall!!
In the end...
He will probably be just another Antonio Alfonseca. Alfonseca was good with the Marlins, but sucked it up in Chicago. Silva was good at Minnesota, bad at Seattle, and it’s not in his favor in Chicago. I hope I’m wrong. If he can hurry up and drop about 10 lbs, he’ll still be overweight but maybe he’ll feel better.
Off Topic, but...
Al, when did you change your screen name to the full name? Just noticed it today for the first time, and it first assumed it was an imposter.
No, it's me.
There’s a reason for the change. It will be revealed soon.

You're getting married and changing your name?
That, or BCB is about to be linked to something that gets it a lot more press, and your last name needs to be public. My prediction.

Other SBN franchisees
or whatever you call the big dogs are using their real names. My guess is it makes the writing more respectable → commercial.

I'll post the explanation for that again here.
Before SBN 2.0 in March 2008, people at different sites could have the same posting name. (Like Jessica, who lost that name to a poster at Athletics Nation.)
Now that we have one username across all the SBN sites, anyone who had the name “Al” at another site could not claim that as a user name across SBN. As of now no one can claim that name — it’s reserved.

I've noticed it on some of the other SBnation sites
and they also won’t confirm what caused it. Hopefully (for them) it’s due to some deals (extension of the yahoo deal for example) that will bring more exposure, and possibly a little more coin for the site authors who have great content and bring in a lot of hits for their sites and obviously SBnation as a whole.
But I’m totally guessing at that.

I know
As a fan, I really appreciate the effort that you, and others like you, put in. And while I realize it’s a labor of love, I also can see that the coverage is frequently better than the mainstream. Some of the sites and editors/authors are still new and learning, but for the ones, such as this one, that consistently provide good content, I hope that it gets to the point where it’s financially sustaining.
Anyway, I’m willing to wait. But please, please, please, let any changes incorporate a way to edit your own comments :-)

About comment editing.
Here’s the reason you can’t (and probably never will be able to). Comments are supposed to be part of a conversation. If you change your comment, you could change the entire tone of a thread/conversation, which then might not make sense.
So that’s probably never going to happen. (Use the preview button!)

Who knows with Silva...
…This guy could do absolutely nothing and I’d be fine with it, or he could be a serviceable #5 pitcher like Jason Marquis, who was also coming off of a few terrible seasons in St.Louis before he came here (although nowhere near Silva’s 2008). That being said, I don’t think we’re going to see the Silva of 2004-07. But let’s give the big-guy a chance.
Take a look at...
… Marquis’ 2006 season, and Silva’s 2008 season. Apart from the W-L records (and these days, for starting pitchers those are less relevant than ever), Silva’s year wasn’t THAT much worse.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
Oh, this is a great point...
2008:
Silva FIP: 4.63
Marquis FIP: 4.61
So I like the way this is turning out… All Silva needs to do is beat expectations.
Proud recipient of a hot dog shot from the Iowa Cubs hot dog gun.
Marquis' abysmal 2006 season earned him a $20 contract
courtesy of Hendry. He was mediocre for the Cubs, then traded to Colorado, where he was a 2009 AllStar, before crumbling in the 2nd half. Wouldnt that be wonderful if Silva could rebound like that?
by holy mackeral on Feb 27, 2010 1:47 PM CST up reply actions
I know, I did actually...
I guess I shouldn’t have looked at W-L so much, both had an ERA over 6 in those seasons, Silva just had less wins. Marquis played for a better offensive team, Silva played for a terrible Seattle team. But I remember watching Marquis getting shelled by the White Sox that season for 13 runs in a game and thinking “this is the worst pitcher I’ve ever seen!” Then he comes here and does a halfway-decent job for two seasons. Silva could do something similar.
Agreed.
Again, am I EXPECTING this? No. But it is not impossible.
"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra
I'm not expecting this either,
just trying to be optimistic. It is possible. Personally, I’m hoping Gorzo can bounce back and/or Samardzija can finally show up.
He will go 1-6, as a starter, with an ERA of 7+
for the Pirates after he’s released by the Cubs.
may addition by subtraction be real
I predict...
…he starts of pretty well, but then the wheels fall off about June or so.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
I don't have a prediction
because I really will be somewhat surprised if he lasts longer than Luis Vizcaino did.
He'll last longer than Vizcaino.
Vizcaino lasted 12 games into the season. From what I understand, his release was for non-baseball reasons.

Vizcaino went to Cleveland after Cubs release
But they released him after 11 outings and a 5.40 ERA. With the Cubs, he had a 0.00 ERA in 3 2/3 innings, before the release, so Al is probably right, that Cubs management didnt like him.

I guess that's the sad way to look at it
He was the exit strategy for what is surely the worse move the Cubs made last year to “improve.” I’d like to see him be more than that, and if he is, it will be a surprise.
