Sporting your Cubs wear during the offseason

I live in the far southern suburbs, and in the past, I haven't really paid much attention to this, but this offseason in particular, I will say that the vast majority of people wearing a baseball shirt, hat or jacket have been for the White Sox. I'm not sure if its the disappointing year that we had (afterall, they had one too), but I have felt like such a "minority" this winter when wearing my Cubs hat or Majestic pullover. Did most Cub fans decide to just pack their gear away for the winter or is this how it always is on the southside (i.e. Lockport, Romeoville area), and I just haven't noticed? I never quite put much thought into the "northside" and "southside" split before, since I just kind of always assumed it was more like that back in the early 1900s. If I were to have spent more time further north this offeason, would Cub fans have been more obvious to spot? I'm just curious.

I think that northside/southside split still exists.

Sure, there are Cubs fans like you (and others here) who live south of Madison St. But I think you’d have seen a lot more Cubs gear on the north side or in the north suburbs.

Cubs gear

I live on the South side near Midway and I wear my Cubs gear all the time, and I see plenty of others wearing cubs gear. Obviously it is 50/50 but there are plenty of Cubs fans living in this area.

Weird story

Most people don’t bother me. Though in December, when my fiance and I were eating at a Subway in Frankfort, some weird old guy came up to me and commented about my Cubs hoody and hat and started talking about how “baseball fans sure do love their teams.” He then was asking me who my favorite player and such was. Kind of strange. He was weird. I then asked him if he was a Cubs fan, and he said, “oh, I don’t watch baseball. I could care less about either the Cubs or the Sox.”

Same here.

I usually get playfully harassed. The far ends of the spectrum are a) those who continuously harp on about futility until I walk away and b) those who sincerely say they hope we win it all one day.

The “worst” is at work where my desk is literally covered in Cubs gear. And if they think it’s bad now, just wait til Opening Day when I bring in the “Go Cubs Go!” towel I received for Christmas and plaster that baby over my computer.

Is it April?

Good to know.

I, unfortunately, see Cardinals hats here in Chicago more than I would like. This surprised me when I first moved here, but when you consider that the southern half of Illinois is mostly Cardinals country, and you figure that a lot of those people eventually relocate to Chicago for the job opportunities, I guess it’s not surprising.

I would wear my Cubs stuff more often...

…if not for the weather. Most of my gear is tshirts or jerseys and that just doesn’t fly in a Chicago winter. And I don’t really wear my Cubs hats very often because I prefer to wear a stocking hat.

I will say that a couple years ago I bought a Cubs bullpen coat on clearance from the wrigleyville sports website. It was $50 (including shipping), so I figured whynot. This coat is no joke. It goes down to my knees and makes me look like I’m 200 pounds over weight. So I don’t wear it very often because it’s a little ridiculous. The only time I wear it is when it’s really cold out (i.e. opening day 2009 haha).

Cubs logo presence

As the owner of a hip,hot dog joint in downtown Portland (all Vienna Beef) we witness a parade of customers wearing Cub logo gear all day long. The place is plastered will Cub memoribilia and we’ve been named “best place to watch a Cub game west of Wrigley” by a major newspaper. During the season Cub fans gather to watch Cub games ( we have the package) and even during the winter Cub fans gather here to vent about all things Cubs. In Aug over 1000 Fans showed up to drink Old Style and watch a game and participate in drawings to win tickets to an Iowa Cubs-Portland Beavers game. I see bsaeball apparel year round. It is close, but I would guess 55% Cubs and 45% Cards gear. There aren’t many White Sox fans around here. I wear Cubs stuff all year and I agree with bourbon above, there are no other sports.

I wear my Cubs apparel regularly, but it’s obviously more visible in the summer, as I have tshirts and hats. Actually, in the summer, I don’t usually go out without a hat, and that hat is usually a Cubbie one. :D

Doesn't surprise me

Seems like most really good pitchers who can throw heat come from the state of Texas. And they’re always one of the highest ranked teams in the country. I don’t follow college baseball closely enough, though I’m starting to get a better understanding of the minor leagues as a whole. I’m sure college will follow.

Going from prospects to prospects to be. So weird. When you think about how some college football/basketball players can have an immediate impact on their teams as opposed to baseball, it’s a little weird

Wear some Cubs stuff in the winter

though much more in the spring and fall with summer being tops obviously.

Lot’s of Sox fans at work and considering it’s NW suburbia, it does seem a little strange. Not as many of them live S. of Madison St. as I expected.

There’s 2 guys in particular who just freak out at the presence of anything Cubbie; the inferiority complex is through the roof. Don’t seem them that much but when I know I’m going to be in a meeting with them, I am SURE to wear lots of CUBS stuff.

We have common contacts on the customer and supplier side and whenever any of them are in town for business and we are all in the same place, the sports conversation begins and ends with CUBS. It’s great!

Ever since the tragedy that was 2008, one of my four brothers .. the youngest .. couldn’t take it anymore and gave up on the Cubs, completely. Since then, he refuses to come to the Cubs games we all used to go to in Cincinnatti as family reunions .. which is sad.

But that’s ok. I still wear Cub hats, T’s and jackets whenever I stop by. I remind him where he came from.

My SIL, bless her, is a diehard Sox fan as all of her fan. She’s been classy enough though to go along with the inevitable Cubs indoctrination we gave her three sons .. until 2008 .. and yet, still hasn’t engaged in a full scale turning of them to the Dark Side. And my nephews are pretty cool about it .. course, the oldest just turned 11 and the subject will come up some day soon enough.

That's probably because...

Sadly, I'm not around my beloved homeland to say for sure

But I will say this .. when I was in Chicago at Christmastime and, unfortunately, about three weeks later due to my mom’s near death, and when I was elevated above the moment to realize it, I did see more than my fair share of Cubs wear on apparently Cubs fans in the South burbs .. mainly Cub parkas and stocking hats. And I saw plenty of Cubs bumper stickers, Jeep tire covers and window art.

I catch the I-65/Rt 30 onramp southband to Indianapolis as my first leg back to Tennessee (and for years, I’d look to that sad looking mongrel logo on the now defunct Celebration Station pizza parlor facing the ramp as a perfect mirror for how I felt). I did it twice on both of these occasions and each time, I was wearing my 80’s bright electric blue Cubs jacket. And I was able to successfully drive past and honk at a Cubs fan driving past me – and we were able to share a wave.

The Cubs Nation is very much alive in the South Suburbs, thank you! The Sox only wish they have as awesome a fanbase as ours.

I envy you. Since vacationing in the Sevierville/Gatlinburg area this summer, I seriously want to move there, or at the very least, right outside of Knoxville. Not an option for me at this time. I would be proud to represent the Cubs in that area and also root for the Smokies baseball team!

thanks, but I'd rather go home in the worse way

I have been living in Cleveland, about an hour south of Knoxville, since 1986. That’s a lot of Cubs baseball and my own family’s life, I have missed since then. I’ll be heading up to see the Smokies a bit this year.

You’d want to live in Lenoir City, south of Knoxville, or the Loudon area. It’s growing but still very rustic and a quiet place to live not too far at all from Knoxville, the center of the Big Orange universe. If you wanted something more remote, Weir Valley, south of Pigeon Forge is absolutely splendid. Lower taxes and equally beautiful access to the Smokies – in fact, Cades Cove is a gateway to the Smoky Mountain NP here just outside Weir Valley. However, it’s out there. If it snows a typical Chicago snowstorm in this area, you’d better have food stocked, wood chopped and piled by your house, and four wheel drive .. and you’ll drive a good ways to get anywhere.

Everyone at work knows I am the biggest Cub fan around. I usually wear a Cubs shirt 3 days out of the week. Plus I have a couple of Cubs watches and a Cubs lanyard. Around the house it is always Cubs gear. To not wear Cubs gear would be sacrilegious.

Tampa

Im rocking out my Cubs tshirts and hats all the time. It is a good conversation starter. It helps that I owned a condo less than a mile from Wrigley (more conversation pieces). I love the warmth of FL, but I do miss Chicago and Cubs games during the summer.
The Trop (Rays Stadium) is the biggest dump ever. The team is gonna be really good, but its hard to watch games in there. It makes you love Wrigley even more!

I wear my hat all the time

I wear my Cub hat regularly. Only got one negative comment…some woman said ‘Cubs suck’ or some such.

I pride myself on not telling the woman she should push away from the buffet table once in a while.

Planned for the cold

of central Illinois and have three Cub sweatshirts I wear entirely too much, along with a long sleeved t-shirt as well. I wear Cubbie t-shirts all the time too, according to the Mrs. too often actually. Don’t care what time of year it is, I always proudly wear my Cubs stuff. It’s a problem, and I fully admit it.

The rest of the time...

it’s either Bears, Blackhawks, or Dave Matthews Band attire. I need more big boy clothing apparently!

I wear my Cub stuff year around (except, yr. before last when we got swept by Manny steroid), I often get comments about them, the most is my Ernie Banks throwback jersey.

I had some sent to me here

My Wife who hates sports, but puts up with my love for the Cubbies. Sent me a bunch of Cubbies gear while I was in Iraq and I brought it with me to Afghanistan. Never quit wearing the gear, when I am home I wear my Cubs hat everywhere. I have had the same one since I got home from the first part of these Wars in 2003. Maybe its time for a new hat?

new hat???

definitly not….I wouldnt change a thing….maybe when you finally get home. I think it would be very comforting to wear Cubs gear so far from home. Stay safe! Go Cubs

Thank you and best wishes out there!

If you go for a new hat, I’d personally stay away from the new BP one. It’s ugly. Maybe you should get a camouflage one to stay safer?

Thank you

For all the well wishes. I think that I might have to change my picture, but on my Cubs gear with my Cammies, anything to change the luck of last year.

Was in Vegas..

..two years ago in August and was walking through Ceasar’s with my Cubs gear on and was inundated with “Go Cubs” from about 10 different blackjack/craps tables as I walked by. Kind of cool.

I wear Cubs gear year round....

but in the fall and winter, I also wear my Bears gear a lot. After football season, though, it’s all Cubs gear. I see a lot of both Cubs and Sox hats in the city, and during the season, which one you see more of depends on which team is playing at home. The out-of-towners who are here for baseball always wear their gear, and of course, that includes the opposing fans too.

During the season, I would say you see far more Cubs gear. In the offseason, I would say maybe slightly more Sox gear. Of course, the sarcastic in me would probably say that since Cubs fans have jobs, they probably are wearing professional attire during the day, as opposed to Sox fans. But hey, since I’m not a sarcastic I would never actually say that. Oh wait, I guess I just did.

I'm wearing my Toews jersey right now

My Kerry Wood jersey sits comfortably in my closet, patiently, til Thursday.

I do have a Cubs hoodie that I got at the convention that I wear a bunch.

If the Hawks and somewhat the Bulls weren’t doing so well, I think you’d see more baseball stuff

I got great comments in Jamaica

Wore my Cubs hat at Sandals Whitehouse a few weeks ago. Got a lot of conversations started. I’m always proud to wear my Cubs gear.
