2010 BCB Community Projections: Xavier Nady
Xavier Nady wasn't with the Yankees very long -- the photo here was taken during spring training 2009. He got hurt and played only seven games in a New York uniform during the regular season last year and had his second Tommy John surgery.
He may not be 100% at the beginning of the season, though supposedly the recovery from the surgery affects only his throwing, not his hitting. If he has to start the year on the DL, Chad Tracy or Kevin Millar may take his place on the roster temporarily.
He is only one year removed from a 25 HR, 97 RBI, .305/.357/.510 season combined between the Pirates and Yankees in 2008, by far the best year of his career. Nady is 31 and at the very least, should be a good platoon partner for Kosuke Fukudome in right field, and perhaps back up Alfonso Soriano in left.
How will he do this year? Post your projection in the form after the jump.

No matter what, he'll be the "X" factor for the Cubs...
…perhaps I should say ONE OF the “X” factors for the Cubs…
"Look, what do you want me to do?"
I have a feeling that Nady will be
Hendry’s most important acquisition this offseason.
I’m not expecting numbers like his career year in 2008, but the flexibility and lineup presence he brings will at the very least be a large improvement over last year’s outfield situation.

I have to agree with Goodie
Nady IMO could contribute highly to the Cubs . I liked this signing . As said before , Nady can be an awesome platoon player with Fuku . Coming off the bench Nady should be exciting to watch afterall Nady is capable of hitting 25 homeruns .
I'm thinking that Nady
has the capability to be the most productive bench player or best experienced bench player the Cub’s have had within the past decade.
Fukudome...
I can’t believe that Hendry paid $40 million (!!) for a “platoon” player. Let Kosuke be an everyday player again. He can learn to hit lefties. Thoughts?

$$$ shouldn't be the deciding factor here.
If you were Lou Piniella, would you believe that you should trot out a player everyday just because he is paid that much? Regardless of his performance?

Agreed.
If Fukudome’s performance can overall be better if he platoons, why wouldn’t you?

Hey, does anybody remember when the results will be posted?

Right
I think the ones that are over a week old should be posted. I am anxious to see how objective our fan base can be about our starters!
I'm going to post all the results in one post after everything is finished....
… which it will be on Wednesday. So figure a few days after that.

Hey...
We trot out Soriano everyday in spite of his crappy fielding and streaky hitting. But then again, he is getting paid $18 million a year. Why not make him a platoon player?

That's a good point also..
I’m guessing everyone considers Soriano a franchise player, and not Fukudome. Nady will still split time with Soriano at left, but more times with Fukudome. Its going to depend on the pitcher, lefty or righty, and players health.

Apples and oranges
Soriano when healthy and right hits anyone and everyone, Fukudome never hits lefties.

Rather have Nady
Platooning with Fuku and batting against lefties . Kosuke just can’t hit lefties and also Nady has some power .
Someone did some bad scouting on Fukudome...
..giving him a huge contract and THEN finding out he can’t hit lefties.
I still ask: why not platoon Soriano??
"Hey-Hey! Home Run! Attaboy Ronnie!" ~ Jack Brickhouse
The Cubs do not have the luxury
of hoping Fukudome will learn to hit lefties. His contract cannot be changed, so the smart thing is to use him as effectively as possible, and that means sitting him down when the other team starts a lefty.

Well if I had an iPhone, I would buy that in a heartbeat.

how do we know Millar will even make the roster?
Will Nady’s deficits give him the nod?

Might start on the DL
I think the Cubs want to mix and match a little more. It always is wise to keep a guy facing a rehab from surgery out of the really cold games at the beginning of the year. I think they want to see if Millar has anything in the tank.
As far as Fukudome, I am hoping for continued improvement. I think he improved last year, over the year before. He faced a lot coming to the US. And, some of you seem to forget that there were plenty of other teams bidding for Fukudome, as opposed to some of the players Hendry bid against himself for.
I predict...
…Nady will be a “key” offensive player for the Cubs this year.

What's great about 2010 season
If everyone plays to their potential this year, they have a lineup that I believe can similarly match their 2008 season. However, this lineup can just easily be at 2009 levels…
