Slightly OT: Trivia

It's 10:30 and I've read through most of the stuff on here, and I'm bored at work (where have I heard that one before?). It's still two weeks before pitchers and catchers report, Sam Fuld isn't dead and Maddux hasn't done anything significant yet so we don't have Doggie Stalker on here to liven things up. So I'm taking things into my own hands.

One of the reasons I love baseball, and sports for that matter, is the trivia. The little oddities, the random names, the numbers that last throughout the ages. I'm always looking for new information and cool stats to collect. So I'm asking you all to contribute.

This can be baseball related, sports related, or just interesting in general.

A few of my own:

Who scored the first run in KC Royals history?

Who did the Bulls trade to get Scottie Pippen and who originally drafted him?

In what round was Mike Piazza drafted?

What's my middle name?

Who's buried in Lenin's tomb?

What keeps the dyslexic atheist up at night?

I guess the internet can be used. I mean how am I going to police you, right? But I think it's more fun to try and stump the audience. The Piazza question can probably be found online. Not sure about the rest.

I look forward to your answers and questions!

First question.

I figured this was the answer, but I looked it up to confirm it. Lou Piniella scored the first run in Royals history, on April 8, 1969.

Lou was the leadoff man for KC — so he was also the first BATTER in Royals history. Led off the first inning with a double, scored on a single. Lou had four hits that day and the Royals won the game 4-3 in 12 innings.

Lou was the AL Rookie of the Year in 1969.

I didn't know he was the leadoff hitter

I did know he was ROY

That is correct though :)

Lou was buried in the minors for several years...

… and was taken in the expansion draft — by the Seattle Pilots. Just before Opening Day they traded him to the Royals, a really bad trade.

Had that not happened, Lou might have spent his career as a Milwaukee Brewer.

Who was he traded for?

All the expansions teams won their first game by one run on 4/8/1969

All four expansion teams, the Montreal Expos, the San Diego Padres, the Seattle Pilots (now the Milwaukee Brewers), and the Kansas City Royals won their franchise’s first game by one run on 4/8/1969. But the most memorable game of that day, also a one run victory, concluded with Willie Smith’s 11th inning walk-off home run.

Pippen...

Was originally drafted (5th pick) by the Seattle Supersonics. His rights were traded to the Bulls for the rights to Olden Polynice (8th pick) in the 1987 NBA draft. The Bulls also picked Horace Grant with the 10th pick in that draft. Not too shabby.

by cubfanandy on Feb 3, 2010 10:39 AM CST reply actions

Yeah, a heck of a day

Love draft day stuff like that. Polynice was a poor man’s Vlade Divac. Long career, really a back up center for most of it though.

Luol Deng is another one of those stories. Can’t remember who he was traded for, another random pick who didn’t turn out to be anybody and I think he’s out of the league though. He was acquired from the Suns though

Deng was acquired for $3 million and two picks.

One turned out to be Jackson Vroman, the player you referenced. The other turned out to be Nate Robinson- but the Suns traded that pick to the Knicks.

Enzo Hernandez.

He had 12. And I knew the name without looking it up (had to look up the number), because I remember Jack Brickhouse making a big deal about this when it happened.

Hernandez was an awful hitter (.545 OPS) on an awful team. He had a .250 SLG — yes, that’s TWO FIFTY. Lower than his OBA (.295). He had 12 XBH (9 doubles, 3 triples) out of 122 hits.

Hernandez wasn’t even a very good fielder, but he played 143 games for the awful 1971 Padres, who lost 100 games. They scored 486 runs, which was the fewest in the NL — by 70.

I love this stuff.

Field of Dreams is based on a W.P. Kinsella novel called "Shoeless Joe".

Which was very good. Highly recommended even if you have seen the movie.

The author was fictional: Terrence Mann. (Loosely based on J.D. Salinger, at least in terms of the guy being a recluse.)

The movie was a total sell out to the book. Kind of like putting a happy ending on a Tolstoy novel ( which Hollywood did once and it was stupid). I hate it when a movie adaptation essentially turns the book upside down.

I have to agree with you

about hating when a movie changes the story of the book. I am usually quite a purist when it comes to things like that. I was sickened when Disney did their animated “Hunchback of Notre Dame.”

In this case I saw the movie first so I was surprised and disappointed when I read the book. I don’t mean it as a knock to the book. Had it been the other way around and I read it first I very well may have found the film sappy.

I saw a nine-run inning in person in July 2008, but I remember a 10-run inning about four years earlier against the Cardinals.

The most runs the Cubs have scored in an inning?

I don't know the largest inning ever.

But here’s a 10-run first inning, vs. the Astros on May 31, 1973. Kicker — the first two hitters were easy outs. Then 13 straight men reached base and 10 runs scored.

I believe the Cubs have had an 11-run inning in recent years, but I can’t find it right now.

Well, the Cubs have the all-time single-game scoring record with 36 runs.

So there is a chance that they might have had a bigger inning, but I think box scores weren’t recorded back then.

That inning occurred well before any of us were born.

When it comes to baseball trivia, I am always intrigued by the "most" of the bad things...

..probably because as a kid, I saw a major league record set in person when Willie Stargell struck out to take over the career lead in that category. Then I saw him break that record his next time up… ;-)

Anyway, everyone knows Bonds has hit the most home runs, but who has the most strikeouts?

And on the pitching side, Cy Young has the most wins, but who has the most losses?

She has also served as stadium organist for numerous other teams, including the Bulls (1976-1984), Sting pro soccer team (1975-1988), and DePaul University Blue Demons basketball (1977-1981). Many other teams have sent their own organists to take notes from her and have occasionally brought her to perform at their own games. Managing 4 Different Division Winners

Who is the only manager to skipper 4 different franchises that have won division titles? It’s not LaRussa, Torre, or Piniella. I don’t count Dick Williams’ 1967 AL pennant as a division title because that was before divisional play began. Jim Fanning was the manager of the Expos, when they beat the Phillies in the 1981 NL East Division Series (yes, there was a division series in 1981 because of the strike that caused a split season). I’m not giving Dick Williams credit for that division title. Williams began the 1981 season in Montreal. The answer’s not Dick Williams.

Willie McCovey.

Schulz lived in northern California and was a Giants fan. It was in reference to McCovey’s line drive, which could have won a 1-0 game for the Giants (and would have also won the World Series) being speared by Bobby Richardson to end the 7th game.

The two variations were: Linus and Charlie Brown sitting silently for three panels, then Charlie Brown shouting, “Why couldn’t McCovey have hit the ball three feet higher?” In the second, he says, “Why couldn’t McCovey have hit the ball even TWO feet higher?”

That was one of the most remarkable endings...

… to a WS game, and WS, ever. Think about it. The score is 1-0 in the last of the ninth of the 7th game. The home team has the tying run on third and winning run on second with two out. If the batted ball — as the Peanuts strip said — went even three feet higher than it did, the Giants would have won the game and the series.

Hardly anyone talks about the 1962 World Series as being one of the all-time best, but that game sure was.

I think too many people, when they think about a dramatic ending to a World Series game, think immediately of Kirk Gibson in 1981. Not to take anything away from him, but you need to talk about 1962 and McCovey in the same breath.

McCovey later said his line drive was the hardest ball he ever struck.

… and that was an excellent trade for the Cubs. In one famous game, McDaniel came into a tie game in the top of the 10th inning with the bases loaded and one out. He picked Willie Mays off second base, struck out Ed Bailey to end the inning, and then hit a walkoff homer to lead off the last of the 10th.

It’s a little bit of a trick question because Fergie’s career began before 1969. Fergie Jenkins had 230 victories from 1969-1983 during divisional play. He had 54 victories before 1969.

Among pitchers whose careers started after 1969, Darwin has the most of any pitcher to never appear in postseason play with 171. He didn’t pitch for the Astros in the 1986 NLCS, not even in the 16-inning sixth game.
